Kelsey Kahle saw changes to PSU Women’s basketball team this year which the junior guard/forward from Aurora thinks promise to make next year even better.
“We were a young team this year and we still beat Northern Arizona on its home court and Montana here (things which stand out in her mind as highlights of her playing season). I can’t wait until next year. I’m really excited about our prospects,” she said following the season which saw her team finish with a strong 22 wins.
Those comments come on the heels of a year of change on the court for Kahle, a situation which pleased both her and first year head coach Sherri Murrell and which may have put into place the ingredients for an even more successful season next year.
“A team highlight for me this year was having everything come together. We had new players who fit in and everything fit together so well. My game matured in that I got more comfortable that my teammates could score points and we didn’t have to rely so much on me,” said the North Marion high school graduate who was described by her high school coach as “perhaps the best athlete ever to come from this high school.”
That was apparent to Coach Murrell as well. “Kelsey’s stats may have been a little lower but that’s because we had a lot of different offensive weapons this year. I think last year that if a team could stop Kelsey on offense, we lost. Not so, this year.”
Murrell praised Kahle’s maturity. “She stepped into a different system. Her leadership and intensity on defense made a big difference on our team. She improved this year. She’s always had the athleticism, but she added some new offensive moves this year. She had one weapon, now she has several.”
On track to graduate at the end of next year, Kelsey said an academic highlight for her this year was her cap stone project which requires students to do community outreach in their field. She wants to be a teacher. For her final exam, she taught a high school class for a day.
As for the summer, she’s planning a lot of work outs. “I’ll probably be a gym rat this summer so I can get ready for next season. I’m completely thrilled about next year.”
This is one in a series of articles that will run on GoViks.com throughout the summer. The athletes featured are those who earned endowed or named athletics scholarships at Portland State during the 2007-08 year. Kelsey Kahle is the recipient of the Robert Taylor Endowment for a student-athlete that has completed two years at PSU and maintains at least a 2.75 GPA.
