I think Best needs to address some serious issues. I no longer think we're bad on defense and special teams. "Bad" doesn't describe what we're seeing. It's a lack of competence. It's like the guys on the field have no idea what the other guys on the field are doing. It shows up in blown coverages, missing people in spots where they're supposed to be, and whiffed tackles. On special teams, it's just a function of being totally unable to execute. Things haven't gotten better through 6 games; they've progressively gotten worse.
I don't like talking about guys not being able to do the jobs their assigned to do, but I don't have a lot of confidence that the staff can improve what's been broken so badly. I think Best needs an honest conversation to say if defense and special teams don't show marked improvement over the last 5 games, the program needs to go a different direction. When you've lost 5 in a row and haven't been competitive in 4 of the 5 games, and sit dead last in FCS defense, I don't know how you proceed without significant changes.
That's quite a dance. Best needs to be addressed. This is his and his alone. It's been coming for awhile if not just the past couple of years, all the signs/dysfunction pointed to this outcome.
Every time people have wondered at the decision making, the coaching turnstile, distinct lack of focus, odd personnel groupings and not addressing obvious issues.... that's Best.
It's not malicious but it is the product of his personality and he has a losers limp he won't, hasn't or is incapable of addressing.
It's OK to disagree. The hardest part as a fan is to not make team outcomes personal. Poor leadership is inexcusable, guess that's the most personal part to me.
