ISU @ Sac State game thread

Hornets are looking flat. 10 all after 1. ISU capitalized on a Dailey fumble. Multiple drops by the Sac State reveivers and the Hornet D is looking like they have for most of the year...terrible. So much for my blow out prediction. :x

The Hornet defense wakes up and returns two INT’s for TD’s. Also the offense had a drive for a TD in the 2nd quarter. 31-10 at half. The Hornets need to keep their foot on their throat and finish off the game strong.

Both teams exchange TD's in the 3rd quarter. Dailey had another fumble and the defense is still allowing ISU to do almost anything they want to. This game is alot closer than the score shows. 38-17 Hornets after 3. So far the only difference is the two INT's for TD's.

Not a forced fumble... We're having handoff issues... Smith/McCowan just botched an exchange too... We look bad...

A turnover is a turnover.

This is the only league game Yahoo! isn't showing a score for, and neither is our school site. The audio feed doesn't work.

What gives? Is it over yet?

AT&T Yahoo! now shows a 38-17 score, but there's no indication of a final yet, nor is there any quarter information. Based on game time, I suspect the game to be over, but there's no link to a game summary as there is for every other league game. Egad! I pay $35/mo for THIS?!?

AT&T Yahoo! FINALLY has a link to a box score up. About freaking time. Given the large disparity in score, what the cr@p was Smith doing in the whole freaking game? With a spread like that, MBT at the very least should have had some PT, and perhaps the third stringer as well. What are we going to do if Smith goes down vs. Montana?

38-17 Final. Aside from the 2nd quarter, the Hornets looked very unimpressive and sometimes down right terrible. The D was able to get 3 INT’s against a terrible QB who constantly missed his WR’s and over and under throw balls when he had guys open. If he had made a few plays, this outcome could have been different. Seeing as the Hornets didn’t want to accept any free gifts, they felt it was only fair to give ISU three fumbles. A lot of penalties didn’t help their cause either.

On to my notes for the game, my biggest complaint would have to be the play calling. With a 4 TD lead, Sperbeck felt it necessary to air the ball out and take no time off the clock forcing the D to spend almost all of the 2nd half on the field. Unfortunately the pass, pass, pass, punt sequence didn’t come back to haunt them. Also I love the naked bootleg that Sperbeck called with Smith late in the 4th quarter with the game in hand. Smith got crushed by two ISU defenders and went immediately to the bench. I can only pray that he didn’t get seriously hurt on such a stupid play call. :?

But that was topped by the amazing and sometime mind boggling play calling on the defensive side of the ball. After following a great defensive game last week, the DC decided to only rush 3 linemen and play very soft zone (DB’s 10-15 yards off the WR) coverage on long yardage situations. This play calling usually followed an ISU holding or penalty. This also allowed ISU to get all plus a few more yards back to make up for their mistake on the previous play. ISU had no trouble picking of decent chunks of yardage. Had the Hornets played a better team, it would have gotten ugly. (I missed last week's game, did they run a similar strategy?)

What we learned:

A good passing team will abuse the defense if they go with this type of a play calling again. The Hornets travel to Ogden to play Weber State next week, who just throttled EWU today. They will need to blitz hard and often. Not sure of the weather forecast, but something forcing the WSU offense the run the ball more will benefit the Hornets a little. (Now that I think about it, we already knew this.)

Reed is a great playmaker who can get open…if only he would catch the ball to make it mean something.

Dailey has fumble-itis…and looks to have a serious attitude problem with no end in sight. :|

The tackling has improved and so has the defensive line play.

The Hornets need to work on keeping the penalties to a minimum…especially the PI’s.

Due to the lackluster performance in the 2nd half, we now know this team has no killer instinct to finish off teams when given the chance. This needs to change.

And finally, the two Sac announcers who broadcast the games on BigSkyTV are complete morons. They consistently fail to mention the time remaining in the game (especially as the Hornets just seemed to let ISU hang around). Also how about some drive recaps so we know who did what. Also their little side stories about how they talked with so and so who played for Sac State 15 years ago and what was said at the men’s urinal needs to stop. If you guys read this, please stick to the current game and how about a little in-game analysis. Maybe talk about what the teams playing have had success with in the season and what they need to do to win.

With all that said, a win is a win, so I’ll shut-up now. The Hornets are 2-1 in the Big Sky and have a glimmer of hope. They are entering a tough stretch in the schedule where they will have to go to Ogden to play WSU, and then have Montana and NAU at home. Worst case scenario is 0-3 in that stretch. I am hoping they will be able to steal one of those games, two would be even better. :?

So Im sitting at the house watching sportscenter and watching the highlights from the games and Ohio State beat up Wisconsin pretty bad, but looking at the Stats the great terrel pryor goes 5-13 for 86 yards. This to me is a pretty bad game, but then again Ohio State one, so what does it matter? Pryor is considered one of the better QB'S in college football. So my question is this, why is everyone on Smiths case and pushing so much MBT, yea he had a horrible first two games, no doubt, but everyone blasted him against EWU for going 26-34 for 320, a lot of people said he played poorly against PSU yet he threw 3'TD'S, and today everyone said that MBT or Lolliger should have had playing time yet he threw 2 TD'S and had numerous dropped balls and they won, so whats the deal? He plays good and the team loses and he sucks, he plays poorly and the team wins and he sucks. What should we do, just give it to MBT and when he cant do the job give it to lolligier? We saw what happened last year when Smith didnt play against Weber and NAU and we lost, do you really think that he is doing that bad of a job.

As for Daily, from the stands he looks like he has a bad attitude but the coaches are still playing him, even though he didnt practice Thursday and friday this week due to a sore hamstring. He did have an outburst after the 2nd fumble today but i think that was more out of frustration of fumbling. I dont see Daily as having problems like everyone proclaims. A lot of us dont know the situation he was in up at Washington so who are we to judge him? He looks like a good fit her in Sac and im sure as hell happy to have him here, espceically since hes ran for over 100 yards in 3 of his first 5 games. Dont knock the kid if you dont know him or whats really going on.

On the other hand, if we play like we did in the second half next week its going to be a long game. We need to stop with the stupid mistakes of penalites and turning the ball over, thats not going to win us games. Lets go the Ogden next week and come back with a huge win for the program, were right in the thick of this Big Sky race. Go Hornets!

Two good opinions. my two cents.....

Defense played a solid game. A few mistakes, but the ISU kid threw 52 times. I am gaining confidence with the defensive effort lately.

CATCH those balls. I saw Reed dropsy too many gimmes. In defense to Smith's performance, WR's dropped the ball, pun intended. What are you going to do when it is 19 degrees and snowing in Bozeman? Or Greeley?

Naked bootleg late in 4th with a highly injury prone starting QB?! Broken play? Broken head? I think Smith stays in until Rx conditions warrant otherwise. Given the drops, he had a good game.

Note to RB's: When the line is clogged and there is no hole, bounce outside. Many occassions I saw 5'-7" McCowan charge into a 6-7 stall at the line and both ends were wide open for mucho green.

Why only 9,883 for HC? Was it the start time? Sunshine?

There is too much Slack State. Either the players or coaches, or both, enter into this complacent (slack) time period during a game where the playcalling or execution goes into the crapper. The second half was abysmal from an offensive view and the defense seemed to lose it's fire. Weber is not ISU, at altitude.

Ball control is a good thing. Way too many 3/out's. At a certain point get creative. Reverse, shuffle passes, sweep outside, get the blood moving. Again, watching McCowan storm into a body of mass for no gain or a long spot-on pass that is dropped will result in high turnover.

Grade: B

Stop saying it was a naked bootleg and a bad call. It was a great call. It was intended to be a Play action boot with both of the backside tightends going out. Unfortunantly one ran a drag away from the boot and the other tight end got held up. I think it was one of the circumstance where Sperbeck made a great play call but he ended up shooting himself in his foot when the tight end got jammed at the line.

As for Smith's condition, a mild concussion, saw stars for a little but hes fine. And Green Cookie Monster, there was no need for Smith to go in and hand off the balls for the remaining minute. Just let MBT get some playing time and let him shine like so many people expect him to do. ;)

As for Daily, he sure does have fumblites. But as i watched him from the stands, he constantly and religously only carries the ball in his right arm, even when streaking down the left side of the field. I dont know how hes made it all the way to the college level with that habit. Im not saying that the main concern with his fumbling but he needs to learn to cover up when going into a pile.

The McCowan-Smith exchange, was a botched exchange but McCowan got hit directly behind the line which isnt an excuse for fumbling the ball but those sometimes can be tough.

Overall Great game. D still needs to step up a little and stop those big 2nd-and long and 3rd-and long converstions. WR's need to catch more balls as well. Both Hendershot and Reed drop TD balls. Without our outstanding Offense and reliable Defense like last year, The fundamentals will win us ball games

Maybe the coaches should buy a pair of tacky skill position gloves for Dailey? The Moises Alou thing ain't working...

i think anything other then what hes doing now is a good idea :?

Hornet Dude, I can’t agree with the naked bootleg call (which it looked like to me, what else would you call it when the QB rolls out after a play action with no blockers in front?). Not when the game is in hand and your starting QB has had injury problems in the past. I would have agreed with that call in a close game and the result would have meant something. It would be a good play to run on the goal line. Plus it’s not a great call unless it actually works, which it didn’t.

it may have been a "naked bootleg" but the play call had no intentions in Smith keeping the ball and running. In any other situation he could have thrown it away or slid but he tried to keep the clock running and slid while still in bounds. The LB came in leading with his head, which should have been a 15 yarder and clocked him head on. Tough and smart play by the QB but ended up seeing some birdies.

overall, still cant disagree with the play call. If the get it hes a genius, if they dont, like it happened, its a shitty play call. I would still go with the play in that situation.

To me the bootleg looked like a busted play. I didnt have a problem with it as well. Smith will be fine...he was up walking around not too long after that.
