KSL has learned that Weber State head coach Jay Hill had discussions with Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham about the vacant defensive coordinator position.

Although he did not receive an official offer, Hill has decided to withdraw his name from consideration for the coaching position with the Utes because he felt loyal to the Weber State administration for being so kind to him, as well as his loyalties to his assistant coaches.

Hill went on to tell KSL that he wanted to finish what he started in building up the Weber State football program.

Prior to being named the Wildcats head coach in Dec. 2013, Hill was an assistant for the Utes for 13 seasons, including three years as a graduate assistant and one as an administrative assistant from 2001-2004. He was a member of Whittingham's original 2005 staff.

How very unJohnLSmith of him

Coach Hill :thumb:

Coach Hill was just on 1280, and pretty much said it was a very difficult decision, choosing between 2 dream
Jobs, but ultimately decided he knew he wanted to stay at Weber. He loves working for Jerry Bovee, his assistants, and players.

According to DJ & PK prior to Hill's interview, Hill's contract would have been between 1.2- 1.3 over 2 years.

You watching this John L.?

That's a classy coach in Hill, imagine choosing commitment over money. Hill will hopefully be a successful head coach the rest of his career & get his due, money-wise. The revolving door on coordinator coaches under Whitingham seems almost comical. :coffee:

I applaud Coach Hill's decision. What a guy!!

I have a serious problem with a state school offering assistant coaches 1.2M. That is a major issue. The University of Utah should receive very limited state funding if assistant coaches can make that much. Hell, the U should receive no state funding. 1.2M would provide scholarships to a lot of state residents and help build educational opportunities for the state.

I want to thank Hawks for this link. It was fun to watch. I like the candidness of the AD.

So, when the AD was talking about Hill's commitment to Weber State he said that with in an hour after Hill said he was staying that the top recruit committed to the program. That is awesome to hear, even though at this time of year, every recruit is probably Weber's top recruit, but I wonder who that is. We really haven't heard much about recruits.

It's good to see you guys optimistic about this. But I'm not buying it. If Hill really thought he was going to get an offer he wouldn't have withdrawn his name. I think Whittingham pretty much told him that he wasn't really even being considered right now and that's why he withdrew his name. U fans wouldn't be too excited about hiring a guy who only won two games as a head coach. And if they were going to promote from within Morgan Scalley would be there first choice. I am glad Hill is committed to Weber. But this story is a bunch of crap from KSL. If Whittingham changed his mind Jay Hill would too. But with a two win season, I'm sure we will have him for at least one more year.

I prefer to be a glass half full type of guy and try to avoid being pessimistic and jaded when I hear good news. Take this for what you will though, according to several contacts I know inside the Utah athletic department, the Utah DC job WAS indeed Hill's IF he wanted it....Maybe we should all be grateful he didn't pull a John L. For once values such as integrity mean something in sports yet some refuse to believe.

It was reported by much more than ksl. All the hosts at 1280 were reporting it as factual, and they were reporting he was even offered $600-$650 K per year. Which was 100-150K more than Sitake made before he bolted. You might be a bit much jaded on this one weber cat.
