KATZ ANNOUNCES NEW ASSISTANT COACHING STAFF

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- First-year Sacramento State head men’s basketball coach Brian Katz announced his new assistant coaching staff today. Katz, who was named head coach on April 10, will bring aboard Terry Battenberg, Brady Bergeson and Dominique Bukasa as his assistants, and Travis Okamoto as his director of basketball operations.
“I’m really excited about my staff. We have a nice blend of experience and youthful exhuberance,” Katz said. “I’ve known Terry (Battenberg) for 30 years, we share a common bond in terms of the way we look at the game, and he is a guy that has helped direct my life in terms of coaching.
“I got to know Brady (Bergeson) when he was at Metro State while he was recruiting my players at Delta College. I’ve known Dominique (Bukasa) the last four years while he was an assistant at Fresno City College and the College of Siskiyous. Travis (Okamoto) was an assistant of mine at Delta the last two years, and I wanted to keep him on my staff at Sacramento State.”
Battenberg, who is the author of two books on post play and a graduate of Sacramento State, will work with the team’s post players, assist with recruiting and serve as the team’s liaison with alumni. Battenberg brings 32 years of coaching experience at the Div. I, NAIA, junior college and high school levels, and has directed four different Sacramento-area high schools to league championships during his career (Jesuit HS, El Dorado HS, Ponderosa HS and most recently Union Mine HS).
In addition, Battenberg was an assistant under Hall of Fame coach Ralph Miller at Oregon State in 1971-72, head coach at Montana Tech from 1972-76, and assistant coach at American River College from 1980-83 before taking over the head coaching duties at ARC in 1983-84.
Bergeson will work with the guards, assist with recruiting and oversee academics. He spent the past six seasons as an assistant at Metro State where the team combined to post a 157-38 overall record and a 93-21 conference mark, including five NCAA Div. II Tournament appearances, four Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament championships and a pair of North Central Regional titles.
The team won at least 19 games every season during his tenure, and he coached under (current Arizona associate head coach) Mike Dunlap (2002-06) and Brannon Hays (2006-08) at Metro State.
Bukasa will work with the Hornets’ post players and serve as the team’s recruiting coordinator. Bukasa, who brings seven years of coaching experience to the Hornets, spent the last two seasons as an assistant at Fresno City College. During that two-year run, Fresno City produced a 2007 California Community College State Tournament championship, back-to-back Central Valley Conference titles, and a 62-16 record.
Prior to Fresno City, he spent one season as an assistant at the College of Siskiyous (2005-06) where he helped coach the Eagles to a No. 1 ranking in the state for nine consecutive weeks. That marked the first time in school history College of Siskiyous had received a top ranking in the state.
A graduate of Sacramento State, Okamoto enters his third year on Katz’s staff, as he was an assistant under Katz at San Joaquin Delta College the past two seasons. At Delta, Okamoto was in charge of working with the guards and assisting with recruiting, scouting and academics. During his two seasons at Delta (2006-07 and 2007-08), the team combined to post a 49-17 overall record and a 20-6 mark in the Big 8 Conference. The Mustangs won at least 22 games and finished second in the conference both years during Okamoto’s tenure.
