Here's What I think...

believe it or not, I think we keep Downing. I know, I'll probably get my ass kicked here reall soon, but I honestly think he should stay. I like a lot of the young players he's brought in.

I do however think some the staff needs to change. I don't know who, but it's obvious we need better assistants. The problem is, we just don't have the money to get good coaches in here.

Also, we need to get bigger and stronger. I don't know if it's the lack of facilities like a nicer weight room or maybe it's the strength coach, etc. Darnell mentioned one time how the offensive and defensive linemen are just not that strong compared to the rest of the conference and I think he's dead on. We have a bad o-line and a defensive line that can't get pressure on the qb. If we can't build a nicer facility, the players will just have to suck it up and lift old school.

Bottom line: I don't want to start over with this coaching process. Let's see what Downing can do with his full amount of scholies and maybe some nicer facilities to help recruit. Get better assistants, etc., and I think we're on the right track.

The young players do have potential and have looked good but Downing play calling is horrible. In yesterdays game its late in the fourth quarter on EWU 10 yard line and Downing kicks a field goal. What is the reason to kick a field goal what do we have to lose another game? Also in the second half down by 8, 4th and 1 on EWU like 47 yard line Downing chooses to punt. He shows no will to win and needs to go buy a coaching for dummies book from Barnes and Noble. I see him around school a lot maybe I will buy him a book. He doesn't know how to utilize his players to their abilities, the only job for him at UNC is special teams. Beardown what is your biggest worry with starting over?

The hole in the theory though is that the team now is quite a bit worse than the teams in the mid/late 90's and early 2000's, so somehow back then we were able to recruit bigger, stronger, and faster guys with less scholarships than we can now... So I think the program has regressed and that has nothing to do with funding and the weight room.

I would agree with Beardown on almost, if not all, points. No one can truely build a program from the ground up in D1AA in 3 years. Downing has done a good job with recruiting, his players have been good in the classroom. I'd also agree that a new offensive play-caller that is agressive and doesn't just dink and the dunkt the ball down the field is needed.

The most important thing is invelstment in athletic infrastructure. UNC is way behind most other BSC schools in wt. room, meals etc. I think they should tell him, you've had time to establish your base of the program, now in 2009 you need to finish 6th or better in the Big Sky. I'm not interested in starting over when i can see 5 + wins around the corner.

We went from a BAD DII team to the best D1AA conference in America - it's goint to take some time to get there, but I think that we're making progress.

It's hard to compare now to back then. We weren't going through a transition. Also, I think even recruiting has changed in the past 10 years too. The facility arms race even trickles down to this level. We've made strides in that department, but we've still got a long ways to go to compete with Montana, Weber, MSU, etc.

Our the guys from the 90's better than the guys we have now or is it our FCS competition that's just better? It could be that the team we have now could beat a 1998 UNC Bears team, they just can't compete with today's FCS teams.

We were not a bad D2 team. We were a very good D2 team. We went to the playoffs in our last year of full D2 play. I remember going to games and getting bored not because we were getting killed but because we were kicking so much tail.

My thoughts on Dowining vary from day to day. Some days I think we should can him and start over. No coach can do worse than he has done. I have not seen anything to make me beleive that he can take us into the top half of the conference.

Other days however I feel that he has improved each year and maybe he just needs more time. I think he has recruited some strong players. Talent wise I do not think we are 8/9th in the conference. I do not think Downing is getting the most from his players. Maybe changing the assistants will change the playcalling.

What's all this talk about starting over if we get a new coach? What do we have to start over? As far as I'm concerned we haven't gotten off the ground, there isn't much to start over with. I feel Downing has had ample time to get something going, ya the start of this season looked good, but now its back to the same ole BS. All you have to do is watch them once, and you'll see it, and I think this last game showed how bad this coaching staff is. Playing that conservative when you're down, as someone stated earlier 4th and 1 and you don't go for it, why not go for it? What do you have to lose? You're not playing for anything? Kicking field goals when you're down big? Seriously. I wonder who runs things there, I can't imagine what the practices are like. Not to mention they had something like 10 penalties, what does that show you? NO DISCIPLINE, which can translate into no coaching. If they don't get rid of Downing they need to make some serious changes with the coaching staff, but I have a feeling that Downing is going to get to stay for some reason.

I started going to UNC games (everygame) in 2005 and yes we were a bad DII team then, I don't care what year we were in the transition + we we're playing some poor teams, DII teams included and getting beat. I'll never forget the 1st time we lined up at home against a BSC team as a member of the conference....Idaho State's QB was bigger than our D-line. Things have changed considerably since then.

If they clean house, who is going to donate the money to pay all the coches through the end of their contracts, this isn't the SEC where some fat=cat with cash will come in to buy people out. I don't see it happening this year.

I hear all this talk about how how we have improved, we have better players, Downing is a nice guy. You know what they say about that little white speck on on the top of chicken shit? It's still chicken shit. Enough is enough. I'm tired of chearing for a bunch of Care Bears. I have been planning on driving down to Portland to watch the Portland State game, but I won't waste my money. Same thing has happened at Washington. Nice coach, players coach, brought in quality kids, good citizens, and NO WINS! Willingham got canned just like Downing should. It's all about the wins. And yes, we have tradition. Not a long tradition, but we have more Back to Back National Championships than most Schools in the country. I know because I drove my ass all the way to Alabama to see the games. I remember Pitt. State being the team nobody wanted to go against in the Playoffs. Well, after knocking them off the bannana, we became the team nobody wanted to play in the playoffs. FIRE DOWNING NOW! Bring in a coaching staff that are hard nosed, pissed off ass holes that are willing to bust some skulls. When the team starts winning, I'm sure the players will like them too.
