Is the arena dead?

Actually, a renovated gym could be used as a backup to the arena as well...especially for overlapping events. I think it would be a plus for volleyball if Colberg Court was renovated to at least 2-3K seating...because volleyball in an 8K arena with 500-750 would look really bad.

To renovate the gym would cost $20M+, there are major structural changes and retro fitting that would need to be done. The arena will cost $45M, so unless Gonzo starts printing Franklins in the Reprographics office, I don't see us finding $65M for both.

Besides, I would rather use the $20M to build the football stadium.

Easy to spend money we don't have, isn't it?

If you were to renovate for basically volleyball, I don't think it quite cost that much. Look, I can do a major road rehab for 2 miles at a cost $10M. To renovate this building for 2-3K seating wouldn't be all that much, certainly less than $10M....

It's a VERY good idea to retain a gym like the current Hornets Nest even after building a new arena. This past VB season, the Manure Pile was renovating their arena and had to move games into an old gym. The venue sucked, but at least they had it. Were we to have to upgrade or fix things in the new arena, we would at least have a backup without having to rent out the Memorial Auditorium again.

In addition, as others have said, the gym could be used for VB and gymnastics. As good as our gymnastics team is, I don't see them filling up a new arena except for hosting the WAC Championships.

The gym could also be used for things like cheer clinics and PE classes.

You're comparing apples to oranges. Doing a major road rehab is much different than doing a major building rehab. Somebody mentioned asbestos, if that's found in the Hornet's Nest, very likely, that just raises your cost a ton. You need specialized crews and equipment to remove that crap.

Don't we already have a football stadium?

And port a potties, concession stands that have wheels and if an eartquake ever hit the whole erector set would topple over, yes we have football bleachers. Stadium would be stretching the word.

Memorial Auditorium? Mostly empty, Seats about 4,000 for basketball, about 2 miles from campus.
Not ideal but certainly a available option. I remember that Pacific played in the Stockton Civic Memorial Auditorium (Identical to the Memorial Auditorium) Until the Spanos Center was built.

No, I'm not saying Memorial should be an option for us. I thought I heard that Memorial was torn down. Of course it hasn't been torn down. But I don't want any Hornets playing in there anymore. We were so bad the 3-4 years we played at Memorial.

As we haven't beaten this dead horse for a while, lets. Here are some Ideas fo some smaller sized, yet still WAC-level, arenas. ANYTHING BUT THE NEST!!!

Nice find. Kezar Pavilion may not have the answer for the arena issue, but it sure sparks a great idea for any future Title IX concerns and women's sports.... Roller Derby!

I would desperately LOVE to get my Sacred City Sacrificers (varsity) and Disciples (JV), currently playing at the Roller King in Roseville, to an on-campus facility at Sac State. They're awesome, and prove that flat-track roller derby works!

Just gotta love the Mathemortician, the cutie-pi of the track! (She wears the # pi. LOL.)

Until this economy improves, nothing will be done about the arena. Asking students to pay again, would be very stupid and wouldn't pass.

We need to get more corporate money. Why can't we get (fill in any major company) to donate $5 million to start the construction of an arena?

same reason. not until the economy improves, and even then it is unlikely as any new King's arena will suck what little corporate money there is in the region.

Have the Maloofs agreed to front more of the capital costs? If not, then the the new King's arena will suck more taxpayer money from the region more than anything else.

Funny, I used to go to Kezar Pavilion to watch summer league basketball games. I thought they were going to tear that dump down.

I was talking about when the referendum was first passed. We could have gotten a sponsor when the referendum was first passed. But Gonzo did the bait and switch and screwed Hornet Hoops. He was so worried about getting the fieldhouse, he didn't both with the arena.
