Idaho back to the Big Sky?

Future possibilities all interesting...at least if Idaho joins BSC (present status) the conference should become two divisions (north/south) with the even # of football members. That was the original plans I thought when the expansion happened, of course assuming the Vandals play @ FCS level to start. (Before the grandiose restructure.) :twocents:

Weber better not get left with the have nots. First it will be two divisions, but I can see the BSC split into two different conferences. I don't want to be stuck with the leftovers.
 
Idaho can go suck turkeys, I would prefer they drop football than move back here, I still hate how the big sky became their Olympic sports crutch

That's my fear too. Idaho to me is a serious instigator of trouble. They could be behind a number of recent issues/changes in the conference. We probably could guarantee they are in talks with other members to try to create a new "FBS" conference, and I'm sure there are a few who are interested. I don't know why any would want to belong to such a conference, but...Idaho is determined to prove that they are relevant in the state of Idaho. I hope we can weather the storm and be with the best teams when a move happens.
 
They wouldn't be tossing it out there if it wasn't practically a done deal. It really made no sence for them to try and maintain independent FBS status in football. They are just too small of a market with no long running tradition at that level. They can't get anyone of note to visit their place and scheduling must have been a nightmare. Wyoming is in that same boat, but they have a connection to a better conference, for now. I'm sure the MWC would love to dump them. :coffee:

I found it interesting reading the comments. Only two or three participants were actually in favor of staying FBS. One guy kept saying that FCS was dying. That is really hard to believe. Is it relevant? Not really, but it is traditional college football, and FCS does put out an exciting brand of football. No, I don't think it is reaching its potential, but dying is definitely an exaggeration.

FCS, when playing G5 schools actually had one of its best seasons ever and I think it'll only get better next year. Most G5 schools are losing money hand over fist in their attempt to stay relevant in FBS and are turning to tax payers more and more (see USU) in their effort to keep up with the proverbial jones. Only thing keeping a lot of these schools on life support are the 40 bowl games (20 too many) and the body bag games against P5 Schools (lets be hones, even P5 schools get beat by FCS every year). It would take a miracle for a G5 team to break into the playoff. It just isn't going to happen. Maybe if Boise State were to run the table in the MW (or another MW team), or a team in the American League, but frankly, they'd have to run the table and beat two or three P5 teams int he OOC on the road to get a sniff.

If we were to really look at what is quickly become irrelevant it isn't FCS or the P5, but the G5. Can the Sun Belt, MAC, or CUSA really claim to have better teams than the Big Sky? Frankly, I think the Big Sky is just as tough as the MW. The most likely merge is going to happen between the top FCS conferences and the bottom FBS conferences. Oh damn...I'm starting to sound like Dougie Fullerton.

I was agreeing with your post until this... The BSC as currently constituted is vastly below the MW in every sport, men's basketball included it's not even close. But football even more so. UM, EWU might be a 3-5 win team playing a MW schedule.

Thanks for info...interesting. :agree: As the Sun Belt Commissioner alluded to they might just vote to drop the Vandals & New Mexico State & go with a 10 member group (with a new one joining from back there). C'mon, Idaho just doesn't fit (in anyway you look at it) as a Sun Belt team :lol: but hey, maybe they'll somehow find a way to convince them. (They are wondering nomads without brother Boise State holding their hands anymore.)

Be interesting if Idaho does join the Big Sky, if so, I'll bet that they'll do their best to eventually put a wedge in the BSC works & lure Montana, Montana State, Eastern Washington to form a new FBS level group. Along with possibly New Mexico State & another western school, maybe form a new conference. Don't count on them wanting Weber State, their opinion is that Idaho State, Weber State & the rest are beneath them!! Read the comments given by all concerned, they all talk of the regional rivalries with the Montana's & Washington's, and say that is where their attendance will build. It was stated that there would be zero gain in fan interest from having Weber State, Southern Utah or Sacramento State on the schedule or in the group. Idaho will be up to "vandalizing" the Big Sky eventually, the WSU, ISU, etc. Presidents & ADs better keep a watchful eye on developments & BEWARE !!] :nod:

Of course, BSC Commish Fullerton has mentioned a possible grandiose split in that there would be a eventual FBS level group & a FCS level, however that is to work out. Just don't buy it that they have Weber State's best interests in mind, at least from Idaho's standpoint. Myself,would hate to lose the conference football competition with UM, MSU, EWU, etc...
