Hornets vs. Southern Oregon Thread

Might as well start it. Last night, Humboldt had to come from behind to beat SOU 15-14.

Seriously, if we don't beat them like 58-0, I would feel this as a letdown from yesterday.

Go Hornets....Sting the Raiders!

We should probably differentiate here between the CAPABILITY of running up a 60-0 score and actually doing so. I doubt that Sperbeck would stick it to SOU like that even if the Hornets are capable of it. Running up the score is not a nice thing to do, and it tends to come back to bite you in the rear sooner or later.

Win big, yes, But we'll likely start playing the scrubs way early not only to prevent the starters from getting hurt, but to give said scrubs valuable real-game experience to guard against throwing an unblooded backup in against conference foes late in the season in the event of a catastrauphic injury to a starter.

I'm looking at something more along the lines of the Humboldt score. If it's higher because our scrubs are better than their starters, then so be it. But I don't want our starters in during the 4th just to vote-grab.

I don't think we'll run up the score, its just I think we will score that much with even the 2nd and 3rd stringers in the ballgame. You don't the expect the 2nd and 3rd string guys to go full bore? To get them that experience? Especially if pressed into action against the likes of EWU and UM?

Has anyone heard anything regarding Hilliard's injury? The Bee mentioned on Sunday that it was a shoulder separation, but that's all I've seen on it.

According to gamenotes, Hilliard has not been ruled out for Saturday's game. He will probably play sparingly to nurse it for conference.

Are they playing the "play sparingly" card to keep Hilliard from being rusty for Homecoming? My first instinct would be to completely hold him out of the SOU game on the theory that he probably won't be needed to win.

I agree SH, although it wouldn't be much of a surprise to see him play a few downs. Of course, I don't know much about shoulder separations either.

I hope and think that we will win this game fairly easily. One thing that I do know for sure is that my throat will be soar for three day's again, just like after the home opener.

Hornets 49, Raiders 10

Super Hornet - You hit the nail on the head. They absolutely do not need Hilliard to win this game. Rest him (even if it's only a broken finger nail) we need him healthy for the Big Sky if we're to make a run at it. 2 wins 1 close loss to a BCS team sounds good doesn’t it. Does anyone know if there are there any injuries, even minor ones on "D"?

I agree.... Rest that shoulder and get him ready for the long haul to the playoff's. From what I seen in the Humbolt game I think that Croxdale could slide right in this weekend and make an impact, I like the way he runs the ball. Share the ball in the next few games and really get a feel for the level of players we have, it will only help going down the playoff road.

Homecoming is on Sept. 27 vs. PSU. We have Weber at home on Sept. 20.

You're right as per usual, SHA. I don't know why I thought Weber was homecoming, other than that Weber is closer to the calibre of team that one would expect for HC than PSU is.

I'd like to know who made this schedule. Placing "homecoming" at the tail end of a three-week homestand is absolutely ludicrous. Originally, it was designed to come after a stretch of road games, usually with a patsie foe because it's SUPPOSED to be a win. And who the cr@p scheduled #1 Montana as homecoming a few years ago? That was REALLY dumb.

Back on topic: unless Hilliard improves earlier, we could probably get away with holding him out until the Skydome trip. I consider SOU and Weber to be definite wins and PSU to be a probable (although not definite) win, even without him. NAU is a bit stiffer competition, so Hilliard had better be back by then.

BBQ U is not a definite win. They have an outstanding defense.

Yes their "D" is good, but they always seem to struggle here, just like we do at their place.

Well, it wasn't pretty, but will take the win. The secondary is going to have to do a better job with the receivers or it could be a long game against Weber. Though, I don't think Weber runs the spread like we saw yesterday. I thought on defense we played down to SOU's level. Any rate, lets learn from yesterday and take it to the Wildcats next week.

Sac Rat, I thought you pretty much summed it on your blog. Nice job getting the video of SOU's Leon Lett play on YouTube.

Did anyone see the game? I saw some stats last night or this morning that showed that we had well over 500 yards total offense, the most since the ISU game a few years ago, but it doesn't even translate to 30 points?

I'll take the W. But I'd really like to know if SOU is really that much better on D than Humboldt.

It will be a long day if the defensive backs play like this against Weber. The O line did not do a good job of picking up the blitz either, and that is something that will need to be worked on this week. Run blocking was good, Wilkens and Crox got a lot of their yards just by being quick and having good vision. Crox can play. He lowered his shoulder into linebackers a couple of times and moved them backwards. The kid can block, too.

The run defense was good, but the Big Sky is not known as a running group of ball clubs. We are either going to have to have a better pass rush or blitz, or drop another d-back into the mix. What happened Saturday against the pass was not what you want to see with league games coming up. MBT did a decent job and got good game experience.

I hope all the guys that were out this week make it back for next week.

I think the DB's only turned around once AFAIK against SOU. You can be sure Sperbeck will highlight that out this week at practice.....
