How's Pulu doing?

I'm just curious... it sounds like guys who have watched him have said good things. He came to Eastern in shape and works like an animal in the gym. Why did he not pan out at UW?

I ask because I was just thinking back and I cannot remember a single FBS transfer from a BCS school that really made a big difference at Eastern. The two top transfers I can recall are Blankenship (Tulsa) and Bo Levi (SMU), but neither was a 4-star-type guy out of HS headed to a BCS school.

However, I can recall a few guys who came from BCS schools who either played sparingly or just flat had the wheels come off.

Back in the early 90s was a kid from Stanford- I think his last name was Bennett- and LB with awesome size and speed who never even saw the field.

Then came George Lane out of Missouri who couldn't stay in shape and never became more than a DT in rotation.

Terry Mixon from WSU was considered their prize recruit of the year at SS, but came to EWU overweight and brought so much criminal baggage with him that he wound up kicked off the team before the end of the year. He started a few games, but was never much of an impact player.

There was the RB from Oregon State who's name completely escapes me from the mid 2000s who wound up just being a rotation guy getting a few carries a game.

Then we had the OLB/DE from Ohio State (last name Johnson, I think) who enrolled in class but never even made it to Cheney and last I heard never even played a down of football again.

Now we've got two from UW hoping to reverse the trend. It sounds like Bronson will be a role player, but most people think Pulu is a game-changer player. What's the scoop?

in '05/'06 Ryan Cole did transfer from Oregon State and had a good season 927 yards and 14 td's 1st year abd 400+ his second year... Ryan Phillips transferred in "04 from JC and was a 1st team all conference for us a great athlete played a little of everything for a couple of years excelling as a d-back and is currently playing for BC Lions in Canada plus an EWU grad in '06

Regarding why Pulu transferred... it wasn't because he wasn't going to see the field, at least in terms of athletic ability. He was dismissed from the team for a fight at a party. Here's an article on it from the times, and doesn't paint Pulu in a positive light at all.

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/huskies/2011300440_uwfb10.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

When I inquired UW fans about Pulu a couple months back, the consensus was that he likely would've been a starter or seen a lot of playing time if he hadn't gotten in trouble. According to one poster, the picture painted about what happened at the party doesn't tell the whole story.

"Thug" attitude? No. More like a responsible older brother looking out for his little brother.

The guy kept offering little Pulu alcohol, and he started to give him sh*t for not drinking.

Pulu stepped in and told the kid to knock it off. The kid said a few very racist and absolutely wrong things. Things that I will not repeat on this board. Pulu hit him once, grabbed his brother, and left. What ever happened after that, Pulu was not involved.

I was there that night, saw the whole thing, and have known Pulu since 8th grade.

He got a raw deal.

From what I've heard there may be an issue with him being eligible to play this year, in regards to the NCAA and the incident at the party. Why, I don't know since transfers are only required to sit a year if they go to another FBS school, not if they drop down. The University however is having none of it, and is appealing to the NCAA so he can play this year.

As far as how he's looked on the field; dominant. He seems more of a run stuffer than a pass rusher; he gets his hand on the ball carrier and rides him down. That coupled with Renard's beastly pass rush, and that's a dangerous combo for any O-line to face.

Rumor is he's all that in the weightroom however is very raw off the ball ! Just a rumor ! GOEAGS!

Haven't seen him in person but have heard good things not only from this board but from people who watched him play in Spring Ball. Hadn't heard about the NCAA stuff.....hopefully it gets sorted out. I'm sure it will.

To All Inquiring about Andru Pulu,
Let me say this, I read the article. If it was my younger brother being bothered by some TUG, I would have knocked him on his butt also. I knew about this information from the time Pulu came here to EWU. I got the information from very reliable sources, and I didn't think it was my place to the it on this blog. :ohno:

I am not saying the victim is a Tug, just repeating what was said on the blog. I met this young man Pulu, spoke to him numerous times. You couldn't talk to a nicer person than Pulu. He enjoyes being here at EWU, and I enjoy talking to him whenever I had a chance.

What I have seen of him and Renard, they are going to raise hell on the RBs/QBs from other Universities, should Pulu play this year. I recommend to any of you, before you believe what you read, attempt to talk to the person, then make up your own minds.

Pulu is very approachable, as all of our Players. I haven't seen any of our players I would not invite to my residence at any given time. Take it from me, get to know the Athletes, before you believe what other person(s) say or writes about another, that goes for what I write/say.

I try to stay off the gossips, when I see our Athletes being talked about, I get involved, attempt to clear the air, should I know something about what is being discussed. Take care. Go Eagles!!!!! Vic

Just for clarification, I wasn't implying that Pulu is a bad apple or thug, simply stating what articles and others in the know have said. Personally, I'm partial to the side related by the UW fan who was there and saw what happened (according to him).

Vic, glad to hear your back is doing better, btw.

During spring scrimmages it appeared Renard was mentoring him and by his body language he was receptive, a good sign of team unity. I like it!!

Screaming-Eagle174,
I know you, I didn't think you was calling Pulu a "TUG". We have been at practices before together, and you were very receptive to him Pulu and the team. :thumb: We are 8-)

Btw, Yesterday about 3:40hrs p.m.,I saw the QBs,CBs,WRs,LB,Safeties, kickers, punters, run the hills in the Circle Drive North of Reese Court. Those men and getting to be outstanding in those runs. The improve each tie I saw them. The Bigs are running early in the am. According to Nate (Strength Conditioner) said The Bigs are ding great, so he invited the qb,etc to see them run the hills on Friday a.m.

An insite of what they does on Tuesdays, they lift weights, run the hills, then play 7 on 7 on Roos Field. I am glad the back is getting better. I forgot at times, and the pain comes back to remind me, I must take it easy, and don't push it. :thumb: I spread 3 yards of bark around my yard on Wednesday last week, I picked up another yard on Monday, will attempt to spread it on Wednesday with the help of to of my daughters.

Spreading the bark is not as bad as spreading dirt, etc, in the garden, the bark is a lot easier. Must go back to bed, get some more winks, 7 a.m. comes very early. Go Eagles!!!!! Vic

p.s. don't forget, June 1st Ewoos @ Showalter Auditorium @7 p.m., and High School FB All Star Game on July 1, at 7 p.m. Roos Field. We will have some recruits playing in that game. Hope to see many of you there. Vic

People from WSU were talking about how much trouble Mixon was when he transferred over, but I was hoping he just needed a change of scenery. Nope!

Anyway, he seems to be making quite the name for himself as of late. :ohno:

Long time "lurker" here but thought I'd post some since this forum seems fairly slow. I remember people were excited about Mixon until he showed up to camp twenty or thirty pounds overweight. For the most part, Eastern has done really well with the few transfers we have had over the years and it seems the two UW kids are gelling with the team very well. I'm not worried about either one having "baggage."

Anyone have any updates on his situation? I guess we will know a little more once fall camp starts, but I am wondering if he has been working out with the team over the summer. I am really hoping this dude will play, because I think a defensive line with Renard and Pulu would wreak havoc in the Big Sky. Not even really sure what the issue is, exactly....I assume it has something to do with the incident while at UW, but I thought he had sat out last season because of that and there were no further issues?

Regarding Pulu, he was a promising prospect but witnesses at the party said he stomped on the soccer players head (why he had fractured face), and that's why Pulu was kicked off the team and spent several months in prison for the assault.

He has talent and it's too bad he couldn't remain a dawg.

University of Washington football player Andru Pulu was sentenced Friday to six months in jail for breaking a man's nose during an off-campus fight in March.

Pulu, 18, punched and stomped a man who tried to break up a fight between the football player and another man early in the morning of March 7 during a house party just north of the UW campus. The victim was knocked unconscious and suffered a broken nose, requiring treatment at UW Medical Center, according to a police report.

Pulu, who was indefinitely suspended by UW coach Steve Sarkisian on March 9, pleaded guilty to felony second-degree assault late last month.

Thanks for the article.

The most telling quote from the article:
I brought shame upon myself and my family," Pulu said in court Friday afternoon. "I'm willing to take responsibility for everything I've done.

:thumb: Sounds like a man taking responsibility for his actions to me. :thumb:

The dude's already sat out a year and done his penance.....so wtf, NCAA? Don't you have more serious issues to tackle than a kid who made a mistake, paid for it, and wants to move on with life?

the University has made an appeal to the NCAA and should know something by the time fall practices resume. I do not believe he has used a redshirt year yet so worst case he could do that for 2011 and be eligible to play in 2012. however, i do not think it will come to that and we should see him in red come September 3rd.

Unfortunately, it looks like Pulu's not on the most recent roster (updated the 3rd)......don't know if that means he's no longer with the program, or if his appeal didn't go through, or what. Really sucks, though.

Saw this posted on Go Eags site:

Baldwin also announced that several players who were on EWU’s spring/summer roster will be unavailable this season. Included are returning letter winners Chandler Gayton (foot surgery) and Domonic Sheppard (ineligible). Also unavailable are transfers Andru Pulu (NCAA transfer rules) and Jarred Walker (back injury). Baldwin hopes all four players will be available for the 2012 season.

I don't get it... why would he be subject to "trasnfer rules?" He's a legit drop-down. He shouldn't have to sit a year. That's a big loss for Eastern.
