UNC is tied for first with EWU and PSU and they host both teams at Butler (10/15 and 10/17 respectively).

Would be a great week to get out and show some support.

1. Eastern Washington 5-1
Portland State 5-1
Northern Colorado 5-1

Volleyball team gets ready for big weekend against top Big Sky teams

The UNC volleyball team will begin a crucial two-game stretch where it will face off against the two teams tied with them atop the Big Sky standings.

The Bears (11-8, 5-1) will open the homestand with a match against Portland State (11-6, 5-1) at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion.

The University of Northern Colorado is coming off of its first conference loss to Montana last Saturday, but the Bears say they are happy about the chance to return home after being on the road for nearly a month.

“It’s nice to be home and be able to sleep in our own beds the night before games again,” head coach Lyndsey Benson said. “I think it will show in our play this week with the added rest we will get.”

UNC split two matches with Portland State last year, with each team winning on their home courts. The importance of defending home court again this year has been mentioned in the Bears’ locker room.

“Not only is the game big because we are tied with Portland State, but we need to take care of business here before we travel there later in the year,” senior defensive specialist Breanna VanDerMost said.

The offensive side of the net has been consistent for the Bears all year, and Benson said she believes that they should improve its defense. Her players agree.

“The last two weeks in practice, defense has been our mindset,” senior outside hitter Kenzie Shreeve said.

Though Thursday and Saturday night are crucial games in the Bears’ schedule, team members said they believe road performance will be crucial to win the conference title.

“The team that can win big road games to go with defending their home court, I think, will be the team that wins the Big Sky title,” VanDerMost said. “In this conference, anyone can beat anyone on any given day.”
