The East Valley Tribune (Phoenix) has an interesting article which describes how current UCLA coach Ben Howland turned around the NAU program...

After discovering he couldn’t attract elite high school talent or big-city types to Flagstaff, Howland went after small-town players who could do one thing well — shoot the basketball.

“What I decided was we were going to recruit kids from towns that wouldn’t have a problem living in a town of 30,000 people in the snow,” Howland said. “So we went to places like Hobbs, New Mexico, and Loveland, Colorado, and Snow Junior College in Ephraim, Utah.”

Adras, current NAU coach aka Baldy is doing a great job but Ben Howland did an incredible job in Flagstaff. Howland led them to 3 consecutive 21 win seasons.

Being the Weber State alum that Howland is I had the chance to meet him in Ogden last September. He is a really cool guy and of course a great coach. Below is the link to a video of him about his college and coaching career.

He also played bball at Weber.
