Julius Thomas

Portland State
PLAYER TEAM POSITION
Shaun Bodiford Oakland Raiders Wide Receiver
Adam Hayward Tampa Bay Buccaneers Linebacker
Reggie Jones Washington Redskins Cornerback
Jordan Senn Carolina Panthers Linebacker

I believe Julius Thomas will become the 5th Vikings to play currently in the NFL.

And when he becomes (at least semi-) famous, I'll be able to say he has flirted with me. At a football game (when he was a bball player) making fun of our football team nonetheless. My little claim to fame. ;)

NFL Draft 2011: Miami Dolphins Interested in Former Hoops Standout Julius Thomas

The Miami Dolphins had a representative at the Portland State pro day to check out former basketball standout and tight end Julius Thomas, according to Pro Football Talk's 2011 draft visits and workouts tracker.

Thomas reportedly had an impressive pro day Monday, choosing to only participate in position drills while standing on his workout numbers from the NFL Scouting Combine. He measured in at 6-foot-4 3/8 and 248 pounds and ran a 4.64-second 40-yard dash in February.

Looking to follow in the footsteps of Tony Gonzalez and Antonio Gates in transitioning from the hardwood to the gridiron, Thomas joined the Vikings' football squad in 2010 after four seasons lettering for the basketball team.

He left the court with school records in career games played (121), career wins (78), and field-goal percentage (.663), earning two All-Big Sky selections and helping the Vikings to two conference championships.

In his lone season on the football team, Thomas ranked third on the team in receptions (29), second in yards (453) and caught two touchdown passes on his way to a first-team All-Big Sky selection. He caught a touchdown and a two-point conversion in the East-West Shrine Game.

Thomas' quick adjustment to football after a hiatus since high school, combined with his impressive pre-draft workout numbers, have propelled his stock to the middle rounds of the draft.

CBSSports.com ranks Thomas as the ninth-best tight end in the draft and a projected fifth-round pick, while ESPN.com ranks him 10th at his position. Scott Wright's DraftCountdown.com has Thomas fifth, ahead of more established prospects like Virgil Green (Nevada), Lee Smith (Marshall), and Rob Housler (FAU).

The Dolphins, who previously dipped into the Portland State pipeline with undrafted offensive tackle Daren Heerspink in 2008, have a glaring need for a backup tight end behind Anthony Fasano. The raw but athletic Thomas fits the bill of someone the team could look at on the draft's second or third days.

8. Julius Thomas, Portland State, 6-5, 246. A receiver more than blocker, Thomas plays like a big wideout. He was a four-year basketball player in college who walked onto the football team as a senior and had only one year of high school football experience. He improved his stock with a dominating performance at the East-West game. His potential is intriguing, but he has a lot to learn — especially as a blocker.

Universal Draft Presents Julius Thomas of Portland State

Tight End Julius Thomas of Portland State hadn't played football for 7 years by the time he walked on at Portland State and had a sensational return to the gridiron that ended with an All Big Sky selection. His story will remind of Jimmy Graham, the basketball convert for the University of Miami Hurricanes drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the 3rd round of the 2010 NFL Draft. Though raw in the extreme coming out of college, Graham earned increased playing time over the final 8 games of the 2010 NFL season, catching 26 balls for 307 yards and 5 touchdowns. With the release of Jeremy Shockey, Graham is now expected to start in only his third year playing football. Though Jimmy Graham was a little more impressive a physical specimen at about 1.5 inches taller and 14 lbs heavier, running a little bit faster 40 time with a little bit more explosive jump metrics, on the football field Thomas is actually more advanced and more natural of a football player at this stage than Graham was when he came out. Having attended East-West Shrine practices in Orlando, I saw firsthand a player that did not look like a basketball convert, but rather looked like a football player, with the fluid, quick twitch athleticism to consistently shake man coverage, instincts that reach beyond his football years, and the natural ability to track the ball in the air and pluck it with his hands away from his body. Perhaps just as intriguing is the physicality, though inconsistent, that he is able to put on display in blocking. He shares that with Graham, who was also inconsistent with his physicality in blocking but showed tremendous upside during some plays.

From goviks.com:

Portland State tight end Julius Thomas was selected in the fourth round of the National Football League draft on Saturday, making him the highest-selected Viking since quarterback Neil Lomax was picked in the second round by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1980.

Was glad to see them go but now my Chargers get to deal with them...not fair.

Mike Person OT from MSU got drafted in the 7th round to 49ers so that is good.

Julius started in the second preseason game and caught the first pass in that game from Orton. He is rotating at tight end with Fells, who is a better blocker, although JT's blocking improved greatly from the first game to the second.

Looks like he caught 2 (of 2 attempts) for 12 yards. Not bad.
