Here We Go Again...UNI Post-Game reflections

Gabrud or Hennessey? Even though I was all in with Hennessey up until the wsu game, I was relieved when Gabrud kicked ass and things seemed settled. Now Gabrud shits down his leg, and Hennessey comes in and goes 21-29 for 226 and 3 TDs.

Sometimes I wish we just had one good QB and that's that  :?

I'd be surprised if Gage doesn't start against NAU, but who knows. He obviously adds the mobility dimension that RH or West don't necessarily have. He's also pretty darn accurate...just had a bad game. We should remember this was only his third start.

Might as well make this the post game reflections thread.

Gage Gubrud is definitely our man. No question. The only reason that RH succeeded tonight is that he has a stronger arm and puts a faster spiral through the air. His balls were able to cut through the wind much better than Gage's. Otherwise, Gage has mobility, decision making, and is able to float the deep ball better. Good thing we had RH to bail us out from that wind though. Yikes!

Tough call.. the good news is both kids can play at a high level, so there probably isn't a wrong answer.

For my money though, I'd stick with Gubrud. He was off today, but he's looked damn good before that. He also gives us mobility, and that's awfully beneficial because we don't run the ball too well.

Those guys sucked.

Sure glad our real team showed up in the second half.

I swear, watching Eastern games ages me about 5 years every Saturday. At this rate, I'll be about 115 by the end of the season.

It was like he took personal offense to how badly we looked in the first half. He came out like a nuclear warhead after halftime and took over the game. VERY impressive performance on his part...

I wouldn't say it was a great defensive performance based on the whole body of evidence, but when they needed to get it together in the second half, they found a way.

Also, big credit to our defensive staff for (finally) taking away the line of scrimmage and forcing UNI to try and go over the top.

Truly a sign of a great coaching staff when we always seem to dominate the second half.

Zamora was on fire. Definitely deserves the game ball tonight.

I think it was good for GG to sit but I don't think there's any controversy. Gage is the guy until he proves otherwise. If he struggles again it's good to know that RH can step in at any time and take over and push Gage to be better.

I'm glad for the win and looking forward to playing some teams that we should be able to beat a little more decisively. We could be 0-3 or 3-0 just as easily as 2-1 right now.

That was one of the most disappointing first halves I've seen, and one of the most exciting 2nd halves I've seen. Thought the Defense has shown flashes of play that could really take this team far if they can put it together consistently.

Glad to see a team where the right players are brought in to get the win. There is no doubt bringing Hennessey in was the right decision. I'm sure Baldwin has created a culture where everyone needs to be ready to selflessly contribute. I think Kupp's humility really sets a tone that carries through this team to others as well. Just glad not to see big egos coming into play. Gubrud looked totally fine on the sidelines.

Love the guts of Baldwin. Someday, he is going to be snatched up, and deservedly so. I just hope it takes long enough to bring EWU another NC or two, or three. This young team could be a force for several years!

And please, someone capture some highlights of this game and post to youtube!

I was impressed with the defense. YES the defense!! It was a little porous at times but it appeared adjustments and key reads made huge differences in the second half, especially the 4th qtr. This is a VERY good offense and by the games end we pretty well shut them down.
2-1 at this point in what was called a killer schedule places us in great position for the rest of the season.
Go Eagles

Completely agree. This team has depth and we've improved each game. Now it's Big Sky time. Great crowd yesterday, Eagle Nation is growing and our next two home games are Hall of Fame Day and the Believe campaign to fight cancer followed by Homecoming October 8. Bye week, off to Bozeman then the Griz visit. Love this schedule.

The defense won this game and hats off to them. We really seem to be better up the middle even with missing Sommer. We still have issues defending the run on the edge at times and it seems like that's where both NDSU and UNI wanted to attack us. But I also love the aggressive play calling re: blitzes. Notice that's what NDSU did to Iowa yesterday. They were willing to take some chances and bring extra pressure.

The fake shouldn't have surprised me as I was telling my son we had it first down in that series that beau does not want to kick this ball even from the 20. Only three plays later with a sinking feeling of maybe 35% chance to make that 40 yarder into the win I had completely forgotten my comment.

With all the goofy calls, kickoff return, changing QB's and fake, that's in the top 5 of all time most entertaining games to watch. What a circus!

Did anyone else find it really strange that UNI would not get out of man to man coverage as we continued to throw the slant 5 to 6 times to get down the field on that final drive? Really weird.

From the UNI fan forum: After the game most of the comments were criticisms of the coach and wanting him fired. Surprise?
The comment from one fan: UNI was up 24-7 at the half. EWU adapted to the environment, UNI failed to adapt AGAIN.

The game...what a game. UNI is good.

At half I was walking around the stadium breathing in the environment thinking how fortunate it was to be at the game on this day. Despite being behind and EWU yet to show up I had a feeling of serenity. It felt so similar to '10 and the many games where we were behind only to find victory. I really felt this team would come back and make it a game in a fashion just like the championship game vs Delaware.

* Eastern finished with 403 yards of offense, but held Northern Iowa to 353. It was Eastern's best defensive performance since it limited Montana to 347 in a 37-20 win over the Grizzlies in the FCS Playoffs on Dec. 6, 2014.
**A verrrry good sign.

Our offense and coaching is good.

Things look and feel good and exciting days are ahead. A sense of kalm has taken hold and my faith restored.

We had the leadership of Tyler Jolly and JC Sherrit. This season Miquiyah Zamora is leading by example.
In the UNI game he just took over in the second half and made the entire defense look outstanding.
