Helmet Logo Idea: Infusing Tradition

Mouse Davis' greatness was using the Run-n-Shoot as a vehicle to offensively waylay some opponents while remaining competitive with others. If only Mouse Davis had had a Defensive Coordinator as good as his offensive assaults were. He would have certainly won I-AA championship after championship. His was also the era when Portland State was developing football players to the NFL on a regular basis.

We got to get ourselves back to the garden.

We need to infuse into Portland State Tradition a distinctive reminder of his resplendent era. During Mouse's run at Civic Stadium, PSU emulated the Crimson Tide of Alabama by having the player's number on the side of their helmets. And that is exactly what is missing from Portland State Tradition and what is creating a disconnect between Mouse's era and the current era.

Alabama is certainly not able to trademark player numbers on the helmet, so there is nothing to prevent PSU. To me, there is a sense of grittiness about a football player's number on his helmet. Look to the Pittsburgh Steelers epitomizing this kind of gritty imagery. Player numbers on the helmet say "I have a job to do." And I think there becomes a more blue-collar "get-'er=done" accountability approach to execution.

When you look at the Viking helmet logo, there is an ample empty-space in the "southwest" part of the image to place the player number. This would give the image a more balanced look overall; that is, a look of completed stability and, most importantly, retention of a bold remnant of valid PSU Viking identity that should never have been abandoned. Imagine the player number filling that space---the individual player's number and the Viking logo image synergizing energy with one another. This is a significant means by which to have the winning symbolism of Mouse's era infused into the modern era, symbolism being powerful imagery.

Simple but powerful imagery retaining the validity of the Vikings' winning tradition. Simple, meaningful and connected. For the football field 50-yard line and basketball arena center court, the number representing PSU's anniversary year since 1946 (this year being 64) can be used, or even the university logo. Whatever happens to bring the greatest "emotional return-on-investment." Go Viks!!
