Greatest game in EWU history?

Great win by the Eags today! My initial thought was this may have been the greatest win in EWU history, possibly tied with 2004 playoff win against Southern Illinois.

I understand that, at face value, beating a lackluster Montana (at the beginning of the season, at home, with the griz coming off a loss...) isn't the greatest feat. However, the new turf was unveiled, the overall attendance record was set, the STUDENT attendance record was set, and the administration developed a strategy to keep UM fans to a minimum. But most impressive to me was the fans rushing the field. I played at Eastern for 5 years, and it seemed like when we had a home game, the few students who were at the game left by half-time.

Could this be a turning point in EWU football?

Great win, no doubt. I'm still in Cheney enjoying the festivities.

But best ever? ONLY from the possible standpoint that because it was the first game on Red Turf, it will garner some national attention and we beat the Griz.

However, and this goes back a ways, our BIGGEST win was 1985 v. Idaho in the first round of the playoffs 42-38. That was the most amazing game ever and put us on the national map.

By the way, despite being overjoyed with the win, the fact is MONTANA WASN'T ALL THAT GREAT. Both teams made SOOOOO many mistakes... we had every opportunity to put that game in the bag well before the last :09 seconds. We were better all over the field and still made enough mistakes to almost lose it. Luckily, Montana nearly matched us mistake for mistake... but no doubt in my mind, the better team won.

Montana really is a 1-2 team right now, it isn't bad luck on their part. The conference is really tough this year and the Griz are only fair-to-middlin'.

I guess my point was more about Eastern football as an organization. Starting the ball rolling with recruiting and what not. Keep in mind, we started off down 14 at home. Maybe I just hate Montana more than anything.

By the way, I couldn't believe the refing! I've never seen an official crew not blatantly biased towards the griz. Nice to see...

I'm with FormerEag on this one. This game set a standard for the rest of the season. If we beat the Cat's next week get ready for a possible overall home attendance record.

College football is first about the students, then the alumni and next come guys (and gals) like me who love college football. I remember the 1985 game against Idaho, along with the Southern Illinois win, the win against McNeese State, our win over Montana in the 1997 playoffs on a beautiful day at Albi. All great wins but to see our students flood the field twice was unbelievable. For those of you who were in Missoula last year and in 2007, revenge is sweet as we should have won both those games. Hope things go well the next two weekends on the road but I think you'll see many fans who jumped on the bandwagon today join us on October 9 against Northern Arizona. The tailgate was rocking and my wife tells me that when we won she heard folks honking their cars in downtown Spokane. She had to leave early but she will be back for the next home game. Congratulations to Coach Baldwin and his staff for coaching these guys and thanks to Coach Wulff and our former staff who recruited many of our players. Paul also recruited Michael Roos and we all owe Michael and his wife Kat a big thank you for what they have done for their alma mater. A last thank you to all members of the Eagle Athletic Association. Your dollars make the program possible.

Congratulations to the Eagles on a nice win today, your EWU team played well against the Griz. I hope our Bobcats can give you guys a competitive and exciting game next week, good luck to both of our squads, play hard and injury free, Go Bobcats!

It's certainly up there. I remember becoming an Eastern/BSC fan in 2004 my freshman year when I was in the Marching Band (drumline). My HS team (Kamiakin - Kenn., WA) had always won the majority of their games while I was a student there, with only one team really giving us trouble... Pasco across the river. It was refreshing coming to Eastern and seeing the team do so well in 2004... picked up right where my HS team left off. Then Montana was the new Pasco. I listened to that SIU game on the radio as I was back home in the TC. Going off that monumental win to witness a heart-wrenching loss in the final seconds to Sam Houston. I was there the next year when Meyer, Kimble and Vijil dismantled the Griz in Missoula. I've seen some high high points and low low points for this Eagle team in my short time here. Tonight's win ranks up there. Tonight was my first time rushing the field. And the second :D . It was refreshing that for once, when we needed it most, the game went our way against the Griz. Add to it that it was our first game on the new turf... a night that is now cemented in history with special regard.... it was just amazing. We're a program on the rise, that's for sure. Love us or hate us, we're getting our brand of 'never say die football' out there. Big win tonight. GO EAGS!!!

This one ranks up there - but here's a few that stick out in my mind.

1.) 1997 win against Idaho at Joe Albi
2.) 1997 win against Montana in Missoula
3.) 2005 win against Montana in Missoula
4.) 2004 v. Southern Illinois
5.) 2002 against Montana at Joe Albi (knocked them out of 1st place last game of the year and broke their NCAA record streak of wins.)

Let's go back further for some more:

1983 win over Long Beach State in our first years as an FCS/I-AA team, and our first over an FBS program 20-17... maybe our biggest upset ever

1985 win over Idaho 42-38 in the first round of the playoffs when Idaho was ranked #1

1990 win over Montana in Missoula 36-35 after being down 35-17 with 8 minutes left and losing our starting QB

1991 win over Montana in Cheney in which Montana had no first downs in the first half

1993 win over Boise State 21-19 in Cheney to win us our first Big Sky title in football

I heard this from some UM fans as well. Some "in the know" in the front office told me it was not a plan to cut down on UM fan attendance but just treating the Grizzlies the same as they treat other teams. We offered the Griz fans the same number of tickets they offered us and other teams.
Sound fair to me.

Yeah, the Griz were allotted the same number of tickets. The only difference was that we stopped selling single game tickets to that game and made Griz fans pay the EAA fee or buy season tickets to attend. -- but that was only for ticket purchases abvoe and beyond the visitor allotment.
