Gameday Thread Sac St 52 @ Eastern 28

I don't like complaining about officiating but at least be consistent. There were two plays on that drive that could have been called PI. The first one for sure.

The first one was for sure. The second one could have gone either way.

Brutal. At this point it’s hard to see much going right im this season. I’d start getting our Qb #2 some significant playing time. I think you have to.

This team probably only has a couple more wins in it. It is what it is. A lot of it is the ridiculous schedule these guys have had to play. Hopefully in a year or two these guys will be able to look back on this season as a building block.

Nobody had high expectations for this team but even I didn't imagine a 1-5 start. The offense was inevitably going to take a step back but the defense is just bewildering.

I think Best needs to address some serious issues. I no longer think we're bad on defense and special teams. "Bad" doesn't describe what we're seeing. It's a lack of competence. It's like the guys on the field have no idea what the other guys on the field are doing. It shows up in blown coverages, missing people in spots where they're supposed to be, and whiffed tackles. On special teams, it's just a function of being totally unable to execute. Things haven't gotten better through 6 games; they've progressively gotten worse.

I don't like talking about guys not being able to do the jobs their assigned to do, but I don't have a lot of confidence that the staff can improve what's been broken so badly. I think Best needs an honest conversation to say if defense and special teams don't show marked improvement over the last 5 games, the program needs to go a different direction. When you've lost 5 in a row and haven't been competitive in 4 of the 5 games, and sit dead last in FCS defense, I don't know how you proceed without significant changes.

That's quite a dance. Best needs to be addressed. This is his and his alone. It's been coming for awhile if not just the past couple of years, all the signs/dysfunction pointed to this outcome.

Every time people have wondered at the decision making, the coaching turnstile, distinct lack of focus, odd personnel groupings and not addressing obvious issues.... that's Best.

It's not malicious but it is the product of his personality and he has a losers limp he won't, hasn't or is incapable of addressing.

It's OK to disagree. The hardest part as a fan is to not make team outcomes personal. Poor leadership is inexcusable, guess that's the most personal part to me.

On another note, did Sac look like a Top 5 team? :?

They have Griz, Vandals and Wildcats coming up. One on the road. I believe they drop 2 of 3 of these. Idaho looks tougher, Montana is faster and Weber is well coached.

I don’t disagree. But we’ve seen Best perform well before. It’s not like he suddenly forgot how to coach. I think he’s put some guys in places where they are unable to get us results. Since 2018, we haven’t played a lick of defense, yet when Ena left, we kept the same broken system instead of taking the opportunity to go a different route. I feel like we’re continuing to invest in a business that can’t and won’t ever be profitable. It’s just throwing away money and time at this point. That’s on Best, but the outcome that’s required is a major change to get better.

How many more seasons go by without improving defense and special teams? Those two things destroyed our season last year, and we’ve actually gotten worse in both areas when it didn’t even seem possible to be worst. You can’t be worse than dead last.

I thought Sac St was better than Montana State. Probably not better than Weber. Not sure how Montana and Idaho are, but I assume pretty good (we beat Idaho by what, a thousand last year?)

I loved their RB that just kept lighting us up. It felt like he was an every play kind of grinder. When was the last time we had a guy that could handle that kind of workload? It feels like we’ve devolved into a team where players can only go 4-5 plays at a time. And then we see this guy just coming, and coming, and coming.

Troy Taylor best coachin the league with the best team in the league. Looking at their roster he worked extremely hard recruiting players. Don't mean getting EKG type players, those day are thinning. They are experience JC players and FBS transfers. It's hard to find those players and find them according to position. We either don't do it enough or do it well enough. I wonder if we even use all our scholarship monies or how they split it up but all these are Best's players. Not sure how recruiting works. Lose 5-6 coaches all the time and what happens to those players who are getting recruited one year and position coach or coach who is in charge of a certain area are gone. Where do those players end up. Do we spend to much time doing that or spend time getting good JC players and/or FBS transfers. We got out manned yesterday...a tale of two levels. The facilities are shot...at MSU game bathrooms spewing out brown water/toliets down below brown water...gross and lines for grub too long. Best takes pay cut, prolly dont pay assistants enough to get top assistants, throw in Hinkey leaving(whos working two full jobs) and prolly won't replace her. Hey Shari McMahan, PhD what are doing to help image of EWU?
