Good news, bad news

Bad news first... Our D still looked like a work in progress. I don't know if they produced a single 3 and out all night against the most meager offense they'll see all year.

Good news, the Huskies offense looked pretty damn bad tonight as well. I thought our goose would be cooked by UW based on the Eagle D's performance earlier, but then I sat down and watched the second half of the UW game and it doesn't look all that unreasonable to think they can get a few stops.

Still, I really expected more from this defensive unit. The secondary is all over the place, the D line gets pushed around, and even our strong linebacker corps doesn't look much better than mediocre. They're going to need to improve a LOT to see Eastern to the top of the Big Sky and make a deep playoff run. I think the talent is there, but the results aren't as of yet. I still feel like too much of our success hinges on whether or not Vernon can make enough big plays.

Lindquist sucks.
I thought he looked good early in the game where he rolled out and threw on the run but the rest of the game the whole offence seemed out of sinc. He was a lot faster running the ball then I thought he would be. This was his first game in almost 3 years and I think its a little early to write him off after on game.
There must be a reason he finished #2 in ESPN's Elite Eleven competition. This is where Peterson gets to earn his paycheck.

Well he did last night anyway.

Hard to figure exactly what EWU will see from UW offensively next week as it will almost undoubtedly be Cyler Miles under center. Lindquist had a chance to make Petersen think about who will start at QB against the Eagles and fell flat on his face.

The announcers last night said that Lindquist is a better passer than Cyler Miles. Do you agree?

In terms of potential, probably, in terms of actuality right now no. I can't see Miles doing any worse than Lindquist did against Hawaii. I don't know how rusty Miles will be, missing spring practice and not playing in a game yet, but as a rookie he had two solid games last year against UCLA and Oregon State, both on the road.

Things change so much week to week in college football it's impossible to say that one team will beat another based on how they played the previous week. But UW is vulnerable right now. If EWU can play smart, get some timely stops on D and limit turnovers (way too many fumbles against Montana Western) they can definitely come out of Seattle next weekend with a win. I'm really looking forward to this game!

Let's talk about the elephant in the room. What's going on with our team? We were sloppy against SHSU. I waived it off as the first game, but we weren't sloppy our first game against Oregon State. We were damn sharp and prepared coming out of the gates. Now, I am hearing we were sloppy against NAIA. Two games in, and we are still sloppy?

I've been scratching my head trying to figure out what is different this year. And you know, I think being number one has actually gotten into our players' heads. Maybe our team plays harder and better as the underdogs. Hopefully seeing how sharp NDSU was out of the gates and being the underdog vs UW will light some fires under some asses.

Cyler didn't play as bad as Lindquist did last night when he got playing time last year. That said, he also didn't throw it that much.

I don't know, I am just completely unimpressed and disappointed in the performance of most of the team last night.

I think the team is going to be both physically and mentally prepared to compete toe-to-toe with the Huskies. I am not concerned.

The one player I noticed for the huskies was Ross. Speed demon to say the least. Has Kasen Williams recovered from his leg injury?

Yes, Kasen is fully recovered. Lindquist threw the ball "towards" him several times last night. You know you are having a terrible night throwing the ball if you can't get it even remotely close to into Kasen's huge catch radius.

That's the thing, though. We are not close to looking like the #1 team in FCS right now. Multiple penalties, having the ball literally stripped out of our receivers hands (twice), fumbles, etc. etc. is not what a #1 team looks like. We were playing down several levels of competition, but you wouldn't have been able to tell last night. Baldwin needs to get these guys fired up in practice this week, because right now I feel like this team is just thinking that the success that we've had the past few years is going to magically carry them to winning games. And that ain't the case; it takes hard work.

Overall, I think we can clean up the mental errors and play a lot cleaner. My biggest concern, of course, is with how inept our defense has looked during the first two games. I don't know what the problem is, but this team needs to get some things figured out because we will get lit up by UW and several Big Sky teams like Sac State and PSU as well. I think the 10-2 record some of you are predicting is a pipe dream. We look much more like 8-4 or even 7-5 at this point.

7-5? We have 10 games left so we're going 5-5 the rest of the way? Don't think so. We are who we've always been and there's been much more good than bad.

Was I at the same game?
Our D got beat once long... Their only td.
Yes our corners need to play faster and taller this week.
Ronnie and company will keep the long runs in check and if our line can match the pressure the Warriors gave, Linquest or Miles or whoever draws the short straw, will have a forgetful night.

I'm glad the 2s and 3s got some reps in. It's going to be a long season. We will need them

We have always given up a ton of yards on defense. I don't see this season being any different. What I will say is that we need to figure out a way to come up with some more turnovers, because that'll likely be the difference in some of the closer games we'll play this season.

This game is likely the only loss of the season. And, I am not giving up on beating the huskies yet. The team just came off an emotional season opener that had a relatively large amount of hype associated with it. They beat a loaded SHSU team which will definitely be in the playoffs. Yesterday they played Montana Western, a good NAIA team. You couldn't have scripted a bigger letdown game than this, and they could have scored 100 points on Montana Western. Yes, our defense is not the strength of the team. This team is kinda like a WAC team of the late 80's, early 90's. I think it is a great football team to watch. I would much rather watch this team than NDSU.

Exactly. Our defense has cost us a chance at the national championship two years in a row, and don't seem to have improved at all as of yet. You can't count on turnovers, but they're nice when you can get them. Ultimately, you have to be able to just dig in and get stops, and we're not getting them.

It's still early, so no reason to push eject... But I really thought the D was going to show some improvement.

Rjones--- excellent work on putting together that gif so quickly. That play was the clear highlight of an otherwise sedate evening.

That was the most boring 32 point win I've ever sat through... it looked like the team just went through the motions. I'll give VA credit as he again showed why he's such a monster at this level and credit him more for the fact he cleaned up some of the sloppy throws he had the week prior. Sadly, Bomber and Bourne each had a pair of unfortunate drops in the second half on plays that would have gone for 25 yards plus. But Bomber and Bourne, along with Mitchell, appear to be Eastern's best weapons thus far.
