Game Time Atmosphere

Thanks for your comments. First and foremost the games are for the student-athletes. After all that's why we have games in the first place. So yes, we see our job in the marketing department as not only to attract fans to our games but also help with recruiting. We realize the importance of filling the stands and have tried many things in and outside the box to attract fans.

We have also tried to contact every high school band in the city. However, we have not had any luck. We would much prefer to have a full time marching band but we don't and continue to examine new and different ways to make Viking football fun and exciting.

I don't know how many timbers games you have been too but they actually play canned music over the Timbers Army during pregame. Of course no music is played during the game as its 90 min of non-stop action. A soccer atmosphere and a football atmospher are not comparable. Most of their atmosphere is fan generated. We aren't there yet.

Overall I am glad to report ticket sales up as well. Most importantly I want you to know that I don't disagree with your points about canned music vs a band. However, I do want to assure you we have tried very hard to have a band at every game. At the same time I am not going to sit on my hands and just hope a band shows up. The start of the PSU pep band is a start to that. Have a great day! Go Viks

Thanks for sharing your and the marketing department's continuing efforts, Kenny. Glad to know you're checking out this forum - your feedback is valuable. I think I can speak for most Vikings football fans in this forum by stating that I look forward to the day when PSU's marching band takes the field.

That's great news.

Curious, was there anything done differently this year with regards to advertising or sales, or do you think that the increased local recruiting and better performance on the field has resulted in higher organic growth of season ticket sales?

It'll be interesting to see what sort of home crowds we'll see this year. The game on the the 22nd should probably be a good indication since an NAIA team, plus Labor Day weekend, plus UO and OSU at home makes for a tough draw.

This is our peer group to which we can most naturally develop into:

Utah State Marching Band: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MaYzm2kzn6k" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

That's the great thing about creating a Marching Band from scratch: the uniqueness and identity you can create from all the constituent features, an eclectic mix for the Portland State of Mind. Include a mix of the best from all Portland neighborhoods and even suburbs* and unleash an unending musical dynamism.

[*Dark Horse Comics came from the Portland suburb of Milwaukie]

I think the Portland Rose Festival needs to become the Portland Metropolitan Rose Festival to include Portland Suburbans as well. Have a huge court. The city of Portland represents way less than even 50 percent of the population living in the Metro Area. Silly to limit the court to just the Portland city schools.

Here's the thing... there is some piped in music at Timbers games.

For the most part, if the Army is doing it right, you never hear it.

The trick: it's not the front office that organizes the fans. THE FANS ORGANIZE THE FANS.

I would think this board is a good place to start.

Very well stated, I totally agree.

We need a STREAKER ! That'll wake people up !

Wonder if this guy would have another go at it.

Jeld Wen seems a little harder to escape from than the old PGE Park configuration.

Maybe the streaker should have tried the Rodney McRay method.
