I think this is a good thing?

Maybe the break we need to get arena/stadium upgrades?

I agree. Ideally it would be more cost effective to have this done in-house, but since the marketing arm of athletics has been lacking any noticeable leadership (not to mention a lack of innovation by Wanless and Gonzo), this is the next best option. NSM has some comparable universities on its client list. I like this proactive approach to finding new revenue sources for the athletic department. :thumb:

It does bring up some questions:
  • 1. When do their services start and for how long?
    2. How does this impact the current operations of the Stinger Athletic Association?
    3. How does this (if at all) affect or impact the current operations of the booster clubs?
    4. How much is this costing us?
    5. Will current staff be replaced/canned to offset costs?
:?:

Looking at both websites, I believe this is all about bringing corporate partners/sponsors in. Groups like Nelligan don't touch the booster clubs: i.e. Stinger Athletic Association.

I think this is a positive, pro-active innovation by Dr. Wanless. He knows that he probably doesn't have the resources to do it in-house because of the way the labor compensation laws are for public employees. Definitely a win for the AD :thumb:

If we're banking on corporate sponsorships (FYI, I HATE the idea), we'd better do more research than the Kings did. Egad, what a horrible deal.

Why do you think big-time schools became big-time schools? It's because of corporate sponsorships. Come on now... :ohno:

I don't necessarily disagree with that assessment, SHA. I just find it rather on the dirty side. I'd like to name it after an athlete or coach who has been big in our history.

How about Debby Colberg Court at the Kim Hughes Athletics Center?

Not sure what this means......Or how it relates to the Kings.

Where do you get the money if you don't go after corporate sponsorship? That's just how it's done. I think this is a great idea, because what it means is that the school realizes that they have not been doing enough and don't have the capabilities to market the school they way it needs to be marketed. Sometimes the best thing you can do as a leader is let someone who knows more about a subject handle it for you. Sac State doesn't know how to market effectively and it's a shame because there is no competition in the area, so it should be easy.

When the Kings' deal with ARCO blew up in smoke, they brought in the Power Balance plastic bracelet company, which apparently has yet to cough up more than 2/3 of the amount they pledged for naming rights because they've gone bankrupt.

All I'm saying is that if the Hornets choose to go this route, they should do a little more homework on the bidders before choosing one. Giving naming rights to a broke company for essentially free does NOT meet the criteria for doing this.

I see. Well that is a Maloofs problem and not typical of naming rights situations. Plus, Sac State is getting stiffed by Alex Spanos, so it doesn't have to be a corporation that skips out on a deal. :(

Good point, 25. I remember objecting when he started getting involved with Sac, though I didn't in my wildest dreams believe he'd pull THAT. It just seemed to me that he had his fingers in too many pies (several buildings at UOP, several subdivisions in Stockton, a Stockton grade school nicknamed for the Chargers, a building at UCSD, and ruining the San Diego Chargers) to have time to do it right at Sac State.

Is there any chance we can back out of THAT naming agreement and either dispense with corporate naming altogether or at least replace him with a RESPONSIBLE person/corporation?
