Team OTA's start Monday, so Closs stays in Jacksonville for the foreseeable future.

What exactly does that mean ? How do you sign a multi-year contract and not be compensated ? Sounds like an indentured servant. I mean, if you haven't made the team, what does the contract mean ? Is this like a pinky handshake or what ? So in the NFL, you can legally tie up the services of a player for some period of time without pay until you determine they are or are not acceptable ?

In the NFL there are no guaranteed contracts. Even the upfront signing money is prorated, so that if you quit before the life of the contract is over, you have to pay the remaining amount back.

Players in camp will get paid for their time. If Closs makes the team, he'll have a three-year contract waiting for him. Basically, he has agreed to terms on a contract; he hasn't earned it yet. That's what camp is for. He'll be in camp with the Jaguars, and if he makes it, he'll sign the contract. Typically NFL teams sign players to long-term deals prior to camp like this if they find a player they like, because if they end up making the team, they can be locked up on long-term deals.
