Great Defense Yesterday

Congrats on a swarming D effort at Cal. 21 of the 45 points allowed came off special teams and an interception. We also had 2 takeaways. If we play defense like that going forward I feel good about conference play.

Cals D really had us off our normal pace. I was disappointed we couldn’t move the chains on makeable 3rd downs. We eventually found some rhythm late.

Good job coaches and players. Time to surprise those who picked us last in the Sky.

Out of the frying pan and into the fire next week against a North Dakota team who beat No.5 Sam Houston yesterday.

Is there a reason why Michael Dean is not having the ball passed to him? One reception for 1 yard gain. A waste of talent. Why suit up?

To answer your question Cal was focusing on him.

My overall impression is that ISU played hard and physical. They have nothing to hang their heads about. You can tell Cal (and their fan base) didn't take ISU seriously. Half empty stadium, plus Cal looked sloppy and arrogant. Dropped passes, turnovers, penalties. They completely thought they were going to destroy and embarrass ISU.

If Cal plays like that in two weeks against Oregon they'll get drilled.

D fense showed up yesterday! Congrats to Cooper and the defense, it was fun to listen to the Cal announcers giving props to ISU all night.
I am a little worried that the announcers were questioning TG, they made him out to be missing a lot of open recievers...

It is more like Tanner does not throw him the ball. He gets open down field with his speed and quickness.

He was bracketed all day yesterday. You have no damn clue what your are talking about, as usual.

He is bracketed by every team according to you which is not true as usual. Why would a PAC 12 team like Cal bracket him? He is not a game breaker against Cal. If he anything Cal would bracket Mitch Gueller, which they did not, who is the all star receiver. Did you not listen to the Cal announcers. They said ISU receivers were open down field and Tanner was not seeing his open receivers? These one and three yard passes do not cut the mustard.

Earlier in the year Coach Phen indicated that Dean drew a double team a lot last year which opened up things for Mitch. Wasn’t able to watch the game and only heard part of the radio broadcast because I was traveling. Anyone know whether Cal doubled up Dean? That might explain why he appeared to be MIA.

Ty left the game after he was targeted by a Cal defender. It sounded like a concussion. Any word on his status? Any other notable injuries?

Watch the game replay on the Pac12 network, then you tell me.

Of course he locked on to Mitch and of course he missed some open targets but what the hell do you expect against one of the best defenses in the country thru 3 weeks.

It’s early and you will get plenty of your “man crush” as the season moves along. I would look for D. Horton to have a huge year as well.

I watched the game and no double team or bracket as you say. Tanner just looks for Mitch as his primary receiver and it showed up again in this game. Read the only only comment in the Idaho Journal in the Cal game. I am not the only one that watched the game. The big three pass plays went to Mitch. Everybody else got one to three yards.

I have to admit, it looked like Mitch was getting doubled a lot last night. Every QB has his favorite receiver, and Mitch is a good one, but I actually question some of the balls thrown toward him. Lincoln Kennedy was the color commentator last night, and he did say that Tanner seemed to key in and lock in on Mitch when there were a lot of open white shirts. When Tanner was getting pressure, Lincoln said something to the effect that Tanner panics and just looks for Mitch, nobody else. It was hard for me to see down field when the camera is focused on the QB and then the shot switches to the intended receiver.

That being said, Tanner will study the video and take in the coaching he gets.

Regarding defense, I'm cautiously optimistic. Like what I see, so far. Special teams are better, still need some work obviously, but I think the true freshmen kickers (Ryan and Sheidow) are going to be good ones.

Speaking of young players coach Phen said in the post game that 1/3 of the guys were on their first D1 road trip! That's crazy to think.
We're Young but is it too soon to be optimistic?

Mitch was not doubled team. No receiver was doubled team. It was man coverage or zone coverage by Cal defense all day long on our receivers. To me, Tanner did not have a good game. He took way too many sacks by not releasing the ball as he had time in the pocket to throw the ball on most of his sacks taken. He focused on throwing the ball way too much to Mitch. I would be pissed off if I was a receiver after viewing the game film.

According to the last press conference coach Phen is fully aware of the lopsided recieving stats and QB targets. I am a little concerned still however this wasn't addressed during the game, it is Coach Phens specific group.
It makes me feel like 1 of a few things may be happening, poor in game communication, it was a strategic plan, it was a brother to brother inside deal. Maybe other things are happening. None of them good for the team. I don't know what but it is in the past, hopefully.

On another note, you can sure recognize the frustration from opposition coaches. Both in Cal, and in ND, I like that!

I agree somewhat with you guys. Remember this was PAC 12 guys pressuring our QB. He will distribute better in our conference. Relax.

Are you saying our OL did not block well during passing downs therefore he locked in on Mitch on most passing plays? It looked like the brother to brother show to me. Maybe, Tanner will find away to pass to other receivers that are open instead of locking in on Mitch most of the time.
