I'm very sad to let the board members know that Coach Volek's father, Joe, passed away this past Saturday. He leaves behind his wife of 61 years, Rita. It was my pleasure to know Joe, Rita and the Voleks. My deepest condolences go out to the entire family. When I hear about the funeral arrangements, I will post them.

VOLEK, Joseph Paul
7th Fleet U.S.S. Vincennes
May 31, 1923 - Dec. 20, 2008
Born in Rittman, Ohio, to the late John and Mary Volek. Served proudly in the U.S. Navy during WWII from 1941-47. Survived by wife of 62 years, Zerita Volek, and son John Volek (Vicki). Beloved grandfather of Joseph (Dina), Heather (Scott Brownholtz), and John Billy (Kerri), and great-grandchildren Courtney, Cole, Chris, Calvin, Morgan, Cade, Carter, and Benett. Much-loved brother of Ann Dumas, Mildred Solounka, Mary Berryessa, Martha Stanley, Frank Volek, Steve Volek, and June Ann George (deceased). Throughout his life his primary focus was his family. While working at the Auburn Post Office he enjoyed the work of ranch life. You could always find Joe in the stands or on the sideline watching his kids perform. Our Rosary will be at Chapel of the Hills at 3:00 pm on Sunday, December 28. Mass will be at St. Theresa's Church at 11:00 am on Monday, December 29 with a reception following at 2:00 pm in St. Theresa's Fireside Room, Auburn.

Blast.

I wish I'd known. I would have gone to support one of the best men I've ever met in the football coaching profession. And his dad's time in the Navy is a plus, too.

Fair winds and following seas, Mr. Volek. We'll miss you.
