Sac State football hires former Weber State coach Jody Sears as new defensive coordinator. Parker will stay on coaching staff. #BigSkyFB

As per the Hornetsports article:

Sears' offical start date at Sacramento State will be April 1, 2014.

Since he is not “officially” the DC until April 1st, I guess that is why they were trying to keep this under wraps. I sure hope he isn't sitting out the current recruiting season.

Sears' first opportunity in the Big Sky came at Eastern Washington where he coached the safeties, linebackers and defensive backs from 2000-02. He was elevated to defensive coordinator in 2003 and had seven of his players earn all-Big Sky honors.

While with the Eagles, the team made the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs three times and also produced three FCS All-Americans on defense, including Buck Buchanan Award winner Greg Peach. Eastern Washington also ranked among the conference's leaders in takeaways during Sears' time as defensive coordinator.

Let's hope he can bring some of that action here.

Looks like a solid hire. The April 1 start date probably doesn't allow him to recruit because he isn't an employee of the school yet. Maybe April 1st is contractual to stop him from interfering with this year's Weber's recruits? I wouldn't put too much stock in his performance as Weber's HC, he was pushed into a bad situation when John L. Smith bailed at the last minute. No telling how many players and coaches jumped ship in the confusion, you can't win without the horses. His defensive resume looks good, a experienced FBS coach like John L. wouldn't pick him for DC if he didn't have reason to have confidence in him.

Welcome Coach Sears, Go Hornets!

Well since WSU fired him, I would think he is free to do what he wants unless there is some contractual overlap that is technically keeping him on the WSU books until April. Otherwise Sperbeck can “hire” him as a “recruiting consultant” until the actual DC contract takes effect in April (assuming there is some money somewhere to do this). There are loopholes in everything.

I don't think that the NCAA would allow the "recruiting consultant" idea. I know they are very strict about potential recruits being contacted/ recruited by fans, boosters or anyone else not officially on the coaching staff.
I don't see Coach Sear's absence as that big of a problem. Since he has been named defensive recruits are obviously aware that they will be playing for a experienced DC.

No restrictions at all...in fact he was on the horn with our head coach they day he was hired and heading down to see one of our players last week, WR/DB who was offered by Wyoming before their coaching changes....

Hoping he choses the Hornets...

Cant wait until Spring ball....

Wednesday, February 5th is National Signing Day... I think we're going to find out a lot about the direction of the program next week....
