Keys to beat Montana

Montana is not a run and gun team. They are very effective in the half court game. They may be the most conventional team in our league. They seem to be solid at all positions and strongest in the low post area. Just the kind of things that have given us fits all year long. They are not as deep as they have been in the past.

To me, our keys to beating them lie in the post defense aspects. Having Hajek guard Bruenig and getting help from Hill and Bolomboy will prove important. We need to force him to pass out of the post and have our guards concentrate on staying right with their guards. We want them taking rushed shots as the clock is winding down.

Here is my priority list:

1) Limit their post play.
2) Maintain contact on the perimeter.
3) Limit our turn overs.
4) Attack the glass on offense.

I would consider zoning them off and on.

The best way to limit their post play is to get Bruenig into foul trouble early. Go at him hard and force him to leave his feet. Of course this is going to mean that we will actually have to pass the ball into the paint.

I say we go Nick Robinson on them, put our 6'3 power forward in there and give Bruenig a few hard fouls early. We will stop short of breaking his jaw though.

I like the idea of showing them some zone. Heaven forbid I mention it, but running some traps and presses might be effective. Why not go out and push the tempo?

In all seriousness, the team has had better ball movement lately. That needs to continue with Senglin back. I really think that a win is possible if we limit turnovers and have good games from Bolomboy and Gittens. We need Golden, Senglin and Richardson to knock down some outside shots. We cant afford an all out 3 point huckfest where we only make 30%.

This is all about can we stop Bruenig! If not, Montana wins by a lot!
Last time we played Montana, I think he missed 4 shots the whole game. He's a great big, but if Joel was to focus on defense, I think he's athletic enough to stop Bruenig. I think we actually match up well with them. Its just a question mark as to how Rahe approaches this game. If he uses Hajek and plays big...... we have a shot!

If he goes small and bombs away from the 3 point line...... its time to get ready for next year!

Breunig is definitely foul prone as is Gfeller.....when we beat them we got those two in foul trouble, then we took it to them.....without those two their offense is fairly easy to defend, all they have left is Gregory....if you play Hajek, then Breunig is going to be guarding him....I don't know if that is the match-up that will get him in foul trouble....if Breunig has to guard Bolomboy he will get in foul trouble....Gfeller is more likely to get in foul trouble against your guards....

My concern is that officials often get a form of March madness that causes them to not call fouls that were fouls a month earlier. Believe me, I am OK with that, as long as they are consistent with it. However, these are BSC officials so we can expect the regular inconsistencies. I believe that foul trouble will, as usual, be entirely random and have next to nothing to do with what actually happens on the floor. With that said, we just need to keep going to the glass and not back down from Montana's bigs.

Go all out and what ever happens, happens. :coffee:

1. Switch defenses between a 1-3-1 (frustrate the bigs, and only opens up the corners on occasion), 3-2 (pushes the Griz out like Eastern did to us), and of course man, doubling down on Bruenig. Make him pass instead of shot. Play some half-court trap, and occasionally play a full-court press. Make the Griz waste time. Their offense depends on time, much like ours to run. If they don't have as much time, they don't run as effective as an offense. Probably another reason why teams trap and press us so much. We need more time to run our stuff effectively.

2. Yes, we all know, Weber is a half-court offense, but against Montana, I would run and run hard. Attack the rim. Gfeller is a good shooter, but isn't the best defender. Go right at him and see what happens. Weber is far more talented and quicker than the Griz use that to our advantage. Run at them all night. Pass and attack.

3. Pray the refs from Saturday night have all been fired.

Well, game day. I can't seem to get myself too excited. I definitely want to see the Cats pull off the upset but given recent history. I don't think that'll be happening. Right now Weber is a 7 point under-dawg. Even if Weber were to win, the field is deep and tough. This might be the most competitive tournament in some time.

Keys to beating Montana………………..MAKE YOUR FREAKING FREETHROWS

In no way should they have called that foul on Bolomboy at the end of regulation, Gregory flopped so bad it was ridiculous, you have players bowling each other over for a loose ball all over the floor and they call that? Regardless, Gittens makes one free throw and Montana and the punk Gregory are done.

Leave it to Weber to lose it that way.

Another great choke job by Weber State, great effort, but we are kings of the choke.
Yep. It's past the point of being a disturbing trend. It's Randy's legacy at Weber at this point. Choking. Richaud went back to playing like his usual terrible self, including missing free throws that would have put the game away. Richardson continues to provide little value, contributing nothing but turnovers and fouls. Hajek's defense was atrocious, and Joel was trying too hard to be the hero down the stretch, attempting to draw fouls, rather than take good shots or pass the ball. Blame the refs all you want. Simply outcoached again.

Hawks...dude I'm as pissed as you but missing freebies at the end isn't being out coached. Yes, absolute choke job of the century but not out coached.

Pissing down our legs is what we do best! Worst team at finishing games.

Because we don't have a fundamentally sound team or very high IQ. The refs were indeed very bad but Weber does not play team ball and is not fundamentally sound. Plain and simple. The talent is underutilized because they are not developed fundamentally.

It shouldn't have come down to free throws, Tal. Offensive "sets" if Weber even has any are pathetic. There is little, sloppy ball movement that often results in a turnover if Weber has time to think. They had nearly twice as many TOs. The only "plays" I seem to be able to identify are when there is double or triple team potential in the paint, then force it through Joel. If not, 4 players on the perimeter jacking 3s. Sorry, but I've seen enough of it this season to make me puke.

Another huge problem with 1-4 jacking 3s is that when a shot goes up, 4 players are running up the court. Weber was out-rebounded AGAIN. They need players who are taught and forced to (fundamentally) box on a shot. Coaching IS sub-par, and not I'm not talking only in-game. It's very apparent.

He took a pretty brutal shoulder to the jaw. Once BigSkyTV has it on demand I want to look at that again, because it looked pretty obvious from where I was sitting that it was a foul. Not going to deny that Gregory is good at flopping though. Senglin is damn good at it too you have to admit :P

That said yeah the refs were way too whistle happy in certain stretches against both teams I thought, especially in the 2nd half. Hate it when games go like that because it really screws up the flow of the game. Would much prefer a physical game where there aren't a lot of fouls called to a game where there's about a foul a minute called with multiple players on each team being in foul trouble early on.

Anyway... great game, which is to be expected when it's the Griz and Weber in the tournament. 1 vs 8? Doesn't matter...it's Weber vs the Griz. Always seems to be a tough game! Going into this game I was thinking I'd much rather be playing Idaho, UNC, or PSU than Weber. Even in a down year you guys have loads of talent. I'm sure next year you'll bounce back and be right back in the mix for hosting.

Great game! I thought Weber's best game of the year! No doubt it should've been a win, but I'm excited with the effort! Understand the frustrations, but surprised that we are not celebrating a tremendous effort by the Wildcats!

Hate to see Hajek go out that way, but Bruenig can ball!

I watched it on Big Sky Tv on the very good and very clear Montana feed (kudos) but they showed the replay in slowmo and it was very much a flop, Bolomboy never made contact with his face. It was a complete reaction call by that ref. but oh well what can you do? It was a great game that had more of a Championship feel to it than a first round game. Good luck in the rest of the tourney
