Who cares about Murrell's sexual preference but as BBJ stated, she shouldn't get a free ride because of it. The only time sex should play a part in a decision to fire is in circumstances like Arkansas football coach Bobby Petrino who had an affair with a football department employee.

People, people, people.

It's fair to question whether Sherri Murrell should continue as coach of PSU. Bringing up the LGBT issue IS ignorant...

...partly because it IS simply dumb to go there...

...mostly because the PSU Athletic Department operates under the "we must freaking save where we can" principle, especially since they're paying money to David Hersh to muddle about with 30-year-old concepts AND because football is on its self-sustain ultimatum. PSU isn't flush enough to eat a year of anyone's contract right now. Yes, one more year on Murrell's contract.

@pounder
I have articulated some logical reasons above why the LGBT issue is relevant with the Murrell situation. To call these ideas dumb and ignorant without providing any logical ideas to support your opinion makes you appear, well, dumb. Just because controversial theories make one uncomfortable is not a reason to dismiss them without applying some intellectual scrutiny.

Good college coaches are not unlike politicians. They build consensus and garner support from disparate political factions. They socialize with and schmooze influential allies and foes with charm, wit, and favors. Murrell is very good at this and has endeared herself to many influential backers and donors of women's basketball around the country. Her LGBT allies are one of several influential sources of support within the community. Murrell's combined political capital within the women's basketball community is substantial. Wether this clout will be enough to influence PSU's AD into giving her a contract extension next year, despite deteriorating performance, will bear watching.

Agree with Pounder. One person's articulate and carefully reasoned is another person's dumb. In this case, you look like a pretzel. You are stretching yourself in every direction to try justifying a dubious connection of issues where you have really no proof that any exists. And, now I see you are an expert on the the coach's influence with a certain community and their clout with the school and administration. Articulate, you are. "Right on", you are not!

BBJ didn't make Murrell's sexual preference an issue, Murrell did and nobody seemed to care or was surprised. The players certainly knew it and none of them left. To tell the truth, there are many lesbian girls' and women's coaches in high school, college and pro ball. I could name several women high school coaches in Oregon who are lesbians if I were a jerk. I am, however, an angelic cowboy who would never consider such a thing. It will be, however a factor that the AD will consider in deciding whether to extend Murrell's contract and everyone with half a brain realizes this. I mean we should do a twofer and fail to extend both Murrell's and Craig Robinson's contracts.

Wait, what?

I've been half reading this thread, but how did Craig Robinson make his way into this?

One thing I'll agree with in this thread is that women's basketball is one sport where PSU is well-positioned to be a conference power. There should be little slack on the coaching rope, so to speak.

Jones, Wade, and Egwauto were all Murrell's recruits. They committed while being juniors. The players recruited by the former coach played under Murrell as freshman. They did not play significant minutes until their sophomore years.
