It's about freaking time!

I'm REALLY glad Jonny O's back. However, I'd be MUCH happier if he were coaching the Hammerheads.... Oh, well. You can't win them all....

What a great hire...Jonny O and Lou will do a great job on the defensive side. I think Coach O would be a great Hammerhead coach too! Coach O has been exposed the the meatgrinder that is Big 12 football and his experience at that level will no doubt have a great impact for the Hornets...He was able to learn from the great John Blake and Kevin Cosgrove at Nebraska...If our offense can be marginal, we should be able to get to .500 this year...

The guy he learned the most from a technical standpoint was Buddy Wyatt during this past year. . Buddy is now the DL coach at Texas A&M (for the second time) and was the Alabama DL coach under Mike Shula. Blake is one of college footballs best recruiters and he and Jonny O became good friends. Blake calls the two of them "Salt & Peppa". Cosgrove is a good man, but he probably took more blame for Nebraska record last year than Callahan did.

I think the offense will be better than marginal. Man, they looked pretty good that last game of the season. With the transfer QB from UCLA and both running backs and some big size receivers coming in, we might be OK.

As for the Hammerheads, yeah I'm sure he could coach them up, but I thought Remington did an amazing job with those guys last year. He had nothing to work with and had them playing quite well as the year progressed. If he makes that much progress again, we might just have a real bunch of Hammerheads back, which we haven't had since at least 2002.

HHD: Agreed about Remington. I was really afraid at the beginning of the season that our freshmen qb's were going to get punted on their backs quite a bit. After seeing that we did allow a sack against Fresno, I knew they had the makings of something special, and they delivered all year long. Can't wait to see how they protect our qb's this year now that they have Div. I ball playing experience.

HHDad,
You are right about Blake. Technique is not his best asset…As you said, he is more of a inspiration/recruiting coach, who can land kids from all socioeconomic backgrounds i.e. inner city thugs to country club spoonies. I am sure Coach O learned a great deal from both guys. Coach Cosgrove got a bad rap. He built those Championship defenses at Wisconsin under Barry Alverez and should have been his successor when Barry stepped aside. Nebraska led the nation in sacks under his watch and had very good defenses under his tenure. Unfortunately, this past year was a bloodbath, no other way to put it. They were gashed by Ball State and everyone else, but I still hold Cosgrove and their staff in a very high regard. Those kids just gave up under Callahan...
