Hornets appear to be leading contender for Graves

From what I have been told, there is such a thing as a "Non Qualifer, Prop 48" which basically means that a student athlete does not qualify through standard NCAA rules but if a school allows such athlete to "Prop" they will be allowed to enter school and compete after sitting out one season. All of the Division 1 FBS conferences have banned the "Prop" but the Big Sky is one of the conferences that still allows it. I also understand that Eastern Washington, Portland State, Idaho State (During the good years), and Southern Utah are the only schools in the west currently practicing it. It frustrates me when Sac State is criticized for not recruiting Taiwan Jones (EWU Prop), Matt Nichols (EWU Prop), Anthony King (EWU Prop), Shaquille Hill (EWU Prop), Quincy Forte (EWU Prop). I have even been told that Cal Poly (Supposed Big Time Academic School) is being allowed this fortune with Marcus Paige-Allen from Sheldon High School, who the sac bee wrote a big article about Cal Poly beating Sac State on, is a prop and couldnt attend Sac State because of too high of academic standards! So much for Cal Poly being Harvard West, apparently they are just a CSU like us. My point is that we are all very critical and don't know the whole truth about local recruiting. Sac State is doing a good job and if the local players go to EWU, PSU, CP, or somewhere else and it seems fishy it may not be because they did not try. Lots of harsh critics that know nothing about the real deal.

You are correct EWU allows Prop 48 student athletes. You are also correct that Taiwan Jones entered as a Prop. There is in fact much more a student needs to accomplish than just sitting out a year. Many or maybe even most can't accomplish the requirements needed to comply. I am not sure about most of the names you mentioned, however you are incorrect about one of the biggest name on your list Matt Nichols. Nichols was a qualifier right out of high school and in fact has graduated. Sac State didn't contact him until he had visited and gave a verbal commitment to EWU. Mario Brown from Berkley is another true freshaman at Eastern who replaced an injured Taiwan at the end of the year. This kid looks like he could give us fitts for the next few years. The point is we are missing some talent from our area wether it sounds fishy to you or not.

Can't argue with that.

I think the local thing is a little overblown. The number one priority is to win, not have a team full of local kids. Some kids just want to go away to college, Fresno State constantly loses local kids to Nevada and other schools. Other times you may not make an offer to a kid because you rate someone else higher or the player may not fit your system. Based on what I've seen the only local kid we lost to an FCS program was Allen to Cal Poly. The others were lost to FBS teams (which should be expected) or kids Sac St didn't offer.

The current coaching staff signed a fair amount of local guys the last few years, and I'm sure it will continue in the future. But bottom line is they will be judged on wins and not the geography of their roster.[/quote]

I disagree. Winning with local kids is important. When I would see a dozen people sittings with Bucks parents, sitting behind a dozen or so of Mulitalo’s relatives I thought about how many tickets they sold. The bonus of Graves would have been when 400 new fans from Folsom were buying season tickets

My sentiments exactly. Plus we need to get as many locals as we can. The fan support would increase if a kids family is in town and can come to the game on saturday with some friends. We got 3 total locals in this class one was a long snapper. That is a testament to the perception that the local kids have about Sac State.

The ultimate proof is that they are losing talented local kids to rival FCS schools, several of which are out of state. If it was simply an FCS perception, these same kids wouldn't be committing to UCD, Cal Poly, PSU, EWU, etc. If the Hornets start winning consistently, they should be able to keep more of these kids in town and away from their rivals.

If our program is going to depend heavily on recruiting local kids for the sake of selling tickets, that means the marketing department/people need to get off their ass and get the most out of their marketing budget. It takes money to make money. Put up some “Hornet Football” billboards around the Sac area, get some radio commercials on the air (on stations people actually listen to), get a TV add up to run during some local news broadcasts, get Hilliard’s photo on some Sac Regional Transit buses and bus stops, run some full page advertisements/announcements in the Bee, get coaches and players out to hot spots (on and off campus) handing out Hornet football schedule posters, hit up businesses in the area and see if they will put a Hornet poster schedule on their windows.

These are things that can get done and that can inform a lot of people about Hornet athletics. A dedicated and well organized marketing campaign will increase attendance. I don’t know what kind of a marketing budget Hornet athletics is on but it only takes a few phone calls to see what advertisement opportunities they can afford. If all else fails, get a bunch of day laborers to stand at street corners whistling and slapping together/passing out pocket football schedules. (If anyone has been to Vegas, you know what I’m talking about.)

I have thought the same thing all along. Our Marketing dept does not do their job. If I were in charge of that dept. I would clean house and get some folks with some great ideas and a sense of urgency. Here is a great goal for their objectives- come up with marketing plans for every game and average 12,000 BIS (butts in seats) or LOSE YOUR JOB. Nothing like a little fire to get things moving.
