GET STUDENT BODY TO GAMES

How can Weber get the students to the Games?!? I am a student, and I am pissed by the lack of student support. There was better involvement at my high school, in the Greater Ogden Area, than at Weber State events. We've lost the entertainment value of the games, by limiting student interaction. How many people do you really know at Weber State? Lets face it, a student has to put forth a pretty enormous effort to get to know anybody. The same type of effort needs to be exerted by student leaders to get students to athletic events. I see more BYU and Utah apperal than I see Weber State apperal, why is that? Its an image thing more than anything else. In a sense, we are embarrased to be Weber State students. People see Weber as "JUST WEBER." This sentiment needs to be changed, but how can it be done when nobody is willing to put forth the effort to change the negative stigma. Its really pathetic. Students are more loyal to other schools, than the one they attend. Flat out, support YOUR SCHOOL!! You're going to Weber State right now, so you might as well make it your school and make the best of it. Student Leaders get off your Aces and do some work! How come only the PURPLE PAK (and they really dont' do as much as they should) are the only ones working at getting students to the games, where are the student body officers, senators, or other leaders? Do they do anything? Just showing up to a game doesn't count? Its your job to get students excited, and participating! Thank You Gene Sessions, and doing your part for getting students excited about Weber State.

Student Benefits:

1. FREE ATTENDANCE AT ALL HOME ATHLETIC EVENTS": Why spend money when you can do something for free. At least for Football and Basketball.
2. You might meet someone of the opposite sex that is hot: Go for Social Reasons, meet some new friends. Get out of your comfort zone and your house.
3. You'll find out how awesome Weber State really is! College is to be enjoyed, not endured.

One thing I've noticed is a lot of the students at Weber aren't the brightest twinkling lights on the tree. If they don't want to enjoy college or even have a college experience just know its there loss not yours. A lot of our students are in a hurry to start working. They will come to regret working and going to school.

Regarding the "Just Weber" comment posted by PURPLEFORLIFE...

I was in Las Vegas for a work convention last week and during the nearly 30 hours I spent at the poker table, people would often ask where I was from, where I went to school, and so on. When I'd mention Weber State they'd say...Hey, didn't they knock off North Carolina a few years ago? And I'd say...actually, it was almost ten years ago. It would blow their mind. That 1999 NCAA Weber State win had some staying power in the collective consciousness, and Weber isn't "Just Weber" to the national audience. They're among the original mid-major bracket-busters that are now so common.

But it's pretty sad when out-of-staters give Weber more respect than those who actually attend the school.

Lots of ignorant students is what it comes down to.

Regarding the win over North Carolina it was the biggest underdog upset at the time. I believe there have been 2 14 seeds to win since then.

UNC also had won at least a first round game 19 straight NCAA Tourneys...it would be like UM losing to Weber in football twice in one year!

Also you have factor in that North Carolina had gone to 2 Final Fours before Weber and another Final Four the next season. Made the win that much more meaningful, lots of people stil consider it one of the biggest Tourney upsets.

And after all WSU basketball has been the flagship program and ambassador of our univerisity for 40+ years now. What else have we been known for? We'd be UVU all this time minus the basketball program.

Tomorrows game is against the hated Cougars!!! This is a HUGE game for the CATS. A win against BYU, could really propel the team, and give them some much needed confidence. The students need to be at the game tomorrow, and someone needs to keep them loud and rockin!

With Finals ending tomorrow, do you think there will be anyone at the game? I'm hoping for 3,500 (PATHETIC). With just a handful of students, maybe 50.

I kinda have a feeling that its going to be a rather sparse crowd over the next few home games. That just shows the committment of the university to getting fans to the games. Has anyone else ever said this, Fire Kim?!?

I think everyone has said that!!!

I know everybody and their dog has a facebook account, why not get some sort of announcement on the program, Myspace to. If everyone invited their friends then people would be getting invited over and over again to come to the WSU game. A lot of people would know about it, and hopefully more fans would come, especially students. For those people who have unlimited text, why don't they text everyone in their phones, and those people text everyone in their phones and so on. That could get more to the games. There are solutions to the problem, that are easy and only take a few mins to do.

WSU could set up an auto text that goes out to all the students, just like redbox every monday night, free movie night... gitty up. Make it go to everyone and then if they want to opt out they can.

This may be a little of topic but have they ever considered having taped delayed games on TV (channel 17), like BYU used to do on kbyu before the MTN. Like a text message just one more thing to remind people about Weber State athletics.

I don't think I have ever said anything like that.  :D

Honestly I think this problem is more of just a sports thing. I grew up in the Ogden area and practically none of my friends were Weber St fans. Weber was for some reason always viewed as nothing. This attitude needs to change. First students need to be reminded that they're getting their degree from: Weber and not BYU or Utah. Second, alumni need to be reminded where they went to school and they need to support their school. They would never root for a rival high school, maybe we should use that analogy. Heck, I even have cousins that went to Weber and their kids are being taught to be either BYU or Utah fans instead. More advertising would help as well. If you saw Weber St stuff all over Ogden it would be great. I also think that many are unaware of Weber's history in basketball. I don't know how but it needs to be taught. Other positives of Weber need to be shown to the community so that it stops becoming the last choice for many high school kids. Many use the commuter school thing as an excuse but that is bull crap, you ever see how many students you get to an Institute activity? Let's change the attitude please!

Good point after all having the 24th highest winning percentage in NCAA Div I history is nothing to be ashamed of. Dominating the Big Sky in basketball more than Montana has in football also is nothing to be ashamed of.

Getting to the NCAA Tourney as much as BYU and Utah State with a program that is 40+ years younger is also nothing to be embarrassed about.

When The Sporting News printed that list of the greatest DI basketball programs of all time a few years ago they had Weber at #51, that is pretty good no? There are 347 DI basketball schools. USU was #82.

i've said it before. it wouldn't hurt to form better relations with the institute. those guys always have students to their activities. if we could get them a little more supportive of wsu sports, i think that would help a lot. also competitions at games between wsu clubs and organizations would work well too. I also really like how bball is doing a lot of promotions at the games this year. Free basketballs to first 2000 kids today. I just hope these promotions get advertised enought so people actually hear about them.

Promotions are good, but what's the deal with just giving the balls to kids? Would anyone reading this not like a free basketball (assuming it's a real ball, and not one of those little toy ones they throw during the games that my sister uses as dog toys). Last week's water bottle giveaway was pretty cool. My brother and I are anxiously awaiting beanie night. Then I can beat the cold with style.

Aren't most of the Weber State Student Officers already well connected with the Institute? I really don't understand why they, the officers or the advisors, don't do more to promote Weber State. In my recollection, the years that the students support the school the best are the years the officers do the most interacting with students, promoting, and being examples of school spirit. Also, why don't the university officials think of other mechanisms that will get students out to the games. Its pathetic that out of a student body of 21,000 students that Weber is, on average, only getting about 100 students. Aren't students getting scholarship, stipends, and other benefits for the purpose of improve student attendance? Well...They are failing and doing a really poor job. If they aren't going to do it, find someone who will. Just like a coach, an advisor needs to search for the best talent and those that have the best work ethic, and then put them in the leadership spots, and give them the money, and if they don't get the job done bench them and make them pay back the money.

How many students can we expect at the games this week? Out of 21 thousand, I'm thinking we should be able to get a couple of thousand...What would it take to do that?

I hate to say it but unfortunately a couple thousand for the students would be pretty high. I would love to see it happen though. We need to start advertising like right now if we even want to reach that. More advertisement on the campus would be good, (not just small signs), as well as maybe around Ogden, if we can do that. Word of mouth needs to start like right now. Everyone needs to tell their friends about it and convince them to come. I only wish that the student body officers would actually try to get people to come out and maybe try to come themselves.

Anybody down to help get something done for this week's games?

Me, Talhad, & Purplefogdog passed out flyers at UV for the games. We had 1,000 flyers, probably have about 500+ left to hand out at the bell tower or where ever for anyone that wants to help.

Also, the big wood signs we might do today if anyone wants to help paint em n move em around.

I think 2,000 students should be our goal, cuz as long as the team wins that just makes it that much easier.

The free beanie and hat alone would get a bunch of students...LOL!
