It's not the gym's fault

University Enterprises which has other endowment monies has close to $51M.

It would be too easy to borrow against this money. But I guess it is illegal according to SHA.

Not from University Enterprises, but from the schools general fund endowment. Let me make that clear. If someone were to endow to the university and stipulate that it goes to building an arena, then you can do that. I should have made that clearer.

Nobody's saying the administration didn't lie, FG. We ALL are pi$$ed with the bait and switch. However, a fieldhouse is freaking REQUIRED to get quality football recruits. Football is THE $$ sport at Sac and should be supported in much better fashion than it currently is. We need a fieldhouse and replacement of our bogus stands where we came VERY close to losing millions in a liability case when a Davis attorney fell through rotten boards on the visitors side not too long ago. Of course we want an arena. Of course it was promised. Of course Gonzo pulled a bait and switch. Nobody's denying that. But to claim that we don't need a fieldhouse that will support AT THE VERY LEAST five sports programs is shortsighted to say the very least.

Ok dispite the bait and switch, let's look at football and basketball at Sac.

Football has a decent game day facility. It's not great but it's not bad either.

Now basketball has the worst, along with Portland St, game day facility.

While I understand a fieldhouse is a great recruiting tool and would help football,it's a support facility.

Basketball has a great support facility. It's current game day facility.

So the school needs to support basketball more than it's been doing.

The fees were suppose to build a rec center for students and an arena. They couldn't figure out they had to demo the old fieldhouse in order to build an arena? If that's true we have some stupid people in charge. They knew full well they wanted to use the money for fieldhouse. Who is this project named after? Spanos. What team does a he own? A FOOTBALL team.

Fire Gonzo,

Don't forget about Spanos Court and the fantastic facility at UOP. Wouldn't it be awesome if Spanos and his wife woke up one morning and were like, eh, made a little money this week, let's drop 50 mil in support of facility upgrades at CSUS.

what is the latest thoughts on Jenkins at Sac? I honestly don't think he is that bad of a coach. I would love to see what he could do with a new arena which could increase fan support and better recruiting.

So is he for sure gone or are we just assuming?

I think he is gone, but it would be sad because you are right Wildcat, I would love to see what he could do with an arena to recruit decent players, especially with the type of game he wants to run (run and gun, full-court defense, etc.). We just don't have the right athletes (especially this year) to do it with. The only one we have is our frosh point guard Vinnie McGhee.

I really think he would have better teams. U can tell he can coach when the come to Ogden over the last few years. They play hard and run a good offense they just don't have enough talent/size.

It really was amazing in 2003 when Sac finished in 5th place considering what Jenkins had to work with - facitilies/talent/recruiting...

Sac finishing 5th in basketball was equivalent to PSU hosting the conference tournament in 2005. I don't think many Sac'ers know that. The next coach will not have an easy task getting some W's in the 'Sky.

Spanos doesn't just have his name on the Spanos Center. There's also UOP's Faye Spanos Concert Hall (named after his wife), the stuff we already know of at Sac, and a locker room facility at (I believe) UCSD. Not to mention a zillion subdivisions/streets in Stockton. Heck, there was so much controversy over naming yet another street in Stockton after him that the proposal was withdrawn.

Needless to say, given that and the fact that he and his son have almost completely run the Chargers into the ground, I can't stand the guy.

Not sure how many games you've seen, but I think he's in way over his head. He teaches his players to get in the passing lanes - they're always outcoached when it comes to a half court game (offense or defense). I think he would be a solid assistant at mid major program, a place where he's expected to recruit and not focus on the X's and O's.

I say bye-bye Jerome, and hope Wanless has a clue on the traits the new coach needs to display!

I think it's very unlikely Spanos will donate more money into the project at Sac. After all the project is called the Spanos Sports Complex.

I can see Gonzo telling the students they need to pay more money in order for the arena to be built. For the sake of the students, I hope the rec center breaks ground this year like they said and everything goes as scheduled. It's the least Gonzo could do for the students, who paid for most of this project.

I agree, the funding and naming rights are all over the board, some examples....

$2M donation by Broad gets a $11M facility named after him
$10M donation by Spanos gets the whole projected $125M complex named after him
$30M tax paid by the students for an arena get nothing

No new major donation for this project in three years

Priceless and Pathetic

Maybe potential donors are going to wait and see what will happen with Coach Jenkins after this year. You know, as a fallback, we could always rent Arco Arena (just the use the lower bowl) for a few years to give some kick into the program.

Great post. And to top it off they still haven't broken ground on that rec center!!! I hope at the very least they will name the rec center, Sac St Student Rec Center. After all students have paid for it.

Hey look on the bright side. We're still in the same boat as Portland St and Northridge. Portland St and Northridge are getting a rec center for students. But they still both play in a crappy gym.
