Portland State Head Coach Nigel Burton has hired Jaime Hill as the Viking football team's new defensive coordinator.
Like Burton, Hill makes a return to the PSU football coach staff after working on the Park Blocks early in his career. Hill worked at Portland State from 1993-97 as both a secondary coach and then defensive coordinator. He was under then-Head Coach Tim Walsh as the Vikings played at NCAA Division II (1993-95), then transitioned to Division I and the Big Sky Conference (1996-97).
"Jaime is a guy with expertise and has a history of really turning around defenses, so I was really interested in talking to him and bringing him aboard," said Burton. "He has a great understanding of secondary play and really his knowledge base and experience is going to be extremely beneficial for us."
Since his time at Portland State, Hill has worked with the San Francisco 49ers (secondary, 1997-99), the San Francisco Demons (XFL, secondary, 2000-01), Humboldt State (defensive coordinator, 2002-03), Calgary Stampeders (secondary, 2003-04), Ottawa Renegades (secondary/co-defensive coordinator, 2004-06), and Brigham Young (secondary/defensive coordinator, 2006-10).
Burton has known Hill since Burton was an assistant coach with the Vikings back in 2001-02. "I was introduced to him when Coach Walsh was here and we have stayed in touch with each other," said Burton, noting that they would often have lunch and talk football when Hill was in the Portland area recruiting for BYU.
Hill will take on the job of turning around a Viking defense that struggled in 2012, allowing 401 yards of offense and 36 points per game.
In addition to being defensive coordinator, Hill will coach safeties for the Vikings. Burton will also reassume his past duties as the team's cornerbacks coach. Burton had taken over as defensive coordinator during the 2012 season after Eric Jackson was relieved of those duties.
Hill has 25 years in coaching at the collegiate and professional levels, and has recruited throughout the western United States and the southeast. Hill is a member of the American Football Coaches Association, Black Coaches and Administrators Association and participated in the NCAA Expert Coaches Academy. He has had guest fellowships with the San Francisco 49ers and the Green Bay Packers during his coaching career.
