How Far Will We Drop in the Polls?

After a big win on a Saturday, anyone have a guess as to how far we will drop in the Media and Coaches Polls?

Last week, after a BSC win on the road the Hornets dropped in the rankings while two other BSC teams with byes (including Davis) moved up! :wtf:

Craig Haley was putting us tied at 10th with Kennesaw. Sam Herder put UCD at 6, us at 7 and EWU at 8. His rationale is Davis and Direction play this coming Saturday and we play Davis in 2 weeks. That should determine which team ends where.

Seems reasonable. First we better take care of business with an improving PSU team.

A good number of teams ahead of us lost yesterday. UNI lost and now has been defeated 4 times so I assume Sac State will at least move from #16 back to #15.

It’s not reasonable at all.

Both teams have 1-FCS loss. However UCD’s loss was to a conference foe that is 1-8.

If roles were reversed, you think the Hornets would be ranked ahead of UCD with that loss?

You’re right. It doesn’t matter in the grand scheme.

It’s just painfully clear those that cover FCS don’t really follow it closely. They just watch occasional highlights and review boxscores.

Which is how college football is covered by the media in general, but even worse so in the FCS.

I get what you’re saying, and in the end, you’re right. But polls matter in terms of recruiting, national visibility, program prestige, attendance/interest/coverage, team morale, etc.

I’m sure the players are aware of poll slights, and it probably is actually motivating to an extent. Wouldn’t hurt to have that extra chip going into PSU and Dungpile games and beyond. We saw how we played with our highest ranking every against Austin Peay last year. 😬

I saw that one guy had it "in the bag" a couple of weeks ago that we would win out except for Causeway. I was wondering about respective performance against common opponents, particularly in conference. It's almost a push, as we have done better against three common opponents, while Davis has done better against two. Before I call that anything close to a push, though, I think we might well want to factor in that Dixie State (us: 19-7, UCD: 60-27) was a long time ago for the both of us. The more recent common games for both of us, Sac has done better (Cal Poly: us: 41-9, UCD: 24-13; NAU: us: 44-0, UCD: 40-24). I think UCD's higher ranking stems from their hanging on from their pre-season ranking, not to mention their OOC scalp, which ALSO happened early; I'm fairly confident that if we take care of business against PSU, we'll ALSO do so against UCD. I see BOTH of us getting in, but we should be in a better position (seed or no seed), both because of recent performance AND because of H2H after Causeway.

We are #12 in the Media Poll and #18 in the Coaches Poll. The Coaches Poll is just wild this week - UCD up to #4, NDSU ahead of SDSU after they got whipped head to head Saturday.

Haley has posted his article about the latest STATS poll.

I hope everyone ahead of them loses and that UCD is the #1 team in the country when we roll in there in 12 days.

Whoever this clown is should have his media credentials pulled immediately.

Forget UCD, who has a terrible FCS loss, there’s literally no justification for ranking Montana ahead of Sac State right now. NONE.

UM and SAC have identical records but UM has TWO FCS losses with one of them being at home to the Hornets.

Again, if roles were reversed there’s zero chance he’d have SAC ahead of UM.

This poll is utter garbage. So are the media and coaches polls. Clueless.

I'm wondering what's up with the coaches voting in this poll. While Athlon and HERO (we're #7 in the HERO Poll) likely have us over-inflated, the STATS Poll is probably pretty accurate.

FWIW, I went and checked our games in common with UCD yesterday, expecting it to be about a push. It turns out that that kinda depends on how one defines a "push." It's about three to two in our favor, but the big difference is the Dixie State game (decidedly in UCD's favor), but that was WAY early for both schools, as was their low-level scalp. Rating recent games higher, we're decidedly better in common games than UCD at the present time, and that playoff predictor that had us winning up until a Causeway loss is bogus in my book. I think we're going to completely win out and get a 7 or 8 seed, or at least be somewhat close to that. I don't think UCD will be anywhere near a seed so long as the selectors stay ten miles away from the Coaches Poll, which seems to be overemphasizing Davis' early scalp and blowout of Dixie State.

I see much more of an argument for rating UCD ahead of the Hornets than there is for UM.

There’s literally no justification for the latter.

Craig Haley gets it right IMO. https://athlonsports.com/college-football/fcs-rankings-top-25-power-poll-following-week-10-2021

Better, but still wrong.

UCD’s loss to IDST puts them behind the Hornets. Our lone FCS loss is much better than theirs. Our best FCS win is better than theirs.

Lastly, their W over Tulsa isn’t so much better than SAC’s competitive loss to CAL. Neither FBS team is especially good (3-6 records). And while Tulsa had a close loss to Cincinnati, CAL had a close loss to Oregon.

The edge with regard to FBS opponents would surely go to UCD, but shouldn’t be anywhere close to overcompensating for their loss @IDST and the fact that they have a league loss and an FCS win nowhere close to beating UM on the road.

These ratings guys need to try harder.

Watched some of the UC Davis / Dixie game. It was close until Davis ran up the score later in the game against the Dixie team pieced together to play the game.

The Davis announcers felt bad for Dixie State as they shared that COVID protocols resulted in many key players for Dixie not allowed to make the trip to Davis.

So Sac State played the entire Dixie team in St. George and Davis played a fraction of the Dixie team in Davis.

Let's worry about PSU, they are coming looking for a scalp.

The UCFE game will be high intensity and it is all proven on the field.

That’s great that it gets proven on the field. But the discussion is about the here and now. Also, what if this was a team we didn’t get to play?

Not only that, proving it on the field sometimes still doesn’t tell these clowns anything. Some are still ranking UM above Sac State even though that matchup was already proven on the field.

Tell that to Michigan State too, who just beat their rival recently yet are still behind them in the CFP.

If TX A&M wins out and Bama loses to Georgia in the SEC championship, I’ll bet you whatever is left in Fort Knox that Bama is still ranked ahead of A&M when the final CFP rankings are released. It won’t matter that they both have two losses and A&M beat Bama on the field.

The clowns that run college football are among the most clueless and unqualified bunch around.

This whole discussion is meaningless and not worth having unless the Hornets beat PSU. Hornets probably won't even make the playoffs without one more win. Focus on PSU, the hell with the polls/seeds/playoffs discussions.
