Good to see coach turn a program around. They were a 3 seed but lost in the 1st round of the playoffs to a team they beat twice in the regular season.

JC success obviously doesn't always translate to DI success. In Katz' defense, he had a successful JC coaching record over a much longer span. It's clearly going to take a special coach to win in The Nest, and I don't think Jerome was or Katz is the one.

From Intercepted email by Terry Wanless to Jerome Jenkins...

Jenkins had this program winning. Sure at best they were about 500 records but he recruited players who could flat out ball and he had capacity crowds in The Nest on top of taking the Hornets to the BSC Tournament. Katz has come nowhere close to reaching the bar set by Jenkins. I hope Katz can make some noise here but it hasn’t looked promising.

If you compare Jenkins to Katz it a no brainer. But neither one is going to get the program to the next level. Jerome was in his element as a recruiter. He could get recruits with athleticism excited about playing his brand of basketball. And as a fan they are exciting to watch. But Jerome's players didn't always have the basketball skills to get us to the next level of winning. They were quick, strong and jumped well. But as a group not the best shooters, passers, and rebounders. They competed well in his best years, but you could expect them to top out at a certain level of success.

A coach that can energize the community, boosters, the administration, and has a good network in the coaching fraternity--HS and JC. A high energy coach who can recruit, coach and do PR is what this program needs to get to the level of winning a conference title and playing in the tournament on a consistent basis.

Funny Wanless clip too by the way.

If we ever get a new facility, the first coach to coach in it will look like a genius. I can only imagine what Jenkins could have done with his recruiting prowess and new facility.

I've also been disappointed with Katz's ability to graduate players. Jenkins really made improvements in that aspect of the job and I hoped Katz would continue with that trend, but it seems to be getting worse.

For Jenkins, it's ironic that his career probably ended up hinging on the eligibility of Charles Garcia. He was unable to get his academics squared away and ended up going to a JC, then to Seattle, then to the D-league(should've stayed in school;but might not have been an option for him...)

What do you mean his inability? Of the 12 players that have had their eligibility expire under Katz, 10 have already graduated and I believe two graduate within the year (can't remember if its both fall and spring).

What about the 10-12 players that left the program never to be heard from again?

Turnover at a program that is in a mid-major at best conference with crappy facilities and no tradition of success at the Div. I level that has historically drawn at-best average talent? Come on this is college hoops, where every street baller thinks "he got skillz"

Good points. It would have been interesting to see where Jenkins could have taken the program with the Katz level of support from the AD. Oh well, does no one any good dreaming about it now.
