June Jones

I got a bad feeling about this....for both schools. something fishy is going on. The dots don't connect...

I’ve spoken to two people in the past half hour who think June Jones might come back from Dallas without accepting a job offer from SMU.

Crazy optimism, or does Bobby Curran know something the rest of us don’t (he sometimes does)? “I have a suspicion it’s 50-50,” Curran said from the airport in San Jose, where he broadcast last night’s basketball game.

Another well-connected insider said “word on the street” is this “is a plot” by Leigh Steinberg and June Jones and Jones will remain UH coach.

We may soon find out that it’s not. A source in Dallas expects there may be resolution in about an hour, resolution most Hawaii football fans won’t want to believe — June Jones, SMU coach.

UPDATE: A source in Dallas was just told, “there could be something, maybe not,” since this person was told they would be updated later, another hour from now.

I think it is a plot by Jones to use the cache he finally earned on the island... just to invest the money coming Hawaii's way from the BCS payout (which, BTW, really comes to only 4 or 5 million after the revenue sharing, same as Boise State last year) in the program rather than the general fund of the university...

...however, the situation in Hawai'i is so bad that Jones probably would carry out the "threat" if the wrong signal comes back.

SMU is a really interesting job, because they are kind of a sleeping giant. People forget how big time they were before the probation and before the rise of the BCS leagues. If SMU ever got rolling for a few years, they could certainly stand a chance of joining a better conference or getting more national recognition.

Agree with you ManOfVision. Jones is no dummy, and SMU has a huge upside. I don't know why it hasn't happen already. When you have an active billionaire alum and almost new stadium in the state of Texas, I would say you have the foundation for a successful program.

In case anyone is in the Dallas area on March 1st:
