The Journal has a story today about at least one ISU football player being held in jail in Utah on false charges of being involved in the recent robbery of a Malad bank.
The ISU athlete, who is black, had the misfortune of sliding off I-15 during a snow storm on Wednesday, on his way home to California for the holidays. The young man's car did not match the description of the vehicle wanted in the robbery, but because the athlete and his passenger were black, they were taken into custody. The sheriff's department issued a media release saying they had two men in custody in relation to the bank robbery, despite a good deal of evidence to the contrary.
The ISU player's mother flew up from California and the Oneida County Sheriff's Department went to Box Elder County to assess the situation. The two students were later released.
Needless to say the athlete's mom is incensed. If I were her, I'd be looking for a good civil rights lawyer right now.
