QB Jake Dunniway played in the Ottawa RedBlacks' first pre-season game SAT 25 MAY 24, a 31-22 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Not much, mind you. But he did play. He was the third quarterback in for Ottawa, and took the game-ending kneeldown. Stats-wise, Dunniway was 1-1-7 yards and had one carry for 8 yards (I guess CFL stat geeks don't count kneel-downs in the rushing stats). Dunniway was a DNP-CD for last night's 19-13 win over the Montreal Allouettes.

I don't know how many QBs Ottawa plans to keep, but given how long a CFL season is, and their experiences with QB injury last year, I would hope they keep three. The current depth chart is:

QB1 #18 Dustin Crum (Kent State) 6'3" 207 Age 25
QB2 #3 Dru Brown (OK State) 5'11" 191 Age 27
QB3 #16 Jake Dunniway (Sacramento State) 6'1" 211 Age 24

Also on the roster are #7 Tyrie Adams (W. Carolina) 6'2" 185 Age 27 and #8 Jeremiah Masoli 5'10" 215 Age 35. I suspect that Masoli has been held out of pre-season in the same fashion NFL teams do; if he's not hurt, he will jump immediately to QB1. Crum is a viable threat to Dunniway. I'm hoping that Brown and Adams are cut (unless they opt to keep four, though most teams don't do that). Adams has seen no action, either, and he's not a proven starter as Masoli is, so he's probably gone in the next cuts. The season starts this coming Thursday, though Ottawa has a bye in Week 1. First game for Ottawa is in Week 2, a THU 13 JUN 24 home game against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, formerly the mainstay of Hornet HoF RB Charles Roberts.

As of today, Jake's still on Ottawa's roster. However former Hornet QB Kevin Thomson was released by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. (It's still weird seeing his school listed as Washington, being how he didn't play a down for them.)

LBer Darnell Sankey had one tackle for the Montreal Alouettes during their first pre-season game and did not play in the second. Montreal did not list him among their cuts.

I thought MBT had retired after his attempt to return to the States, but he's been picked up by the Edmonton Elks and started in their Week B pre-season game. He was 17-25-190-1 INT with a long of 27 and lost four yards on one rush (a sack?). MBT did not play in the other game. He was listed as the starter on the Week B depth chart.

The UFL's Houston Roughnecks signed F/S Mister Harriel 21 MAY 24. He did not play last week, but Houston ends their regular season tomorrow at the Memphis Showboats on Fox. This will be Harriel's only chance barring a trade, since Houston is dead last in the USFL Division at 1-8 entering tomorrow.

The CFL season just got underway. Former Hornet QB Jake Dunniway (likely QB3) and his Ottawa RedBlacks start with a bye.

Montreal d. Winnipeg 27-12 THU 06 JUN 24. LBer Darnell Sankey logged 5 tackles and a fumble recovery.

No Hornets were involved in Calgary's 32-14 win over Hamilton Friday night.

Saskatchewan beat Edmonton 29-21 last night. QB McLeod Bethel-Thompson led the way for the Elks, going 33-42-336-2 TD-1 INT with a long of 52. MBT also picked up 6 yards on one carry. I suppose the breakdowns fit the pass-happy nature of the three-down CFL; the Elks' leading rusher only had 7 carries for 23 yards. Backup QB Dakota Prukop (MT State/Oregon) played in some capacity, but didn't record a pass, though he did match MBT with six yards on one carry. MBT did spread the ball around quite a bit, hitting 8 different receivers, five of which had five or more receptions. It was a horrible fourth quarter that did Edmonton in, as the Elks missed a FG, and gave up fumbles by a running deep in Elks' territory and a strip-sack, both of which were converted into Rough Rider touchdowns. MBT was picked with less than a minute left before he got another chance after a Saskatchewan fumble with 18 seconds left. Two passes got EDM from their own 51 yard line to the SSK 41, where a Hail Mary fell incomplete at the SSK 2 as the clock ran out. Three touchdowns to a field goal in the fourth quarter is not a good way to win. EDM was up 18-8 after three. (SSK had a TD and a rouge at that point.)

Almost forgot.

WR Cole Hikutini was targeted four times, catching three for 15 yards with a long of 8 in the Michigan Panthers' 31-18 loss to the Birmingham Stallions in the USFL Division Championship. Hikutini also recorded a tackle. The Stallions went on a 28-0 run for the win after QB Matt Corral replaced an ineffective Adrian Martinez. Birmingham will face the winner of today's St. Louis Battlehawks-San Antonio Brahmas XFL Division Championship at 1600 PDT today on Fox.

The Montreal Alouettes and MLBer Darnell Sankey win the first Hornet Bowl of the year 23-20 over QB McLeod Bethel-Thompson and the Edmonton Elks Friday night.

8 tackles and a sack for one widely acclaimed to be the best LBer in the CFL.

MBT was 28-42-300-2 INT with a long of only 29. He added 8 yards on one carry.

As QB3, Dunniway did not play in Thursday night's 23-19 Ottawa win over Winnipeg.

Thank you for the news, BSCfan. Per cfl.ca, that news didn't become official until yesterday. I guess they have something of a delay in posting to the transaction wire.

Apparently, Dunniway has been replaced by Tyrie Adams from W. Carolina. No word on anyone picking Dunniway up yet.
