JMU visits WSU 9/18

Evening Weber Fans! What an awesome time My family and group of 10 had. Wanted to quickly say thank you for the hospitality we received as well as the individuals we met from Weber.

Not sure how good the game was - Felt Dominating and one sided for most without good continuity on either side. Best of luck the rest of the way and thank you again!

Weber was not 'terrible' as some have described it. The defensive line had some good moments, but some bad moments also. In my opinion the difference in these two teams is that JMU's QB was just good enough and Johnson was not nearly good enough. I told my friend before the game that if Johnson started it would be necessary to replace him with Keisser quickly. The coach did not do that nearly quickly enough. I am sorry but Johnson is not a QB that should be a QB at this level. Yes he has a strong arm, but he has a slow delivery, a slow mind to process and act on what he sees and he is slow footed. Yes he is big and strong and can get a few yards and can even complete some passes if he leaves the pocket and starts to improvise where receivers can open up much larger gaps than normal. If he stays in the pocket he is so indecisive and lacks so much confidence that he will not throw the ball because the receivers have only a small separation. He looks indecisive and scared frankly. I think that JMU would have won this game no matter who Weber's QB was. But if they had played Keisser starting in the second quarter it would have been close I think. The same if Barron had been able to start. There just wasn't that much difference in the talent of these two teams, but a large difference in the OC's. I agree, like Whiitingham, Hill doesn't seem to be able to hire a competent OC. Until he makes that move (and probably has to take over the defense again) Weber will not be competing for any national championship in FCS. However, I do not think Weber is a bad team. They are pretty good and they have as much chance as any other school in the Big Sky of winning the conference championship. I have watched, UC Davis, Montana State, and EWU play and Weber is as good or better than these three. Montana might be a slight notch ahead of the previous group and they are my favorite to win the Big Sky. But I do not think it is impossible for Weber to win it again or at least tie for it. But they have to play Weisser until Barron is able to return or else they won't even beat 'the good sisters of the poor'! Johnson should become a tight end or anything other than a QB.

:+1: spot on analysis, couldn't have said it better & I think it wouldn't have made any difference if you did remember to bring your lucky coin, Oldrunner

Upcoming game vs. UCD looks all the more interesting (or should say vulnerable) ?

This doesn't happen often Baller, but I am in agreement with you here. I think he could be effective as a receiver. He has good legs, once he gets going but is slow to get going. He has an okay arm when he has time to wind up. We should use him in a fashion that will maximize what he has to offer.

Weisser sees the field better, is more decisive, and has a bit more zip on his ball. Our best QB is still Barron, but Weisser is a good second.

As far as the OC goes, my feelings are that it is more of an execution issue than it is a play calling issue.

We are still having problems along the O line. It shows up whenever we go against a good D line. I feel that it is not size or strength that is at issue. It's foot speed and technique. We have an outstanding OL coach, so that is not the issue. We need more talent there. :coffee:

The offensive line was missing two starters... E. Atagi & Whitworth. I think if we had them playing the OL would be good enough. Injuries has hurt this segment of the team pretty hard and has made them far worse than they would be if no injuries. Yes, we do lack foot speed in the linemen who played against Dixie and JMU.

I agree, the Johnson as QB experiment is over. Jimmy Barnes anyone?

The bigger issue I see is the revolving door of assistant coaches. Hill is great at the helm. Players have talent. Hard to build a dominating system when you start over every year with new assistant coaches. Defense the past 5 years has been dominate. Hill was consistent as the DC. This year, there are many inconsistencies in offense and defense.
Don’t know how to solve the issue.

Some of you need to get a grip. I didn't see the game as the massive blow out some are seeing it as. We were outplayed by a better team. Did some good things, did some bad things. Without the two turnovers the game could have easily gone differently. With better QB play the game would have certainly gone differently. I also don't think the offensive play calling has been that bad. Moving onto to the conference season. I still believe this team has what it takes to win the conference.

Thanks Knit. Much more respect than what we're geting over on your fan board, where everyone seems to be experts on the geography and culture of the Wasatch Front, and the LDS Church. Most of these experts clearly weren't within 2,000 miles of the game. Pissing and moning that the FCS is so beneath them. Then move up!

That said, I know fans that post on a fan board aren't generally a true representation of a fan base (expect Montana fans). We tailgated with some JMU fans and they were honestly some of the nicest and most respectful people I have ever met.

Good luck this season. I hope for our sake you go undefeated, which I am confident you are capable of.

I think Weber State is still a good team, just not a top 25 team. As good as the Big Sky is, that could mean a 4th or 5th place finish.

Do I think they could play and beat EWU, Montana State, or UC Davis? Sure. Is Weber State’s inconsistent play capable of dropping all of those games or getting upset by ISU? Yes.

I don’t consider it a big success when you score in garbage time. JMU was clearly trying to run out the clock and lost interest when they were up 37-10. It’s great WSU got 14 points…but it was still for all purposes a blowout.

I don’t know if any team has won 5 consecutive titles, so it’s not disappointing in the grand scheme of things if Weber State doesn’t win it this year. I don’t see Montana dropping a conference game, so it will be hard for the Wildcats to do that.

I just see the same offensive problems that have been a problem since after the Cantwell team. I don’t see improvement from Spring. The Wildcats were fortunate to beat UC Davis then. It will be another close game.

I guess I’m not seeing the fascination behind Barron. Outside of his first start, it hasn’t been amazing stats. I think he made some bad decisions in the playoff game that hurt Weber State. As much as everyone bagged on Constantine, he didn’t make the bad decisions, and he had to play Schramm’s system…which was way worse than Hammer’s, which isn’t great. He is decent but certainly not a top tier Big Sky QB.

The defense has dropped a level off previous teams. Not as many play makers, and some bad tackling. I’m sure some of that is JMU…but if they want to play at that level, it’s got a lot of improvement ahead.

Johnson needs to stay on the sidelines. He’s a turnover machine. I wouldn’t think he’d have the hands to be a receiver.

Weisser needs to get the start this Saturday, and the running game needs to be the focus of the plays.

It’s weird to say it with an opening conference game, but it is a must-win and may be the difference between a playoff team or a 5-3 or 4-4 conference record.

Hopefully the Wildcats are fired up and get a W. I’ll be there cheering them on like I always do, just like I did during the good years or the 1-10 Graybeal year.
