UND, South Dakota and several other schools that will be Division I independents next season may form a league in 2008-09, in hopes of starting competition with the 2009-10 school year.

The new all-sports conference reportedly would call itself the Great West. Among schools mentioned as possible members are Texas-Pan American, Seattle University, Chicago State, Houston Baptist, Utah Valley State and the New Jersey Institute of Technology.

UND May Have New Conference

Some of us are thinking that this "conference" could also have affiliate members in certain sports. Specifically, I wonder if Idaho St., Northern Colorado, and Weber St. will join as softball members. Perhaps this is the conference that was mention this winter that those three would join along with UND, USD, and Utah Valley.

From Today's Salt Lake Tribune:

Utah Valley University will announce today at a noon news conference at the McKay Events Center that it is joining the Great West Conference, according to a spokesman in the athletic office.

The schools UVU will compete with will be North Dakota and South Dakota, New Jersey Tech, Houston Baptist and Texas Pan American. North Dakota and South Dakota will compete in football as well, against the league's pre-existing members.
