• Maybe this is a game that shouldn’t warrant an “Immediate Reaction”, this is the type of game that probably needs a night or two of sleep to fully comprehend exactly what happened, but anyway, here goes nothing…
• Every Bears supporter I have spoken to is upset with the coaching staff after this defeat and the decisions they made down the stretch of the game. My only real gripe would be the end of regulation, when the Bears recovered a fumble and had the ball at around their own 40 yard line with 40 seconds to go, and they decided to run a draw and play for overtime. In that situation I would have liked to have seen a little more effort in moving the ball downfield. Northern Colorado came into the game as underdogs and had nothing to lose by throwing a couple of passes to perhaps set up a Mason Puckett field goal attempt. I would have like to have seen a screen pass or something of that nature to a proven playmaker like Patrick Walker.
• I can sit here and paint a pretty picture all I want, but the fact remains simple: Northern Colorado must learn to win ball games like this. In just my three years here as a student, I have witnessed many games that the Bears have lost in which they should have won, and I have yet to witness a game in which the Bears won a game they should have lost. That is what good programs do, they simply find a way to get it done.
• One thing we do know, this team is leaps and bounds better than they were at this time last year. And if this year’s Bears finish with less than 5 or 6 wins, something is definitely wrong.
• I feel for Mason Puckett. You talk to any kicker, and they will tell you getting a kick blocked will take a toll mentally on you for the rest of the ballgame, I think that was the case for Mason. My only hope now is that he develops a form of amnesia and comes back strong for the rest of the year. He WILL be called on again to make a field goal in a big spot again in the 2010 season.
• What does the University of Northern Colorado have to do to get lights at Nottingham Field? I love the occasional night games. I’m not naïve, I know it costs serious money to buy, let alone operate, but what kind of money are we talking here? I would be more than willing to have a bake sale, or sell lemonade, or have a car wash in order to raise money. Of course, I’m a college kid, so I don’t know how to cook anything or make lemonade. And I’m not good-looking enough to make people want to pay me for washing their cars, but my good intentions are there.
• On a more serious note, lets hope the offensive line gets healthy soon. A depleted line is poison for just about any program, anywhere.
• The Bears “could”—no scratch that-- “should” be able to go 2-1 after next week. This team must find a way to bounce back after such a disparaging defeat to beat a team that they are better on paper than. Senior leadership, anyone?
