Hornets vs. Weber

Might as well start a thread on the game. It'll be interesting since UNC nearly stole one in Ogden. A lot of WSU fans are saying on their site that it was an embarrassing game for the Wildcats.

How do we think this one is going to play out?

It was, 6-turnovers, our defense was lackadasical (spelling?) lights went out for fireworks before the game was even over, but we did have a decent crowd and our offense moved the ball rather well despite the to's.

This is going to be a big game, going to find out alot about both our teams.

I agree. Also at opening kickoff the crowd looked sparse, but by the latter parts of the 1st quarter, the home side seemed to have a good crowd. I watched the first quarter and neither team looked impressive. It was just sloppy. It sounds like that's how the rest of the game went.

This week will answer a lot of questions for both teams.

Weber have any injuries?
No significant injuries that I've heard of.

I think this will be a close game and could go either way. Sac has been getting better and Weber is a very young team. Something like 75% of the team are underclassmen.

Here's to looking forward to a good game and another Hornet win :D

How is Bo Bolen? I thought I saw him get broke in half, late in the game...

I think he just go the wind knocked out of him, He got up and ran the ball 2 plays later, he'll be playing, although I think Weber needs to start Josh Booker, he has been an electrifying back, We need to let him play more.

Preview

This is a huge game for both teams. This game will most likely indicate how each team will do this season. It’s time for the Hornets to step up and prove that this program is in fact progressing. The Hornets have a tough few weeks ahead so this home game will be even more crucial for the Hornets to get off on the right foot in BSC play.

Offense:
WSU has a potent offense. I was hoping with their key players that graduated last season, the Wildcats would be struggling more, but that has not been the case. I watched much of their game at Boston College and the first quarter of their win against UNC and Higgins looks to be his old self. Last week he went 33 of 54 for 340 yards with 4 TD’s and no INT’s. Add that to the 223 rushing yards on 45 tries (Bolen and Booker each had 90 yards each) and this offense looks like it can beat you two ways. They also have a big RB in Tafuna who will be used in short yardage situations and their power running game. The UNC game went 4 overtimes so the stats may be a little inflated, but regardless this team can move the ball.

The Hornet defense needs to be aggressive and get to Higgins. In fact, the game will be determined by this. If the Hornets drop into coverage and the front 4 can’t get pressure, Higgins will shred the secondary. WSU’s OL only allowed 2 sacks last week so it appears that they are a capable group. (BC played a very conservative defensive scheme and dropped back into zone coverage and Higgins moved the ball at will.) The Hornets will have to blitz often and from everywhere and do anything to get to Higgins.

Defense:
Their defense has been a polar opposite of the offense so far. Their defense allowed UNC to rack up 208 yards on 54 carries and gave up 233 yards through the air. Look for Sperbeck to exploit this deficiency against the run with a heavy dose of Hilliard between the tackles and hopefully McCowan for that speed and maneuverability on the ends. A lot will depend on the Hornet OL. If they can be dominant, it will allow the Hornets to control the tempo via an established run game and most importantly keep Higgins on the bench. The run game will need to be successful enough to draw that 8th man into the box so that Fleming can take to the air and pick up some gains through the air. This will be a true test of the capability of the Hornet run game.

Special Teams:
I am not sure how well the WSU special teams are but the Hornet kickoff coverage needs to pick it up. The Hornet coverage has steadily improved going back to the tail end of last season and with Toone gone, they should be able to contain the WSU returners and not give up any big returns. Our punting and place kicking should be solid again and these aspects of the game will be crucial for the Hornets to win this one.

Intangibles:
WSU had 6 turnovers against UNC. SIX! If they make this many mistakes this week there is no excuse for the Hornets not winning it. WSU was also penalized 13 times for 95 yards compared to 6 for 40 yards by the Hornets last week. If they play another sloppy game it will only help the Hornets. Higgins in the past has thrown the pick when under duress, so to beat a dead horse, getting pressure on Higgins will be crucial.

I am sticking with my preseason pick of a Hornet win for this one. If this program truly is on the rise and is better than a middle of the road team, it needs to be proved this week. This should be a good game and hopefully more than 7,800 shows up to see it. My “out of the ass” score prediction is 34-27 Hornets. (I’m terrible at score predictions so I just kind of threw out some numbers.)

GO HORNETS!!!

Our secondary is completely suspect, if Higgins is allowed to have a picnic in the pocket we lose. Like you said, SD, we need a run controlled time consuming gameplan to keep Higgins on the bench and when he is on the field scrambling for his life.

Any remote chance Shaw will be back, would be nice to have his ability back on the field.

Our offensive line is not capable of protecting our qb.Will not be successfull until we make some changes.
That's great news for Weber because our D Line is very young and inexperienced and has not looked good at all this year.

Bolen returns the kickoffs (as he did last year) and can be very dangerous. Weber has had no punt returns on the year so that's still an unknown. But you can't replace a Tim Toone.

Don't expect to see six turnovers from the Wildcats again. Coach Mac was very upset with this because winning the turnover battle was a major focus for this team going into the season. Certainly the team will be working extra hard on this throughout the week and on Saturday.

Higgins' big focus this year is at not taking careless chances or being reckless with his passes. To his own admission, he got over confident last year and thought he was better than he was, causing him to throw way too many bad balls. He has been completely different this year. For the most part he's been throwing short and conservative. His only interception was a tipped ball against BC that probably should have been caught by the receiver. And Weber's WRs are good and deep. Watch out for Mike Phillips. IMO, he's the best WR in the conference this year.

Heavy dose of Hilliard, burn them with the pass, pressure on Higgins.

Hornets 38 Wildcats 28 No injuries!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, I pretty much nailed last weeks score and I'm feeling quite frisky this week...

Weber comes in with a 4OT Hangover...Reed, Hendershott, and Gordon all return with a bang...Fleming mans up...Hornets win BIG.

You've been smoking too much of that No Cal hippie lettuce if you honestly think that Sac beats Weber by 18, and hangs 42 on em.

Just trying to pay homage to my good friend SuperHornet, thought I'm sure he's predicting a 63-2 victory for SAC...

Pre-game thoughts:

1. Sperbeck is 1-2 in BSC openers (all at home) including a 32-27 loss to WSU in '08.
2. Injuries are significant for the Hornets - lost starting QB and most dynamic RB
3. Sperbeck is 0-3 vs. WSU
4. Under Sperbeck Hornets give up 29.5 points per game at home in the BSC
5. Under Sperbeck Hornes score 30.8 points per game at home in the BSC

So what does all of this mean - not much!

I expect a very close game into the 4th quarter, and a very high scoring game.

SAC 38
WSU 35

Hornet score late in the 4th to capture the win.

Thanks, Kadeezy.

No, if you'll look over at BigSkyFans or FCSFans, you'll see that I predicted 41-38 Hornets in OT. Weber is NOT Idaho State....
