Hawaii vs. WSU

I watched the Hawaii vs. WSU game. Hawaii really had it cranked up and going. I wish PSU could better match Hawaii's offensive efficiency. One noticeable thing about Hawaii is the running game and the running back. Hawaii uses more of a tailback style runner instead of a fullback. Much more effective. They also have Connor Kavanaugh type QB who they use quite often in a "wildcat" formation that he'll run out of. They also lined him up with the other QB. Imagine Hubel and Kavanaugh in the backfield at the same time. I wonder if JG and Craft ever watch Hawaii tapes.

As much as it hurts me to see WSU go under against a non-BCS opponent, there is a lot for us to learn from Hawaii. If you look at the stats from that game, you'll find that the Warriors' game is by no means perfect elegance: 2-8 3rd down conversions, 4 turnovers, 12 penalties for 120 (!!) yards. But what they have is a brutal passing game and solid rushing. I hope we'll get there this year.

Another learning opportunity will be next Saturday when June Jones' SMU is playing WSU in Pullman.

Hawaii probably would have had another TD or 2 without the turnovers. I really like the innovations that Hawaii has done with the R&S. I just hope Jerry and Jim Craft are watching.

I doubt that our team, with all the freshmen, can handle that many innovations yet. It's all they can do to remember the basic plays. Guess we'll see at Montana whether or not JG has been watching Hawaii. I'm more interested in seeing whether or not Brown and Duyndam are consistent, whether or not we can catch a kicked ball, and whether or not we can move the ball down at the five yard line. That will say a lot about where we're going this year, win or lose at Montana. It's a little early to talk about Hawaiian innovations.

Didn't really see many innovations. The quality of the receiving corps at Hawaii versus PSU is miles apart. This has been a painful process to witness.
