just watched the fly by video posted on that site and I must sat that I am impressed. It will be years before Sac will have the support to upgrade the stadium like that. I think bball needs to get out of a hs gym first.

Wonder when Wanless and Gonzo are going to do something similar? I'm sure they've considered it or are considering it. On the other hand, the economy in California is very different from that of Montana, Californians may be suffering more so than people in Montana, especially in the Capitol Region.
 
I agree and there is a glimmer of hope that could things can still happen.

Destination 2010 is also, in all fairness, incomplete. Its original drawings included a new event center for concerts and sports, and a science complex slated to be built next to the Hornet Bookstore.
Gonzalez said the hurdles preventing completion were purely fiscal.

"With the economy the way it is, and the state budget the way it is, we don't have the capital yet," he said.
But there are still plans to complete those projects, Gonzalez said.

He said he will be unveiling his post-destination 2010 initiative this spring, which includes both projects.
"Destination 2010 was really the precursor to a much broader initiative that will take place over the next 10 to 20 years," he said.

Looking back at his seven-year project, at times in the face of disapproval, Gonzalez maintains that Destination 2010 brought a new sense of pride to campus.

I stumbled across this earlier in the week. It’s an article assessing how people view what Gonzo has done with his Destination 2010 plan. At least Gonzo is aware he hasn’t fulfilled his 2010 plan and his still wants to meet his goals.
 
Projects like this are happening at many schools all over the nation. You can often find facility upgrade
campaigns on most athletic websites. Sac State has a vision of an arena and upgrades to the stadium. The fieldhouse is done and top notch, the Well is done and spectacular, the field turf is in.... time to at least get a campaign off the ground. Get a fundraising person or group in place and begin raising the money and get it into the bank and growing. The community can't get behind something until it is in place. Talk of a new arena has been going on for 30 years. The university will benefit on so many levels with a new arena/events center. Start the fund raising. Need to start. Wtih nearly 200,000 alumni donating $20 each there's a 4 million dollar
start. And this is just one of many methods to raise money for the facility upgrades that are desireed.

Quit giving that gym more credit than it's worth. I wouldn't even put a JHS in there.
 
It might help the fundraising if we could produce a program that actually competes for the Big sky title or at least a playoff berth. I know many believe in the "build it and they will come" theory. I happen to believe in the "win and they will come". The money will follow.

Well you cant argue too much against the "build it and they will come" theory. Ever since the Broad went up and the football team got out of those portables and rat infested locker rooms, we have been getting better quality recruits and I feel it has shown both on the field and in the classroom.

I wouldn't disagree that some of the new improvements to facilities haven't helped recruiting somewhat. However my point is more that we are going to need to put a team on the field which is actually going to put us in the playoffs. I'm not sure if it's players or coaches, but we are not there yet. I know we can talk about quality losses and we were 10 points from x amount of more wins.


I don't think we need to look at so much how MSU is raising money but how do they consistently put out winning teams ( money comes with success). Look at Eastern. How in the hell can do they continually get into the playoffs with average facilities and the school is in the middle of nowhere?

I was thinking about the same thing watching the EWU /Nova game. What is it about EWU that attracts recruits to a remote school with very average football facilities. And Nova has average facilities with a stadium that seats just a bit more than EWU and they won it all last year. If you look at all the FCS schools in the country Sac State's football facilities actually are very nice. Sure there are a few schools withnicer stadiums in pretty mountain settings but not many. The average FCS football stadium seats 10,000 and truly do look very much like high school stadiums. There are only maybe 10 FCS schools with larger stadiums then Sac State in the country .

With continued good recruiting, good coaching and improvements in marketing next year to fill Hornet stadium with home games against EWU, Montana and Davis, next year looks bright. And hopefully the September and October games wil be at night.
 
Talk about knowing how to fund raise, Carroll, MT, a small Catholic liberal arts college set out to raise $30 million in four years for their sports programs. In just over three years, they've now raised $35 million! They compete in NAIA and just won their 6th national football title. They've got 1,400 students.

Why can't Sac St even fund raise half this much? We've got hundreds of thousands of alumni, but we get only minimal support, both financially and fan wise. It's discouraging and disappointing.

The Sacramento Mountain Lions use our stadium and sell out at least two games and the Hornets can't even draw half as many. A high school playoff game gets 20k. Sac St needs to figure something out to get the financial funding and fan support we need for an arena, at a minimum. Status quo isn't getting it done.
 
Marketing the football program to the students is key as well. The students are admitted free to the games.
Sac State is of course the largest school by enrollment in the Big Sky.
And the 29,000 student body at Sac State is actually the 2nd largest in the entire FCS.
Interesting enough, UC Davis is number 1 in the FCS in terms of studetn body enrollment with a bit over 30,000
students.
