Injuries taking Toll

With Jason Smith hampered by a possibly (stress) fractured ankle and his timetable for returning unknown, and MacCleod B-T most likely out for the season with a pretty bad knee injury, it looks like our season has fallen into the hands of Sperbeck's prize recruit from last season, the inexperienced but talented Duncan White....

What are your guy's thoughts? this was a tough one today. I still hold out hope for 6-6.

Based on what I heard today, I think we'll be fine, provided that the QB coach stays on White's @$$. Get him to recognize easy things like too many men on the field (both ways) and seeing blitz checks. Limit his access to other audibles early on. Open up the playbook later. Call plays that take advantage of his natural talents.

I kinda agree with the 6-6, though I think that we still have the capability of going as high as 8-4 if we get hot. Probably closer to .500, though. In any event, I think that given the experience White's going to get this year, things look good for a push to the chipper next year, which I had on the docket, anyway.

I came into this season really high on MBT, but was disappointed with some of his play. I felt he made some questionable choices and often times stayed in the pocket too long. On the otherhand, i was lukewarm on Jason Smith coming in, but was really impressed so far, especially in the Colo State game.

I was really hoping that we could redshirt Duncan and let him develop more and ride smith. Duncan is probably the best pure passer on the team, but Smith's mobility is a real asset.

If Smith somehow comes back next week, would we still be able to redshirt White? Would we even want to?

I thought White played fantastic and I liked the play calling. I guess with MBT we ran predominately and with Duncan it is shotgun, no-back, air away.

Hope MBT is back up soon. Who is behind White? I heard Anderson broke his leg this week so he is out. SH, your pick Carmazzi might get called up quick.

Gotta tighten up the DB's. Some of those catches (TD's) made our guys look woefully inadequate against a good thrower, ie. every team in the BSC and davis.

I like Nash and Clark will be a real gem as he gains experience.

We should have opened the game up by throwing, run, run, run got us too predictable. We ought to try the shovel pass with EW or Croxdale, they are perfect for that call. We showed our depth at WR, nice to see some mid field catch and scores.

Glanville & Co. come to town next, they were walloped by Wazzu 45+-9. I think we can beat them if we can get in their backfield and our DB's play up to another dangerous throwing team.

PSU 28

I thought that White looked good once he started to settle in but was sorry to see that he may have to give up his redshirt. There seems to be (at least before the injuries) a real logjam of young QBs and it would have been nice to hold him out this year. Unless I heard it wrong the guys on the broadcast crew said he may still be able to keep the redshirt if he only plays in this game. Does anyone know if this is true? Sorry to see all the injuries I hope for a speedy recovery to MBT, Smith, Hillard and all the rest.
I think that we can do well against Portland with what we have if we can keep pressure on thier QB, they don't have much of a running attack to be concerned about but it sure would be nice if we were at 100% for Northern Arizona. We do need to tighen up the DBs, they got burned bad against Southern Oregon and today they were playing way too far off Weber's recievers.
It was a winable game today and I think if we could have played them full strength we would have won.
I still think that we will have a winning record this year. Everybody keep your stingers up, we are going in the right direction!

Our defensive backfield, with all it's youth, is by far our weakest part of the team--it also does not bode well in that we'll see PSU, EWU, Montana, and Davis, all who can air it out. I personally am not a fan of Buck #40--gives up a lot of big plays. But like I said, they are extremely young and hopefully will get better as the season goes.

I heard Carmazzi is gray-shirting, not even going to Sac State full time--not sure if that means he's not even eligible to play this season.

I think we're going to have to ride the shoulders of White, unless Jason Smith is a quick healer. Based on what he did today with the team down 12 late in the fourth, I'm cool with it.

Carmazzi is gray shirting, so he's not eligible. We only have one healthy QB on the roster if Smith isn't ready next week. Who will be the emergency back up?

Since Anderson broke his leg and Carmazzi is Grey Shirting, the QB will be Loeliger in an emergency or #3 role. He was the starting QB for Diablo Valley College last year. He's listed as a DB, however he has a great deal of QB experience. I believe but am not sure, I think took QB reps in camp.

I'd come back just to spite Pielstick, but my D-I eligibility ran out without playing a down.

Rats!

Wouldn't you still have your eligibility, if you never played a down? I thought your "clock" starts ticking once you play for the first time and you have 5 years (including a RS year - exceptions for Med. RS)

1995 -- Freshman UOP (Redshirt)
1996 -- Freshman Delta (Not on team, AD Decision)
1997 -- Sophomore Sac (Not on team, OC Decision)
1998 -- Junior Sac (Not on team, OC Decision)
1999 -- Senior Sac (Not on team, OC Decision)

The best I would have would be some time at the D-II level, but the only D-II HC I would even consider playing for (John Fassel at New Mexico Highlands for a couple of years, my old teammate from UOP) is with the Raiders now.

I also have some on-line schooling the last couple of years, part of which was while I was in the Navy. I could check to see if my calculations are wrong. But even if they "find" extra eligibility for me, Sperbeck would probably find the same excuses 'Stick had (only expressed in a much nicer fashion): who wants a 5'7" QB (particularly one pushing 240, worse than my original time at Sac) with a 5.2 40, even as a walk-on? I never asked for a schollie, though I wouldn't have looked a gift horse in the mouth if offered one. The thing I had to worry about at Sac was the numbers crunch as I "downgraded." FBS allows over 100 players total, but FCS only allows 85. At UOP, realistically, I was likely somewhere around #106 (i.e. dead last) in terms of body proportion and ability.

I think will be OK if the rest of the progress is made we've all mentioned before. I liked what I saw last week.

MBT out 4-6 weeks....only sprained and not torn. Thank God!

That's great news. Too bad it's still going to eat up the bulk of the season though...

Get well soon MBT.
