Jones to leave UH; will this affect PSU?

Question for those Hawaii folks...

What does JJ think about the 3-4 versus the 4-3? I noticed the DC that came in this past season moved them back to the 4-3. Numbers wise, they were a little better this season on the defensive side of the ball, but it was about the same. Curious if that would drive any sort of a decision for JG to go with JJ.

Pure speculation at this point. ;-)

Yahoo! Sports is reporting that as of this afternoon, Jones has made no decision.

At some point, BOTH schools are going to push him on this. While it would be cr@zy, there is precedent for a coach in this situation to actually be FIRED. I certainly hope that doesn't happen here.

He's the best thing that has ever happened to their football program. If he leaves, as has been reported, it's his choice.

The thread in "other sports" talks about a ploy by Jones and Leigh Steinberg... and that totally makes sense from my vantage point. Jones probably has to lobby just to get the BCS bowl payout reinvested in the program. Of course, I'm pretty sure he'd bolt if the wrong signal comes back from Manoa.

The offer made to Mouse must have come out of either the Hawaii situation or the SMU situation. Since he turned the offer down there should be no negative effect on PSU. It is possible that there could be a positive effect with some Hawaii players transfering to PSU..or am I just dreaming?

The article about the offer to Mouse specifically said it was a pro job, so I don't think Hawaii or SMU had anything to do with it.

Hawaii's after Norm Chow, there's no mention of JG or Mouse what so ever. If Chow isn't hired UH will go after Daune Akina, the DC at Texas.

Chow is currently with the Titans, he was the OC for that USC team that contained Bush and Lienart.

Opinion based on stuff I've heard: Chow is probably perfectly in his element as a pro OC. He doesn't recruit, he doesn't have the personality for it. He might end up at Hawaii, but does that do Hawaii any good?

Well, it is the WAC.

What? /users/31/07/37/smiles/911226.gif

Chow has coached at BYU, NC State, and USC. He has recruited and produced players like Phillip Rivers.

Bad example, PSUV. I'm not impressed with Rivers. As a QB, I see Leinart as having a better upside (if he can get out of Phoenix, anyway). Both are horrible people. I don't care for smack talkers at QB, and Leinart abused the system at the end of his tenure at $C. But I'll grant your point about Chow being a QB guru. I, too, believe that he fits in better in college; that statement from Pounder was confusing, to say the least.

I'm just relaying the word I hear out of Boise, plus some other observations. He CAN develop QBs. He's not "that good" a public speaker, however.

A college HEAD coach can't just be a coach... one reason why Dirk Koetter is also a pro OC right now (both Koetter and Chow made the playoffs, BTW- and Koetter is still working this week). Fundraising, being a public face in the community, energizing the student body are all a part of the bargain. Chow can coach football, but that's only part of the job description.

On the other hand, you could argue that Mike Bellotti has some similar deficiencies.

Which is why, record aside, John Volek was so good in Sac. He was ALWAYS out in the community drumming up support. I never heard of Mooshagian doing anything like that.

BTW, there's something else: at most universities, the HC is also expected to be a professor, usually teaching football coaching classes if nothing else. Those classes are unofficially a smoke screen for extra units for the players (mando installation of the system); officially, though, those classes are required to be open to the entire campus, and ususally a couple of outsiders sign up to support a coaching or other kinesiology-related minor. If a coach can't handle THAT, then he likely can't handle being HC.

Yep, now McMackin may stay at UH. Still I don't think this is enough to lure JG away.

Questions: 1) Did JG leave on good terms with Jones?; 2) What kind of dollars does JG pull down at PSU and what could he pull down at SMU?
