Gameday Vs. Cal Poly

It's a bit too early to panic. But if push comes to shove, there's a perfectly good coach up in Rocklin....

Super, You have got to be kidding me. Tisdel and Sperbeck come from the same mold where today's football has left these coaches behind. Both are so full of themselves and major control freaks. Hire an assistant from a winning D1 BCS program and you will have a more prepared exciting product.

You know, right now I'd take Volek back as HC as long as he could get a defensive coordinator. At least Volek could score points.

It's time to panic, absolutely zero progress on both sides of the ball.

Guys, don"t panic. We played a very good team. We are very young and having a bye prior to opening BSC play will help. I'm still confident we will have a winning season. UNLV nearly beat Ore. St. last night.

A few observations and these are my personal opinions. . Cal Poly is very fast. Don't discount how good they are. I wouldn't be surprised to see them beat their next two D1A opponents.

MBT threw the ball crisply with excellent arm strength when he finally replaced JS. I would think the QB competition will be heavy the next two weeks. Brandon Reed is a stud and we need to get him the ball. We have many good WRs.

I too was curious why Dailey didn't play until the 4th qtr. Was it because of the fumble at the end of the 2nd half? I don't know but he's a huge talent. McGowan looked pretty good as well on that last drive we scored on.

I heard from a couple of people that Deionte Gordon has a serious knee injury and may need surgery and will get a medical redshirt this year.

Croxdale played on special teams so he is clearly not redshirting. I am disheartened as well. With this group of running backs there is no way we should be limited to 42 yards on the ground. I think its time for MBT to start for Smith.

Yeah I think its panic time. Clearly the team has regressed from week #1 to week #2. The defense looked unprepared and completely lost. To cal poly’s credit, they looked seamless in the transition from coaching changes and new offensive skilled positions. I didn’t expect them to play as well as they did, especially in their first game. A lot of credit goes to their coaching staff and how they were able to prepare their team. Maybe the Sac State coaches took some notes when they were down there.

I thought the Hornets were going to lock on and make it a game in the second quarter. cal poly jumped on them early and it was 17-3 when I turned the game on. (Thanks for the link Kadeezy.) But the Hornets did scratch and claw their way back into it pulling to 17-12 with a few minutes to go in the first half. Then Gordon went down and cal poly immediately exploited the change. It seemed that cal poly was just going to run out the clock and head into halftime with a lead. But they took a shot down the field and it worked. After that it seemed as though the Hornets just gave up. That was the most disappointing thing to me. 24-12 isn’t impossible to overcome, but when a team gives up, it won’t happen. I expected the defense to give up rushing yards as defending the option is no easy task, I was vey surprised at how badly the DB’s got burned play after play. I thought this was going to be one of the stronger aspects of the defense, I don’t think I could have been more wrong. The loss if Gordon will only make this secondary even worse. They’ll have to figure something out in two weeks. My recommendation is to blitz one or two LB’s every play if they want to have a remote chance of beating pass happy EWU.

In response to the lack of rushing yards, that was inevitable once the Hornets fell a few TD’s behind. I think the running game will be fine so long as they don’t fall far behind like they did this past game. With that in mind, the good is that we know they can move the ball through the air. Something they didn’t show us in week #1.

I would have given the game ball to the kicker again, but there is no excuse for missing a PAT. So I refuse to award a game ball to anyone after their performance in SLO.

VERY disappointing. Was not expecting this....wow, this sucks. Seems like both sides of the ball still think it's spring

The defense is TERRIBLE. ZERO pursuit by the LBs... Cal Poly just ran the option left and right and mixed in a deep ball every now and then.

Jason Smith looked tentative, missing open WRs by over/under throwing them. I would open up the QB competition over the next two weeks of practice.

Thank god for the bye week... Matt Nichols is going to throw for 400 yards against us, especially if Deonte isn't ready to go.

We never got a chance to establish the run because we played from behind the entire game.

Regarding Nichols throwing for 400 + yards against us. I know it was under Moosh however Nichols should be playing for us. How do we lose a kid like that and then recently lose Taiwan Jones to them also. It's a shame.

Jason Smith played terribly, I can't beleive he got the job over MBT after seeing the difference this weekend. Smith looked confused and didnt make good decisions, he often overthrew his target or threw the ball behind it.

MBT, while he only played for a short time, looked more confident and seemed to know what was going on. He was more aware and made better decisions. I'm very disappointed that Smith stayed in as long as he did, however, considering how badly the D played, the outcome may not have been much better.

At this point, even though only two games have been played, I have absolutey no confidence in Jason Smith. In fact, I lost all confidence last season when he had no clue that Sac State had never beaten Montana in football, and the Bee quoted him.

The defense didnt look that great, I expected more, but I'm not too surprised.

In all, it was a very disappointing game.

I agree, this is not time to panic. Sperbeck is a seasoned coach who knows what he is doing. The biggest thing this program has lacked is stability- a message of ditch the coach now would be horrible for the program. Remember, he just had the 2nd best recruiting class in FCS. Rome was not built in a day. I understand the microwave mentality- Some of our receivers were not here in spring ball- so there is a learning curve- Sperbeck is a solid coach- stay with him you will see some change.

hornethope, I have to take exception to your comments. Sperbeck is not seasoned at this level. It should become apparent by the last two games. Also you can't measure the last 2 years of recruiting until the recruits reach senior year for value. This team shouldn't fear anyone they play and it's on the coach to hammer that in them. A solid coach has these traits.

I heard some sad news today. Croxdale hasn't been playing RB because he tweeked his ankle earlier in the spring. He was playing on the KO team and broke a bone in his hand on Saturday and will be having surgery this week and will be a medical redshirt.
Sad for a walk-on that is in the top 3 of the whole team in strength, pound for pound at 5'7".

wow i flew in to california for this,,,this team has alot of talent thats not on the field!!!!!!what is decordinator doing the head coach doent even watch the defense i seen seven missed takles on one series where the head coach not even watching...number 30 fumble and u take him out till 4th qtr wtf!!!!!and yes put another qb in,,,, well i saw a good team in the summer with speed...where is that team ......the coaches are breaking these football player the season is over!!!! i wont be flying in anymore,, good luck with these coaches!!!!

Yep, I heard the news too, bummer. Call me a fanboy for Crox, but i will still follow the team for the season. He will heal, and will compete and contribute next year.

This should bring up use of other backs, should Evander or Dailey go down. Good that we have some time to heal, refocus, and hopefully improve for the next game. Didn't see the Poly game, but by all the above comments, it didn't sound pretty.

-GO HORNETS!

That's too bad... Always good to see a local boy out on the field (Though I had missed him on special teams this year)... Best wishes to Jake in his recovery.

So now Sperbecks depth chart looks like this (though I have Dailey #1)//

1. Evander Wilkins
2. Terrance Dailey
3. Sam McCowan
4. Kenslow Smith (RS?)
5. Jake Croxdale (mRS)
6. Bryan Hilliard (mRS?)

I knew GCM was going to get my reference. Figured SHA and perhaps Kadeezy would have jumped in on that. I guess a newbie on the board can't be expected to remember that the Big Cat is Sierra's AD. No, I wouldn't want Tisdel, either. He was a junior Woody Hayes at Nevada from all I heard. The last thing we need is an Abatemarco clone on the football team.

I’ve been following Hornet football for a mere three years, certainly less time than most of the regular posters here, so I admit up front that I lack the historical perspective that others have. As a fan, this site is one I read regularly, and although I enjoy all the comments, punditry is not my thing so I'm not really trying to start a debate. But the recent round of hair pulling and teeth gnashing makes me think that the frustration felt by longtime followers of the program may be a tad overblown, and just maybe a different perspective from a relative newcomer is worth considering.

First of all, unrealistic expectations can result in more negativity than actual circumstances warrant. Although hanging tough (or even a winning) against UNLV and Cal Poly would have been great, it should not be a huge shock that these two games are losses, although a better showing (particularly last week) would have been encouraging. A few comments:

In regard to the defense, the team lost three all conference stud linebackers and is starting basically from scratch by shuffling personnel and bringing in new players. That is a position where game experience counts for a lot, and it is going to take a little time to gain that. The secondary looked like it was going to be vulnerable during spring and summer scrimmages, and the loss of Deonte Gordon certainly doesn’t help. The D-line seems pretty solid, but until the secondary tightens up and the linebackers get better at reading and reacting we will struggle. But that does not necessarily mean we have to wait until next year to see a big improvement in these areas, particularly against lesser teams than the ones recently faced. I predict rapid progress over the next few games.

The O line is also pretty solid, and if Dailey and Wilkens stay healthy look for good things to happen. The receivers look very good, and will be exciting to watch this year. As far as QB goes, I was at the CP game, and although Jason Smith would probably be the first the say he had a rough outing, I saw a couple of passes I think the receivers would also say they should have caught. Losing Tony Washington was no small thing, but give the new group a couple of games and we will see a deep strike threat emerge that will balance out the run game. Maybe MBT is the answer, but it's nice to have choices. That's another positive.

The bright side is that the Hornets are a young, talented team, but as pointed out elsewhere, it may take another year for new recruits to make a big impact. This program is definitely pointed in the right direction. Let’s not lose sight of the fact that Cal Poly and UNLV are two excellent teams we were playing up to, and I believe they will continue to show that this year against other opponents. Sac now enters BSC play, and although it’s a tough conference, most of the teams are obviously not going to present the same challenge these first two games did. There is a good change the offense will settle in, the passing game will gain consistency (who ever the QB is) and the running game will deliver the results we are hoping for. The defense will need them to keep us in the game while it works through their problems. But I think that can, and will happen!

It’s only two games in, guys. It’s a bit early to open our bellies. Let’s see what happens the next couple of games before we write off the program, call for public executions, and swear never to go to another game. I don’t think I’m being a Pollyanna by saying this. And if I ever submit another post here, I hope it will be at the end of the season just to say I told you so. Sorry this ran long. I need to finish my kool-aid now and go back to staring at the sun.

The bar has been raised. We all want Wins. We are all contributing time and money and don't want to see or hear any excuses. Didn't we play that little pony coach a bunch of time before? Didn't we have some intelligence gathered on this guy? Was his game so different? Why wasn't the head coach watching? Why were we so tentative on offense? I can't even comment on the defense because they played almost the entire game.

Go Hornets!!!

Dos Centavos! Welcome to the board!

100% quality post, and look forward to your thoughts as the season progresses. That's what this board is all about.

Was I disappointed in the first two games, yes. But I think Dos Centavos made a great post with a perspective we should all embrace. This is still a young team and more importantly, we played two very, very good football teams. If young teams make mistakes against very good teams they get beat.

Eastern Washington won't be a team that will be anything like what we have faced. I think we will see much better execution after having two weeks to prepare. I think we've set the expectations to high for so early in the year. To be candid we are really a year or so away from being a BSC playoff contender.

So take a deep breath and support this team, the coaches and players. They want to win more than anyone and are putting in the time and effort necessary. I still believe we are on the right path and I hope we stay the course. Support the Hornets!
