1. Does or has Downing ever shown emotion?
2. I feel sorry for the OC- the line is so beat up and so not blocking- that would make any playcaller look bad..
Scratch that, I feel sorry for Baca! He didn't have a chance. He looked really good at times. The O-line has to improve. O-line recruiting needs to get better.........
3. Downing (fullback that is) got Baca nailed 4 times.. And two of those where look out blocks..
Lookout blocks= meaning he didn't block anybody, he just yelled lookout... Horrible blocking by little Downing..
4. Matt King and Askew continues to play hard.. Very impressive and great leadership!
5. However, the so called stud-J. Eddie........ To me he's playing like he doesn't give a darn..
Is there another capable middle linebacker? If so- put him in. And move J. Eddie back to D. End.
Maybe that'll give the d-line some push.
6. D-tackles are still doing their job. BUT the ends need to get some pressure. Maybe- J. Eddie could do that.
7. #4 can't think of his name- much, much improved. Good game on your part!
8. Quit pulling QB's- they're not the ones missing the blocks..
9. Downing, hire yourself a special teams coach.. You're not capable!!
10. Little Downing- block somebody..

Ok- my ranting is over!

Good break down of the game. I just can't stand bad play from linemen and I don't think we've had as many bad o-linemen under any regime like the current. I don't care who the coaching staff is next year, if it's Downing fine, but we've gotta get better linemen on both sides of the ball.

If Hinrichs doesn't have the onions to cut this guy lose than he needs to go too.

It's not unheard of for athletic programs that have even a small bit of ambition to fire the AD that is too loyal and won't fire the terrible head football coach.

Keep in mind it was only 3 short years ago Sac State needed a miracle tipped hail mary to beat us and now they DOMINANTED us for 60 minutes, so they have gotten better and we have???????? ask yourself that question...

Scary...

That reminds me, Seeing Sac State hanging tough with the big boys reminds me of being in high school and seeing some of my friends make the "in crowd" and leave me in the dust with the rest of the nerds.

"However, the so called stud-J. Eddie........ To me he's playing like he doesn't give a darn.."

Finished with 10 tackles, tied for the team high with King. Consistently the top tackler, game in, game out, with King right there.

What did the scoreboard say though?

I was thinking the same thing after the game. It wasn't that long ago that they were on par with us in the conference and now they've leap froged us and they might compete for a conference title either this year or next. Must be nice.

Come on bearsradio...

J Eddie is the middle linebacker.. 10 tackles with 3 300 plus pounders in front of him eating up blockers should be the normal.. One of his D tackles is 370.

He's not playing with the same fire as last year.. It's like two different players..

He still looks good on the end-- maybe thats what he likes!!

That's what I'm saying, even look at last year, we were able to come back and almost win the game. Getting dominated by Mich. St. & Montana is one thing but Sac State? We need to clean house, maybe the new oline coach and Petterson are kept, other than that everyone has to go. I think those two are good coaches and doing the best with what they have.

I agree Eddy should be moved back to Dline, he seems to do more damage there. How many time did the QB scramble for 10+ yards and there's not even someone in the picture?

Oline, I don't know what's up with them, I think we have decent size but just can't block anybody. Maybe its time to start putting in some of the back ups.

We'll be lucky if a 100 fans show up at next weeks game.

I agree and have said that Downing is hard to watch.. A coach that shows very little emotion is a strange thing to see in my opinion.. And- Downings special teams haven't been very special this season...
BUT- like it's been said- he's probably not going anywhere.. Somebody posted he has a 3 year contract- is that for sure?

O-line coach- this is a stop gap for him. He won't be here that long. Too many creditials..

Peterson- how can you all say that he should stay? Who knows? With the O-line being so bad right now, it's hard to know what Peterson has to offer..

Who recruited all of these O-lineman? Was that Darnell?
A better O-line would change this entire team..
The offense could possibly control the ball, move the chains, control the clock, score more points!! More importantly- allow the defense to breathe a little.
Defense is usually pretty solid. Yesterday was 14-7 until the blocked punt, then the fumble in the end zone.
Then the changing of qb's..... All of a sudden the defense was on the field alot--ALOT. No defense can stay on the field that much and not give up points..

newuncfan is very accurate in so many ways. i'm so close to joining the negative band waggoneers on here. i just don't get it.. wtf was that saturday? we faced, by my zippo opinions(as ive been told here), an average offense and a quick, but just averaged sized d. and we cant game plan for that? uh hello csu? can we send greg back to you? 100+ plays in the o, and were gonna kill ourselves running between the tackles with our smaller of our 2 stud rbs, again, wtf.....uh scott. this is the guy that runs outside the tackles. you left dre at home, if you didnt know......i know we are so much better than this, i do think coach greg and bidel are great hires, but somebody needs lead these kids. there is no passion or emotion from anyone on this staff, why? it should start with scott, but that aint gonna happen. then who?

Seems so easy to blame an offense that isn't working on one group, such as offensive line. I didn't see fingers being pointed at the o-line in the first three weeks when UNC was leading the conference in rushing, or during the Michigan State game when they ran for nearly 4.5 yards per carry and held the currently 11th ranked team in the FCS sackless. Granted, they are not playing well and need to pick it up, but that applies universally to the whole offense.

O-line did play well the first 2 weeks.. They looked like a Alex Gibbs O-line, pulling and sliding around.
BUT- the first game was against a Div. 2 school. And ever since the first two games I believe they've had 2 O-line players hurt.
O-line improvement would help everything!

Forgot to mention this the other day.
Twice Saturday I shook my head when 2 awesome plays occured. Once Matt King just leveled a guy. Something we use to call a de-cleater.. I mean he just rocked the guy. Another instance- Hewitt did the same. He just blew the guy up- another de-cleater.
De-cleater- when the person that gets hits has his cleats pointed toward the sky.
Both times, both players were excited---BUT the rest of the team just kinda walked back to the huddle like nothing big happened. They, the team is following Downings leadership. Downing doesn't get excited and show emotion, so his players don't either.
When those two hits occured- the entire team should have gone nuts..

Football is an emotional, crazy game thats full of collisions. Players need to feed off of each others energy and emotions. I see the o-line coach yelling and showing emotion. I see all of the defensive coaches yelling and getting into it. But Downing- maybe he was a Tom Landry or Dan Reeves fan- never do I see emotion from him. I just don't get it.

BTW- please, please stay with Baca- he looked pretty darn good when he had time!

What's up with the running backs? two questions A- Why was 'Dre not traveling to the game and B - Where is Josh Morton?

Josh Morton - out for the season before the season ever started - leg injury.

'Dre Harris - concussion - did not make the trip.

Listened to the coaches show tonight. Coach was very unhappy with everyone after the Sac State game. He's putting the blame on everyone, player and coaches and he's right. When you play that bad it is everyone fault. Going back to the offensive line - and Downing did talk a lot about it on tonight show, and mentioned all the injuries. I don't know many teams in the conference that would be productive with that many injuries. We can't use that as an excuse, but it is a reality. We are really hurting there.

Ok- so Downing discussed the problems with the o-line on his show.
I know he realizes that better line play could lengthen drives, control the clock, put some points on the board, allow the defense to rest some..

So- Offensive coaches and Downing- Whatcha gonna do?
Suggestions:
Bubble screens
TE screens
running back screens
quick hitters to TE's and slot receivers
Slide your line and run some rollouts

You don't use Sewell as a receiver anyhow. I think he has 1 reception all year. Quit releasing him- keep him in for max protection.

Fullbacks need to pick up blitzes...

FOCUS ON PROTECTION AND RUN BLOCK SCEMES THIS WEEK..

How about Peterson do something other than run up the middle on first down? Everyone in the stadium knows its coming. Three words for you, coach: Play. Action. Pass.

The difference was the coaching. That was Sperbeck’s first year and he just started building the program. I think that is a good indicator on how each HC and staff has improved their respective programs. Like GL said in the other thread, keep your heads up, one solid coaching hire can make the difference. We were stuck with a terrible HC (referenced as the Moosh Era by Hornet fans) for 4 long torturous years; we know what you guys are going through and it is definitely not fun.
