Portland State has posted a notice for applications for its vacant head football coaching position on the university website.
"We posted it last week," PSU athletic director Mark Rountree said Wednesday. "We'll accept resumes to get a diverse pool of candidates, and then we'll move forward to do the interviews."
Colleges in the state of Oregon must follow the guidelines set forth by the "Rooney Rule," which requires them to interview a minority candidate for every open head coaching position.
The position most be posted for a minimum of five days.
"We don't have a time line on when interviews will begin," Rountree said, "but I want to do it as soon as possible."
Bruce Barnum, offensive coordinator under head coach Nigel Burton the previous five years, has been serving as Portland State's interim head coach. The Vikings, who upset Washington State in their season opener, are 2-0 and ranked 19th in the FCS ranks.
Rountree said the number of candidates who will be interviewed "depends on the size and quality of the pool. If it's a small pool, we might interview just two."
In any case, Rountree said, "Bruce will definitely be one of our candidates, and a very strong candidate."
Barnum said he has not spent much time thinking about the job posting.
"I have a team to coach," he said. "That's the only thing I'm focusing on right now."
