Immediate Reaction: Weber State 50 UNC 47

• Maybe this is a game that shouldn’t warrant an “Immediate Reaction”, this is the type of game that probably needs a night or two of sleep to fully comprehend exactly what happened, but anyway, here goes nothing…

• Every Bears supporter I have spoken to is upset with the coaching staff after this defeat and the decisions they made down the stretch of the game. My only real gripe would be the end of regulation, when the Bears recovered a fumble and had the ball at around their own 40 yard line with 40 seconds to go, and they decided to run a draw and play for overtime. In that situation I would have liked to have seen a little more effort in moving the ball downfield. Northern Colorado came into the game as underdogs and had nothing to lose by throwing a couple of passes to perhaps set up a Mason Puckett field goal attempt. I would have like to have seen a screen pass or something of that nature to a proven playmaker like Patrick Walker.

• I can sit here and paint a pretty picture all I want, but the fact remains simple: Northern Colorado must learn to win ball games like this. In just my three years here as a student, I have witnessed many games that the Bears have lost in which they should have won, and I have yet to witness a game in which the Bears won a game they should have lost. That is what good programs do, they simply find a way to get it done.

• One thing we do know, this team is leaps and bounds better than they were at this time last year. And if this year’s Bears finish with less than 5 or 6 wins, something is definitely wrong.

• I feel for Mason Puckett. You talk to any kicker, and they will tell you getting a kick blocked will take a toll mentally on you for the rest of the ballgame, I think that was the case for Mason. My only hope now is that he develops a form of amnesia and comes back strong for the rest of the year. He WILL be called on again to make a field goal in a big spot again in the 2010 season.

• What does the University of Northern Colorado have to do to get lights at Nottingham Field? I love the occasional night games. I’m not naïve, I know it costs serious money to buy, let alone operate, but what kind of money are we talking here? I would be more than willing to have a bake sale, or sell lemonade, or have a car wash in order to raise money. Of course, I’m a college kid, so I don’t know how to cook anything or make lemonade. And I’m not good-looking enough to make people want to pay me for washing their cars, but my good intentions are there.

• On a more serious note, lets hope the offensive line gets healthy soon. A depleted line is poison for just about any program, anywhere.

• The Bears “could”—no scratch that-- “should” be able to go 2-1 after next week. This team must find a way to bounce back after such a disparaging defeat to beat a team that they are better on paper than. Senior leadership, anyone?

Some good points bearsthang.

I tend to agree with the weber fans in the other thread, I think we're being a little hard on our guys. I realize its the same ole story, can't capitalize, can't put the game away and all that. I'm not making excuses, I think UNC should've won that game, but we forget Weber is a talented and ranked team. Probably have one of the better QBs in the bigsky, if not the nation at this level.

We forget that there were some clutch plays to keep UNC in the game, Orms scrambling and hitting a receiver on a third and long. Gunn's punt return that set UNC for TD late in the game.

For once I actually had somewhat confidence in the offense, remember this is a totally new system, game two and they were able to put 47 points. This is probably the best our offense has looked in the last few years. Biggest thing I noticed was the O-line, provided excellent protection most of the time, there were a few times were Orms had to run for his life. I expected them to dominate Adams st, but didn't expect them to push around Weber, which I thought was a good sign.

Orms, this guy is getting better by the snap. Honestly I didn't have a good feeling about him, but the guy is smart and will do anything it takes to win. He didn't make too many mistakes, other than trying to do a little much at times and ball security. His biggest mistake I thought was not pitching the ball when they ran the option play near the endzone. He didn't try to force anything, if he didn't see anything he would take off, which I think can be a good thing. Has good pocket presence. Still needs to work on his touch. But the O is in good hand with Orms, the guy is a gamer.

What I was disappointed in, was the defense, at times they came up big and others they looked like crap. I refer to the long run Booker had, he should've been stopped but there was some poor tackling. Secondary was shaky at times, Askew played well, but on the other side #9 got beat a lot and didn't contain very well. As I said in another thread they gave the Weber receivers too much respect. I thought they could've blitzed more and force more bad throws.

Special teams are what need the most work, too many good returns on kickoff. Punter seem decent. Place kicker needs some work.

My reaction is the same today as it was immediately after the game, I want that 5 hours of my life back.

I disagree. I thought it was a really entertaining game, even though it didn't end the way I wanted it to end. Far better than watching a 15-10 football game.

a week plus later, and me, like our team saturday is still worn out from tha game. and so was weber st. saturday night.
but, here we sit in the best positions we have ever been in with downing, atop the big sky! we are making huge gains on the field. i hope it can continue.
this week is huge to not come out with any seriuos injurys, we just can't afford it. i wonder what will happen,
dre' is gimpy, o-line getting shakey with guys with experiance, and, i'm pretty sure d.o. is fighting that knee thing again......
this time next week we'll know alot about our future.....

Lets don't get carried away we beat Idaho State and home who are down right now, lets win on the road that is the key to being a real factor in the conference.
