Hawaii receives MWC football invite

They’ve been in contact with UNT and other non-football schools instead.

Uh, what UNT are you talking about? North Texas has a football team. They've had a crappy year, to be sure, but they essentially started the change-the-coach spree continued by the Cowboys and Vikings and are doing fairly well, at least given how they started.

Of course, I have a horse in that fight. The Mean Green's interim head coach was my position coach at UOP. LOL.

Was North Texas and they already rejected Benson earlier tonight. Staying in the Sun Belt. WAC is running out of options. I think the Academy of Art and DeVry are the next two on their list. Not looking good.

I hope Wanless and Gonzo have wised up and changed their stance about the BW. I think the move is more in need for sustainability than anything else. The reduction in travel costs alone would make the move worthwhile. It really depends on if they want another NorCal school and what they think is the right number of conference members. I’m glad we weren’t mentioned on the WAC teleconference. At this point it would be a reckless and completely idiotic and a costly move. IMO it would completely destroy the athletic department.

I doubt UCSD will apply. They would have to dump a lot into their athletic budget to make the move to D-1. Their students were in heavy protest over last year’s tuition increase and God knows what those loonies in La Jolla would do if the administration demanded an additional $100 per student per quarter to make the move. It’s just not an athletic friendly campus and academia would not risk anything cutting into their research budgets. Plus the San Diego sports market is saturated enough with the Padres, Chargers, SDSU, and USD for anyone to give two shits about the mighty UCSD Tritons. If they think the BW will draw the casual fan, they are more out of touch with reality than soon to be Gov Brown.

My guess is it’s SJSU who has requested BW membership. They are completely fvcked with the pending WAC extinction when FSU, Nevada, Boise State, and Hawaii leave. I also think they will pull the plug on their football program; the WAC disbanding is a perfect excuse for them to do so. Their football program has been completely irrelevant for the past decade, I doubt many non SJSU alums would even notice if they stopped fielding a football team.

I find it hard to believe that Boise State would lobby the MWC on behalf of Idaho. They did that once to get them into the WAC and it did them no good. I doubt they make that costly mistake again. Plus Boise State holds all the chips. With the money they will make for their BCS Bowl bid this season (remember, because they left the WAC on time, they don’t get any WAC shared revenue but get to keep all bowl money to themselves) they probably won’t need to give in to any instate political demands. BSU is the only relevant program in the state of Idaho, the MWC has no need for their instate rival.

Utah State is in a weird position. They dropped the ball and missed the bus when they were stupid enough to think the WAC members would stay committed to the conference. They are at the complete mercy of the MWC. IF TCU bolts for the Big East, they just might get lucky and get an invite. That pretty much might be their only hope. It definitely sucks to be them. They do have geography in their favor as well as decent facilities (from what I’ve heard at least). Plus they could make the claim that they can somehow allow the MWC to keep a presence in the SLC TV market (tough sell IMO).

Nobody cares about NM State so I don’t need to speculate on their problems.

The Hornets have plenty to add to the Big West. We would be pretty competitive across the board. Baseball needs work but looking at what the new coach was able to do in one recruiting class, it's obvious this guy knows what he is doing. Katz also will need to land more wins on the court. We would do no worse than middle of the pack imo.

I do too think Sac would be a great addition to the Big West! If the WAC falls through, I'd love to have you, SJSU, and Hawaii added!

But don't you think Sac might be contacted by Benson next? Green Cookie Monster mentioned you guys don't have the facilities, but it seemed that you at least have the capacity for football and that's what Benson was in dire need of most? Were the other facilities, like the basketball arena, getting any steam or funding?

Welcome to the board :)

The facilities argument is a good one, especially with regard to the Hornets Nest. We need a new "arena" or we need to retrofit the existing facility and expand it. The Nest only seats 1,200, hardly a WAC caliber venue.

Welcome GA09.

My theory was the Hornets could “claim” to use Arco for basketball to appease the WAC. Hornet Stadium already seats 20k so minor improvements could be done to make it “FBS worthy”. Nevada’s stadium is a perfect example of a half assed way Hornet Stadium could be made “FBS worthy.” Of course my “pro-WAC” attitude is gone now that most of the schools that made it appealing (Fresno State, Nevada) for regional matchups are going to the MWC. The WAC is a lost cause. With the BSC allowing football only membership, Sac State should shoot for the same deal ucd and cal poly has and seek Big West membership. It makes the most sense in this economic climate.

All of a sudden weare the popular kids. The WAC message board is full of posts talking about how we are the perfect fit. Funny how rejection does that.

The new WAC is just not that appealing. throw in Poly, UCD and Portland State and maybe we start to get a little interested.

 Boy those WAC fans sure are desperate. They are completely fvcked. No way in hell anyone joins the WAC with the shape they are in. My favorite is the that some of them think Benson is actually doing a good job when it is clear he is the reason they are in this mess to begin with.

I don't have much to add, but I do sometimes wonder how it would be like for Poly, Sac State, and UC Davis to be in the same FBS conference in two years. Instead of us and Poly going to the Big Sky, the 3 of us went to the WAC. Completely unrealistic, but fun to think about.

I agree. It would be a way to keep Hawaii in the WAC. Neither of the 3 schools are positioned to make a move to FBS.
