It starts at the top. We keep hearing about how much the landscape of college football has changed the past few years, and that's true. But we seem to have a HC who is stuck in the past and has failed to adapt to that change. I appreciate that Best seems to stay true to the culture of EWU football and wants to do things the "right" way, but I just don't feel like he has done enough to make the necessary changes to remain competitive. The portal is just one example of that. Yeah, we want kids of character in the program but all I've really seen is a few graduate transfers from FCS schools and JUCO guys. Is that really the best we can do? I don't feel like he gets far enough ahead in the game. Recruiting is now a 365 day endeavor.Didn't see anyone in this thread predicting a winning season. That's understandable given the past 2-3 years of results. It's just sad that as fans we are now conditioned to low expectations. I've been watching EWU since the early 90's and I can't ever remember such low expectations. In fact, I don't remember more than one losing season in a row. A mediocre season here or there, but you always knew that the team would bounce back, and they did. That seems to be what's different now than in the past.
Again, these low expectations are certainly deserved, but I think I'll wait to pass judgement until I've seen the 2025 Eags play a game or two. It's reasonable to expect losses early in our schedule, but there's definitely a handful of games that are winnable. Grab a W or two in a game we're not supposed to be favored in, and who knows. Go Eags
Trying to convert to a run heavy, pro style offense when your defense is one of the worst in the country is just mind bogglingly stupid to me. A awful defense is bad for any football team but especially one who can't score quickly, which Eastern used to be able to do.It starts at the top. this post did not age well. Not sure how many wins the Eags will get this year. But one thing I am confident about. Eag fans, as well as the Big Sky is about to find out about Jared Taylor. I think he's in for a huge year statistically speaking. Might be top 3 in the league in total yardage. Much better passer than he gets credit for. Making this call before game one starts. Hope I'm right!!!
go eags!
It was a strange offensive game. It felt like Eastern did a pretty good job when Taylor was running on the perimeter. His game clearly lacks true passing talent. We saw that over the course of the game… he can’t pass from the pocket and drives where we tried never went anywhere. Taylor is kind of a one-trick pony..he’s a dynamic and strong runner but can’t throw the ball down the field at all. The two turnovers were disastrous and happened at terrible times, ending great drives.this post did not age well.
The game was tough to watch. Too many missed opportunities. We have to figure out a way to get more explosive on offense. Taylor needs to be more accurate, but I'm not giving up on him. Watching their live scrimmages this spring/summer, I've seen him make some difficult throws that caught me off guard - with good accuracy, timing, and rhythm. This made/makes me hopeful. It needs to transfer to to real games though. Downfield passing definitely needs to get better. And after what we just put on tape, it better get better in a hurry because Boise St. will probably try to stack the box and make us beat them with downfield throws on the outside. It was a strange offensive game. I’m not sure what to make of this game. I thought the all-new OL had some good moments. The D seemed to find footing in the second half and played well after a dismal first half. The game really was a tale of two halves.
I don’t think UIW is anywhere near a top 5 FCS team despite their ranking. I could be wrong, but I watched Idaho play the Cougs in the late game and Idaho looks head and shoulders more strong and athletic than UIW.
