Hornet Football: Do People Ever Think You're Crazy?

I wanted to throw this topic out there...

Last week, my girlfriend and I were both amped up for opening weekend of college football. We were in Vegas sitting in the hotel the night before the game and I was cruising this site, SacRat's blog, hitting the Bee, reading UNLV press releases, the whole 9 yards when she looked at me and said, "I didn't know you cared so much about Sac State football, I mean, it's Sac State"... After I broke up with her on the spot (kidding), I sat for a second a really thought about it.

I told her that I was hooked from the first time I heard the drumline at the dorms on moving day. I was hooked even more when I attended my first Hornet tailgate, though small in scale, they pack a punch... good food, better people and friends.

I also admitted to her that yeah we have sucked... for a while, might still suck, but I didn't care. I think part of the reason that all of us here are so passionate about Hornet sports is the fact that we feel like we're getting in on the ground floor of something big. It's easy for someone to go to Florida or Michigan, or Texas and be an insta-fan. It takes true fandom to follow a team in FCS that struggles to find it's way..

But, I think the majority of us can agree that this program (and the bball program for that matter) are headed in the right direction, and I truly do hope we all can look back at this topic in 5 years when we open an Arena, or luxury boxes, and can say I remember when people thought I was crazy... Who's crazy now?

Ok, I will forget, permanently, that you wrote the 1st sentence of the third paragraph.

Excluding that remark, I hear you and know how you feel. We do what we do because we have HEART!!!!!!! And, that is all that it takes to be a good team and "Hornets fan." We cheer for our team because it is our team. We went to CSUS or SAC State, not CAL or Stanford.

I even make my Mrs., who is a faggie, at least not wear blue on game day. Matter of fact, she wasn't allowed in the house last Causeway when I had all my Hornet buddies over. (She understands; another reasons why I married her.)

I am with you all the way. Go Hornets!!!!!!

I totally understand you--there are more of us out there than you think. I've been hooked since my dad took me as a kid to games at Hornet Field, back when it held 2K and we were in DII.

The payoff when the team gets good will be unbelievable. The only thing I can give you as an example are those few Kings fans that were true fans in the 80's and 90's when the team was the laughingstock of the NBA, got made fun of by Warriors and Lakers fans, then finally saw success this decade. It was orgasmic...all of a sudden you weren't a dork for talking about your team.

I have been going to Hornet football since I was 5 in the early 1980's...been one through and through.

I am Hornet born and Hornet bred and when I die, I'll be Hornet dead!!

Yeah I get the same thing from my girlfriend as well. But I make her deal with it one way or another. ;) As an alumnus, I’ll always support the school and the athletics no matter what. I think things are on the up swing from what I keep hearing. There seems to be a good support for new facilities (both academic and athletic) since Prez Gonzalez came on board, and it is obvious that the visibility of the school has been a priority. Get the arena built for the basketball team and I think the rest of the pieces will fall into place.

anyone ever remember back in the 60's and 70's when there was the "49'er Faithful"?

it was that group of fans who knew the niners sucked (even though they had gene washington and john brodie), and also had the cajones to sit through the miserable weather Candlestick offered (and still does at times), until the last down played. (this dedication to a team was also expressed in the musical Damn Yankees with the song "Ya gotta have Hearrrrrtttt") ok, i digress.

college football, to some degree, still offers some sense of innocence compared to the pro ranks. my wife's family is a Cal family (a professor dad with several Cal degrees by offspring), and the color red (evil Stanford) is not allowed in the house, football season or not.

but you're right kadeezy, it's the sum package of the band, the tailgaiting, (sneaking in a few brews), enjoying a fall football game, and hoping for a glimmer of improvement, and maybe someday a shot at the title.

i live in the midwest and tell people i have been following Sac State because i have a friend who plays on the team. they say "Sacramento?" (yeah, it's the friggin' capital of California numbnuts, gold rush, namesake of the 49'ers?!). meanwhile they go onto tell me they follow university of northern iowa (?), slipperyrock tech or some other bumfork team. their passion for their teams lies in the fact there is no other game in town except cowtipping.

whereas the Bay Area is both blessed and cursed. it is a mature sports market with many venues to choose from, both pro and collegiate. and many collegiate programs have time and tradition on their side, like Cal and Stanford. Sac is just a little behind on that curve, but it's a growing tradition. and as that famous felon Martha says, 'that's a good thing.'

I'm a Hornet Fan 100%, but I'm a realist, and I know that next year's team will be the true test as to whether Sperbeck has succeded in turning this ship around... :D

My "Mrs." is a UOP (B.S.) USC (P.H.D.) grad and I never hear the end of UOP Basketball this, USC Football that...

All I have to do is bring up Michael Olawakandi and the fact that Sac State can't afford to pay their players as much as USC and that quites her... for a minute, or two.

One thing you forgot, Kadeezy. USC Football is STILL UOP Football. Head Coach Pete Carroll played safety and started in coaching at UOP.

Yep they sure do. I was at CSUS in the 80's (most of it in fact) and was there for all the great hornet teams- got to know Tony Trosin through a mutual friend, but have always been a fan. Moved to Oklahoma in the 90's and got little or no info on the program, moved back in the late 90's. Yea, I catch grief, but for the Univ of Cow Dung coworkers, I like to rub in last years win-I can tell you with the right President and AD, we are turning the corner on our sports programs, but it does take time and the right coaches to get things going in the right direction. I saw when we hired the fella from Fresno, questioned it then. I am in the business world and one thing I see in that evironment is that assistants rarely make good head coaches. If a guy has been a career assistant- there is probably a good reason and no it is not because of lack of opportunity.

Peace.

People think I'm obsessed with Hornet sports, especially at my place of business. My cubicle walls are filled with Hornet green and gold and my cars are littered with decals and license plate frames, even my valve stems have the Hornet logo. My three year old even sports Sac State gear. :D

I work with a bunch of uc'ers and a few big ten'ers and always get crap about my "DII (their words not mine) team." They just like messing with me, they know I'm passionate about Sac State, and they respect that.

I'm not from California, although I call it my home now. I moved to Sacramento 8 years ago after meeting my wife, who was a student at Sac State, and fell in love with the city and the university. Sac State is where I met some of the best friends a guy could ever have, I wouldnt have traded my experience at the university for anything.

I don't understand why people think that Hornet fans are crazy, the Hornets are Sacramento's team, no matter what anyone says.

GO HORNETS!

I have been called crazy in my own state for liking the Wildcats, "Why would you like the Cats when there is the Utes, Cougars, and Aggies?" Personaly I hate Utah State, they and thier fans remind me of Montana, I cant stand the hype this state gets with BYU, I respect Utah but Thats it.

I've been A wildcat fan All my life, they are the hometown team.
