Jan 20 - WSU @ Portland State

Although banned from postseason play, Portland State is still a reputable opponent. Can we go into the Stott Center and leave with a win? I hope the guys stay focused on the Vikings and not look ahead to their HUGE game against the Bears in Greeley on Saturday...

What are the keys to the PSU game?

For starters, we cant come out slow like we did vs ISU, PSU is a better team than ISU, and if we come out like we did vs the Bengals, the game will be over by halftime. And we cant commit too many stupid turnovers, we had way too many of those vs the Bengals.

We just need to play our game, and if we can do that we CAN come out of Portland with a W.

GO WILDCATS

PSU has four players averaging in double figures: Harriel, Odum, Tapscott, and Jones. Harriel is only a sophmore. He is the only, significant, current player on the Vikings team that will have the chance to play in the post-season.

PSU is a decent team. They have good athletes and a couple of really good shooters. There is also a lot of speed on this team. They can get up and down the floor quick. One real weakness is their experience. They are a fairly young team, with a lot of new faces. However, by this point, that really shouldn't be a huge problem. However, transition D hasn't been a high point for the Cats this year. However, The Cats have been fairly adroit when they get out and run the floor. This game might turn into a track meet.

Greiving is solely in charge of this team. Last year, he had to contend with the three headed dragon of Waters, Jones, and Thomas. Yes, they were talented, but they really didn't play well with others. There was a lot of show boatin, but very little chemistry. Now its his team. They aren't as talented as last season, but so far, they are playing better with one another, and most importantly, they still have a good deal of talent.

Odum, Jones, and Harriel each can go off for 20 on any given night, and Tapscott, one of the best 3's in the sky is a dangerous shooter. To beat the Vikings, Weber has to be tougher, limit TOs, and get good looks inside the paint. Weber needs to counter the Vikings speed with their own speed and passing abilities. Weber's best bet of opening up the outside, would be by forcing the ball inside. That scares me a bit, since Morris has terrible hands and Mahoney isn't 100%, but I think our Bigs are getting better and playing with more confidence. Also, the guards need to take the ball to the hole. Get the inside/outside game going and Weber should leave Portland with a W. If the Cats don't take care of the ball and play soft perimeter defense...this game could get out of hand fast and early. Weber can't wait till the second half, they must play 40mins.

Weber has to counter the Vikings speed by slowing down the Viking offense. Playing a soft half-court trap and mixing up the defense could be a great way to slow down the vikings. However the best bet would be to use the match up zone the Cats used against BYU and NAU. That should really limit the Vikings and slow down their offense. Speed is their biggest asset. Rahe will do everything in his power to make the game ugly. However, Weber should be able to score some points against PSU. Their defense isn't strong, better than last year, and has allowed teams with outside shooters, to get hot, and to score in bunches. Personally, on the offensive end, Weber needs to move around (the players cant be standing around waiting for things to come to them, they need to go to the ball), pass the ball with zeal, and get on the offense glass. The Cats can't play the first half, like they did against the Bengals (even though I don't think the Bengals are as bad as advertised, that team has the potential of being good).

Thanks for the novel... I read the first three lines and got bored. We will win in Portland... no problem... but it will be a fight in Greeley! Talhad... lets have a moment of silence for the Portland State University Inn. The Big Sky Conference championship will be played at that monster of arena at Northern Colorado.

Weber needs to quit actin like a bunch of pussies and drive the ball inside. Talhadfoursteals can play the three point game... so can bengalhater, catcat, n.ogden cat, cheesus, bobandwaldo, and patten jr. smjcpa and ajwildcat are too slow. and skeeter can't shoot worth a dam.

Should I call you Catcat or Bengalhater?? The novel comment is always something he (catcat) uses. Way to be original TURDHATER!! LOOOOOOL. You wank!!

UNC wont be able to host at the HanCOCK because its not big enough. Until UNC is successful against the Montana's, I don't think we should start ASSuming that they will be hosting.

Bigpapa - are we watching the game at the alumni center tomorrow for sure? If so we should start advertising right away.

I really liked Talhad's write up. It is a great analysis of the upcoming matchup on Thursday. Personally, I hope he writes another one for the UNC game. Lord forbid that we actually have rational, thoughout responses on this site. Good hell people!!

Are both games, this week, going to be available at the Alumni Center?

Is anyone interested in driving to UNC on Sat?

Um...UNC has already been successful against the Montanas:

Jan. 6 Montana * W, 63-45 Final
Jan. 8 Montana State * W, 72-58 Final

The Bears beat the Griz and Bobcats quite handily, as you can see.

that's the easy part, last time I checked you still
have to play in Missoula, and Bozeman.
It will be embarrassing to the sky if No. Co. Hosts the tourney with a handful of fans in the stands.

Five of our first seven Big Sky games are on the road. No one in the Big Sky has had as brutal of a schedule in conference play. Even our entire schedule is the worst too. We have only played 6 home games and it is almost February.

Don't assume UNC is hosting just yet. They may be 5-0 but they have 11 games to go and 6 of them are away. If UNC is to host do they not have the games elsewhere such as the Nuggets arena?

I believe there is a place in Longmont (sp) that is available, but that is over 30miles away. I think it is called the Coors Center or something along those lines.

But agreed with mikegraygoose...UNC hasn't played a tough road game yet. I'm not saying the Bears aren't talented, I think they are, I'm saying that they haven't gone on the road yet, which is the most important part about winning a Big Sky championship. Bozeman, Missoula, Flagstaff, Pocatello, and Ogden are all very difficult places to play, and from what I can tell, UNC hasn't been in any of those cities yet.

Does anyone know that UNC has never won a Big Sky post season game? That would make hosting for them quite intriguing. Can they host it at the current gym?

You're thinking about the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland, which is only about 15-20 minutes from the campus. It holds something like 5,500 for basketball. I don't know what you guys' infatuation with ISU is, from what I saw when they played in Greeley, that team is pathetic. I'd be stunned if the Bears lose in Pocatello.

No matter what kind of team ISU has, it is always difficult for a road team to win in Pocatatoe. You will not see the same ISU team you saw in Greeley when you're playing in Pacatatoe

But ISU will see the same UNC team they saw in Greeley. You see, unlike Weber, we didn't have to sneak by ISU at home, we blew them out. They never had a chance to win in Greeley and UNC didn't even play all that well. It's not like we've won 5 league games by a basket each, our average margin of victory in conference is 13.4 points.

First of all you need to take into account that ISU and Weber is a rivalry game, and it has been for a long time so each battle is going to be a dog fight, or in this case a Cat fight. Weber was alot better of a team than ISU last season but had to go into 3 overtimes to beat ISU in Pocatatoe, the year before Weber won in overtime by 9 and the year before we lost by 4.

Secondly, Weber is injured, we lost another player who probably wont play again till UNC visits the Dee, our leading scorer Hughey is playing on a hurt foot and our second leading scorer Bamforth is playing with an aggrivated shoulder injury, and BJ Porter is playing with a bad back. courtesy of all our hurtin, Weber alot of the times is playing with 4 underclassmen on the court at the same time.

Thirdly, NO Big Sky team plays as good on the road as they do at home, Blowing teams out at home is great but you gotta be able to win on the road and UNC doesnt have the most impressive road record.

fourthly, Quote from Mvemjsunpx on the bigskyfans forum.
A typical Big Sky Conference season is a crazy crapshoot with little rhyme or reason. Bottom-feeders upset contenders, good teams struggle to beat bad teams & follow with blowouts over other good teams, etc.

No one is saying UNC isnt a good team, but alot of us including myself are not completely sold on UNC lets see what they can do on the road first.
